Colombian born, Catalina De La Torre, began her career after moving to New England in the winter of 2002. Since then, her prodigious talents have won place in prestigious stores in Boston, Miami and overseas in Spain. Catalina’s career path portrays an artist, jewelry designer and entrepreneur whose vision, sense of style and attention to details will undoubtedly keep her in the vanguard of American jewelry design. Her singular expression is clearly influenced by her Latin roots and Boston’s progressive women’s style, an interesting mix of city chick, joyful and heritage. Catalina De La Torre believes in combining fashion with artistry and craftsmanship.

Trish: How did you get into jewelry design?
Catalina: When I moved to Boston, I’d love to go out and do ” people watching” Bostonian women are interesting, are a different mix , fashionable still conservative, in other words ” Urban chic”. Yet, a lot of the accessories were missing, things you see in NY or Europe. So, I started thinking about trendy yet classic accessories. This helped me a lot and I have always been into art.

Trish: When did you start your own line of jewelry?
Catalina: It was winter of 2004, I started designing small pieces with wire and semi-precious stones, then I ventured and went to a couple stores and they loved my pieces. They encouraged me, I left my job and started a full time business pursue.

Trish: Where did you study your craft?
Catalina: I went to Massart for jewelry classes, then I have been attending different institutions for metal smith classes and seminars, schools such as Metalwerx, Escola Masana Barcelona spain.

Trish: Where do you turn for inspiration for your designs?
Catalina: Bold and colorful. I like to mix metal and colors. I think the combinations are endless. Then I look into nature, urban women, fashion trends, I just let my imagination led me, keeping a fresh modern interpretation.

Trish: What fashion trends, if any, are influencing your jewelry?
Catalina: European fashion is a big influence, but then Boston Women and style help me shape my final jewels.

Trish: What does your average day entail?
Catalina: Well, I will say, in the mornings I returned phone call, order supplies/materials, then design, production, and filling orders, and by the end of each week I’m doing some paper work. When I’m getting close to one of the tradeshows, I just design and developed the new pieces for the next season.
Always during my day, I’m looking for new costumers, new prospects that will help my business grow.

Trish: Do you have a mantra that that gets you through the day?
Catalina: Is my company, I want to succeed, and I want to be recognized and to be part of every trendy women.

Trish: Do you ever get back to Colombia?
Catalina: Yes, I go once a year, sometimes more, One of my outsourcing companies is there.

Trish: How would you describe your personal style?
Catalina: I will say, ” Urban Chic”, I try to stick to well made basics that can take me anywhere, that includes jeans, boots with heels, and the accessories give you an easy way to incorporate trends with out becoming obsessed with them

Trish: And who or what influences that style?
Catalina: I will say the trend and the season ( winter, spring, summer or fall).

Trish: What is your fashion obsession of the moment?
Catalina: Handbags, I just love them, since I have the bussines I feel my traditional handbag is not enough and it hasn’t enough room for all my things, I’m always looking for a new trendy , colorful and comfortable handbag.

It’s early morning in late September, and I’m rushing off to get the boys to school and then onto business in Manhattan. After an hour of closet time the night before, I’ve figured out the perfect thing to wear. It’s all Indie fashions for me today. These pieces will intrigue even the über fashionistas of Seventh Avenue. They will, no doubt, be wondering “who are you wearing?”. These days it’s consider “JV” in the fashion world to only embrace the big designer labels. The real challenge is to discover the next “It” designer, and to wear pieces that people haven’t seen all over the streets. The Krelwear dress is enough to make me giddy. It’s light weight enough to last through the afternoon heat. Simply pop on an Anne De Pasquale hat to combat the September morning chill. Luckily, I’ve found a way to look chic and walk comfortably through the streets of Manhattan. I’ve chosen the perfect pair of Ricardo Tovar gladiators. Grab a Mi Mo hobo bag – big enough to carry all the day’s necessities. Top the outfit off with some beautiful jewelry. The Scorpienna’s Beadery earrings will bring out the pink in my cheeks in the most subtle way, while the Mushka Designs necklace will dance across my chest like the leaves of Fall on a breezy day. Lastly, I clasp on a Twist Style bracelet for added feminine detail. GASP! I’ve done it. I have found the middle ground between active mom, and fabulous entrepeneur. Thanks Smashing Darling! Jean Voute Pratt – Style Observer and Gift Girl

Center photo: KRELwear – V-neck waisted dress
Clockwise:
Anne de Pasquale – Kat’s Beret
Scorpienna’s Beadery – Rhodonite Flower Earrings
Mushka Design’s – Mod Petal Necklace – Brass
Twist Style – Freshwater Pearl and Semi Precious Bracelet with Antique Button
Ricardo Tovar – Black Patent Leather Gladiator
Mo Mo Handbags – Cari 903A Brown

How Do You Wear Your Indie Fashion?

by trish on August 13, 2008

Name: Jill Sherman
Occupation: Editor & Creator of TrenddelaCreme.com and Head of Marketing for technology start-up
City/State: San Francisco, California

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Morocco. I hear it’s one of the most culturally rich and ethnically diverse places on earth. Plus, I have a ridiculous obsession with patterns. (I can already see myself getting lost in the mosaic tile fountains. )

What’s your favorite piece of clothing? I’m definitely a shoe girl. Right now I’m loving a pair of patent red leather ballet flats I picked up for less than $20, if you can believe it. Oh, and I have a thing for hats (although I don’t wear them as often as I should.)

What 3 things can’t you live without? Sugar, comedy, and hairy chests (on men, not women.)

Have you taken any interesting road trips? I actually took at week long road trip with my cat several years back. We travelled the California coast line as far north as Big Sur and as far south as San Diego. (I know. Sounds crazy, right? But I was coming out of an awful divorce, so nothing seemed crazy at the time.)

What is your favorite word? Why? Plethora. It just sounds so velvety rolling off the tongue.

Tell us about something you LOVE that you want others to know about? AmysCandyKitchen.com. They have caramel apples so amazing, you might actually consider losing a limb or two to get one.

1. This is a great question and answer from Julie’s interview with Kate Sullivan from Kick PR.
Julie: What is is the one piece of advice you think most people need to know, but don’t about promoting themselves?
Kate Sullivan: Come prepared. Hard materials such as a look book ( catalog) and website are so important, especially in this day and age. I still rely heavily on sending out snail mail in addition to email and I do get a response from editors. more here…

2. Listen up everyone Needs PR! Don’t forget to evaluate your positioning, market and collateral from the interview with Crosby Noricks from PR Couture.

Julie: Who needs a PR person? and is it better for a clothing designer to hire a fashion pr person over a general pr firm?
Crosby Noricks: Everyone needs PR! However, PR works best when there is a great product, a great story, and great passion, enthusiasm, and patience. Beautiful hi-res images help too! Sometimes clients are itching for recognition, and that takes precedence over evaluating their positioning, market, and collateral. Also, a client might want to do a media campaign before getting really clear on their market, their voice, their story. PR can really help to clarify all these things – the challenge is to explain the value of PR beyond just media coverage.

I think it is key for your PR agency or publicist to be passionate about your product or service. For a clothing designer, a firm with a background in fashion is essential. more here…

3. Get featured in Fashion Junkie, this for the interview with Dara Fleischer.

Trish: Can you give the designers on Smashing Darling advice about how to get themselves featured?
Dara Fleischer: Drop me a line anytime! Send your fashion/beauty pitch to contact@fashionjunkie.com – I would love to hear from you! more here…

4. Be clear about what you are saying, this question and answer is from the interview with Erin Crumpacker spokes person with Jack + Bill PR agency.

Trish: If you could share with our community of indie/emerging designers one piece of advice what would you tell them?
Erin: Be sure to communicate the meaning and unique purpose behind your design. There are so many brands out there, so it’s important to explain why you as a designer care about your collection. There are many elements to consider when speaking to media and building your brand, but if your collection is well-designed and tells a meaningful, interesting story it can help really sell it to buyers, consumers and editors both online and off. more here…

Also, you will want to check back into the blog tomorrow. Trend de la Creme’s, Jill Sherman will be featured in ‘How Do You Wear Your Indie Fashion’.

On the same subject, we’d also love to hear from the folks that we’ve already critiqued, too. Have you tried any new things? Have the ideas helped? We’d love to hear how it’s going, and if we’ve helped to get things moving in the right direction.

And The Winners Are…

by trish on August 10, 2008

I told you I would keep you posted and here they are…

The winners from the casting call put on Jack + Bill PR, a pop-up agency within global public relations firm Porter Novelli, held a couple of weeks ago.

  • Jewelry: DANNIJO, a modern jewelry line created by sisters Danielle and Jodie Snyder, exudes classic sophistication with a touch of rock n’ roll. Using varied materials silver, gold, gunmetal, and brass—and colorful elements—drusy quartz, crystals, amethyst, turquoise, sharks teeth and pearls – their statement jewelry often creates a collage-like effect.
  • Women’s Apparel: AIRA, a modern women’s collection designed by sisters Karen and Annie Lin, inspired by air, nature and the constant change of season.
  • Model: Christopher Fawcett, a former Navy serviceman from Denver, with a recognizable fresh face and boyish charm.
  • Wild Card: Badgley/Sneed Designs, a new collection of one-of-a-kind, sophisticated jewelry created by Lynne Badgley and Jan Sneed, is made of genuine stones and cultured freshwater pearls combined with primarily 14K or 18K gold findings.
  • Fashion Stylist: Kalyn Johnson, a lawyer turned fashion stylist with a chic sensibility and unique flair for helping everyday professionals look their best.

“We were impressed and inspired by the caliber of talent who attended the casting call,” said Erin Crumpacker, spokesperson for Jack + Bill. “We met innovative, creative designers, stylists and models who are certainly ahead of the fashion curve. Although it was difficult to finalize our new client roster, we’re excited to introduce these standouts to the industry.”

The competition was stiff with 150 designers showing up for the casting call that took place over 2 days July 15th and 16th. We will keep following the progress of these five lucky winners. Model Christopher Fawcett took part in National Underwear Day. Talk about a way to launch a career. This lead to him being featured in New York Magazine’s coverage of the event.

Jack + Bill is based out of Porter Novelli’s Tribeca office, close to the boutiques and studios of up-and-coming New York brands and talent. Jack + Bill partners include Claire Buxton, Alyson Campbell, Erin Crumpacker, Erica Lichtenberger, Erin Osher, Richard Small, Lauren Szczerba and Emily Zanovich. The unique management team brings expertise in blogging/ microblogging, viral video, social network branding, event planning, runway show execution, showroom development and traditional public relations specialties.
