Alyse is the woman in smokin’ shoes behind Spork Fashion. Alyse’s blog is a fun, energetic, offbeat, quirky view of fashion through the eyes of a self proclaimed shopaholic.
We have recently gotten to know a little more of Alyse and find her a refreshing voice in fashion. Read on and find out for yourself what she is all about, and stop by Spork Fashion to get a laugh or two for yourself…
SD: When did you start Spork Fashion, and what inspired it?
A: I started Spork Fashion in May 2006. Originally it began as a vanity project, a way for me to show off my fantastic shoes. I was getting such great feedback, and designers were approaching me to do articles about them. I realized that I could do so much more with my site. It snowballed from there.
SD: Do you have any fashion obsessions? If so do tell.
A: Shoes! What girl doesn’t? Right now I have about 60 pairs – and only 4 are black. I love wild, crazy shoes, as you can see on Spork Fashion. Marc Jacobs and Moschino are currently the best represented in my closet. I have other, more fleeting obsessions. Right now I am really into dresses. And I am a recovering James Perse addict – at last count I had 18 Perse tops.
SD: How would you describe your personal style? Who or what influences your style?
A: Hmmm… I feel like my style is an amalgamation of different looks. Feminine but not girly. Generally I like classic, body-conscious styles and modern clothing that looks vintage 1940s and some 1950s. I was a goth in high school, so you can sometimes catch glimpses of it in my current wardrobe. I also like pieces that are edgy or unique (like my silk skirt with a goldfish print). On rare occasions, I wish I had a 9-to-5 job just so I could wear a beautifully sculpted Chanel suit. I think that my own taste influences my style, but I really admire the style of Dita Von Teese, Scarlett Johanssen, and the character Amanda on “Ugly Betty.”
SD: Where did you go to school and what did you study?
A: I graduated from the USC Film School. My degree is in Cinema-Television with a critical studies emphasis and I minored in creative writing and literature. I didn’t study fashion, but I’ve always been a shopaholic. In high school, I used to skip lunch so I could take my lunch money to the mall at the end of the week.
SD: What is your earliest fashion memory?
A: Until I was about 6 years old, I would only wear dresses. After that, I would only wear pants – that lasted into high school. I am now trying to make up for lost time! Around age 11, I started dressing entirely monochromatically – mostly black, some white, and occasionally red.
SD: What does your average day entail?
A: I’m not average, so I don’t have an average day. Since I work freelance, so every day is different. A writer’s day is not particularly interesting. Writing, answering emails, doing research (aka shopping), playing video games when I need to slack off. When I am in production on a TV show, it’s 10-12 hours of wheeling, dealing, and putting out fires, or 12-16 hours of the same if I am on set.
SD: If you knew then (before you entered the industry) what you know now, what would you do differently?
A: I feel like I am kind of on the periphery of fashion, so I don’t know that I would do anything different. I love television, I love fashion, and I love writing, so I feel like I get a good mix in my current position.
SD: How would one go about getting featured in a fashion blog?
A: For Spork Fashion, we focus on emerging designers. There is so much talent out there! We are always looking for new designers to give a little press to. Generally we like to be able to do an email interview, and we like to have a sample or two for review. We like to be able to speak first-hand about the designers, and take photographs exclusive to the site. Essentially, Spork Fashion strives to go beyond a regular blog and be more like a magazine.
SD: What do you think the hardest aspect of fashion blogging is?
A: Finding good content to make you stand out in a sea of fantastic blogs. And of course, making sure to post every day!
SD: Do you have any events you are getting ready for in the near future? If so tell us a little about them?
A: I am hoping to put my television background to good use by producing some videos and interviews to put up on Spork Fashion. My husband (who is also in entertainment) and I are shopping for the cameras and light kits.
SD: If there was one designer on Smashing Darling that you could ask a question to who would it be and what would you ask them?
A: Want to be on Spork Fashion?

Chanel has always been one of the top designers around since I was a kid. I love their new stuff, as well as the old. I would love to get my hands on a vintage chanel purse!
