Feeling exhausted with a bad case of the post-holiday blah’s? The eighth in our student SMASH UP series is the perfect cure! Imagine yourself a mermaid and dive into 2008 with the Darling’s in this fresh-green SMASH UP tee, printed especially for you by Pippin Frisbie-Calder, senior printmaking student at Rhode Island School of Design. Go check it out now in the student SMASH UP store, or just keep reading! (Many thanks to our very own Whosiepie who took these great images, and to her friend Stephanie, the mermaid you see modeling this SMASH.)

Pippin Frisbie-Calder took her original, and beautiful, mermaid print above and turned it into this month’s SMASH UP. Lately she is inspired by, in her own words: “the delicate detail and lines of coral reefs…From this focus on reef ecosystems I have been exploringthe magical aspects of aquatic life, mermaids, enlarged fish and abstracted fantastical forms.” As I type, Pippin is kickin’ it in the Bahamas, which is really unfair as it is a cool 15 degrees outside my door. Anyway, soon she will return to life as usual in Providence where she keeps busy working on a variety of art projects and cooking/eating dinner at the cooperative house she lives at, not to mention her upcoming degree project. I really like her plans for post graduation, in a word, TRAVEL; she hopes to explore the Red Sea and camp her way through Egypt.

Yet another wonderfully cozy Alternative Apparel tee was used for this Metallic Mermaid tee. The grass green, sheer PJ Henley is 100% super soft pima cotton, with raw edges at the sleeve hem and a finished hem at the bottom; 6 shell buttons. The prints are metallic ink silk screens combined through the blending process of a rainbow roll. Pippin’s design was created to arch across the hips and chest of the female form to accentuate the cut of the shirt and the figure within. As always there are only 48 of these shirts at Smashing Darling only.

Head on over to Flickr for some more shots of Stephanie in the mermaid tee.
