Aira Spring 09 Collection Highlight

by trish on September 17, 2008

I have had the great pleasure of meeting Annie and Karen Lin, designers for the clothing line AIRA at a party Jack + Bill PR threw for the winners of their casting call in NYC during this past New York Fashion Week. Keep your eye on these two young up and coming designers. Just to remind you they were the fashion designers chosen at the Jack + Bill PR casting call. After talking with Lauren and Claire from the PR agency, they said that these two young designers caught their eyes while waiting in the line of 150 + designers that showed up for the call.
This season the two decidedly went more feminine. The fabrics are softer and more fluid but the collection retains the same attention to detail the two are becoming known for. You will still see beautiful seams, pleats, tucks and other tailored details in the architecture of the clothing. They also made a conscious decision to focus on more dress silhouettes than they have in the past.
Karen and I created AIRA to represent both of our passions for art and fashion and creating a brand for woman that are sophisticated, comfortable in their own skin, loves the details in life, and enjoys art and fashion for themselves. AIRA, coined by the word ‘era,’ is an ever evolving ‘era’ by the air around. We recently just launched in Fall 2008 and we’ve started our blog and online boutique in mid year 2008. AIRA believes in bridging the gap between the customers and high-end designers, and presenting a real woman in the new ‘era’ as the real fashion statements. We believe that as glamourous as high end fashion is, we like to be accessible for our customers and more personal in communication and knowing what is happening around us as inspirations to our art and fashion designs. Right now, we are currently a fashion and art brand, hoping to branch out into a lifestyle brand including accessories and the small details in a woman’s lifestyle that is necessary and appreciated.
This Friday Sept 19th if you find yourself in NYC, the designers Karen and Annie Lin of AIRA will be showing a sneak preview of their Spring 09 Collection at Colico 275 Mott St. Bonus, there will be 10 % off Fall 2008 collection. More details here.

Today we have an interview with Jean Voute Pratt the brains and beauty behind two sites. Style Observer, a style blog where she helps women put it all together and Gift Girl, her personal shopping website. Shopping for all the girls and women in your life just got a whole lot easier. A couple clicks of the mouse and you’re done!  We here at Smashing Darling are happy to congratulate Jean, today is the launch of Gift Girl’s second version. On top of all this Jean has also been on Access Hollywood with style tips and was a co-sponsor for the site Inside The Tents. I loved reading her coverage of New York Fashion Week. Enjoy reading the interview and be sure to check out her websites.

Trish: How did you get into the business of personal shopping?
Jean: Personal Shopper is a misnomer. I only buy Gifts for Girls. I think of a personal shopper as someone who gets you whatever you want… not really my thing. I started out when I was a young Girl visiting my Dad on the trading desk. The guys would ask my opinion & liked the results of my suggestions. I did it for fun for a few years after college, and then decided to turn it into a real business.

Trish: When did you launch Gift Girl and can you tell us a bit about it?
Jean: I launched Gift Girl in October 2007. At that point it was geared toward helping men find gifts for the Girls in their life. The new 2.0 version will not only help men, but women as well.  The idea is for everyone to be able to find the perfect gift for every Girl.

Trish: Gift Girl 2.0 just launched, what new exciting features are there?
Jean: We have expanded into more than just fashion. We suggest Gourmet, electronics, flowers, sports equipment, etc. There will also be profiles for women that will help generate Gift suggestions.  Each Girl can have a wish list, and the ability to share the wish list with others. You can invite guest members. It’s really become a place to fulfill all your gifting needs – Girlfriend, Sister, Mother, wife, Hostess, Teacher, Friend, etc.

Trish: You split your time between Gift Girl and your blog Style Observer, how did that get started?
Jean: I started Style Observer after noticing that half of my Gift Girl members were women. I reached out to them to find out why. They liked the way I pulled the outfits together in the Collections section, and they liked the overall sense of style. So, I write Style Observer to help Girls pull it all together. It’s a site that helps make trends wearable, it takes runway to reality. I’m like a sister or a close friend telling you, in an absolute honest way, what works and what doesn’t.

Trish: In your opinion, where is fashion trending for spring ‘09?
Jean: I think we’re going to start seeing a lot more of affordable fashions.  I think places like Zara & H&M will have more of an impact. I also think it’s a great time for Indie fashion to make a big push. People are looking for something new and fresh.
I think we will embrace retro-glam – a woman being a woman in a modern way. We will also see Boho for a long time – it will evolve – but it will remain. It’s a wearable style, sexy style, and works differently on every Girl.

Trish: What is the one item in your wardrobe you can’t live without?
Jean: Denim!!! I have about 30 pairs. You can pair them with a dressy blouse, a tee, a fitted jacket, a tunic – endless possibilities.

Trish: How would you describe your personal style? And who or what influences that style?
Jean: I’m definitely a chameleon – depending on my mood. Sometimes my style is really influenced by a place. St. Barts is part of my soul & the fashions there open my eyes to a different way of wearing clothing. People’s style also influences me. I love Carrie Bradshaw for her creativity, I also love Sarah Jessica for her NYC edge, I love Katherine Heigle for her modern classic style. I also love when another person’s style intrigues me. Fellow blogger, Rumi, from Fashion Toast has great style. It’s so different from the way I dress, but I love to see how she puts things together.

Trish: What is your fashion obsession of the moment?
Jean: I’m obsessed with Chanel right now.  When I was younger, I never understood the whole Chanel cult thing. UNTIL… I tried on a Chanel dress. The fit, the feel, the fabric, everything gorgeous.

Trish: What does your average day entail?
Jean: Wow.  I wake up – feed the three dogs – then feed the two boys. Get the boys ready for the day. Then I work-out starting off with a 6 mile run. Shower & dress. Sit down at my computer for as much time as I have before I have to pick up the boys(usually 4 or 5 hrs). Get dinner ready & served. Work for another 2-3 hrs. Try to get the boys bathed and to bed by 9. Then back on the computer until about 11 or 12. Unwind watching some TV for an hour, and then fall asleep.

Trish: What is your style tip for the day?
Jean: When you are struggling getting a look right, put it aside for a few days – it will work itself out. Don’t wear an outfit before it’s ready, or it will bomb.

I decided to another interview today given that it is fashion week. Today’s interview is with Yuli Ziv the co-founder for My It Things. My It things and Gift Girl are responsible for putting together Inside The Tents, a collective of fashion bloggers bringing updates from their perspective what is coming for spring 2009. Inside The Tents also has a live twitter stream so users can get real time micro blog updates as they are happening. Yuli is also the organizer for the Meet Up group Fashion 2.0. She organizes this group to bring together and talk about technology and fashion. I am in awe of her and what she has accomplished. Please check out the sites and if you are so inclined, join the Fashion 2.0 group so you too can become part of the discussion.

Trish: How did you get into fashion?
Yuli: Having a background in graphic design and digital art, I was always attracted to fashion as just another form of art. Moving to New York City in 2003 opened my eyes to a whole new world of fabulous career women rocking the latest runway looks in the streets. Completely fascinated, I absorbed every detail – from the way they carry a designer bag to the fabulous array of coats for every temperature change outside, to the fact that dressing up for a night on a town isn’t limited to the dark hours only.  I had to share my fascination with the rest of the world, and an online fashion business seemed to be an ideal way to combine my secret passion with my online skills.

Trish: When did you get the idea for and launch, My It Things?
Yuli: MyItThings.com started in 2005 from my idea of simply having a fashion blog, but rather than being a “lonely blogger,” I was more excited about allowing other people to contribute and upload their own content. After a long brainstorming session with my techie friend (who is my biz partner today) the concept evolved into an online fashion magazine, created entirely by people online. The first version was launched in March 2007, and today hundreds of respected fashion, beauty and entertainment bloggers contribute content and interact on the site on a daily basis. Recently we’ve expanded our audience to include aspiring fashion designers, who can showcase their work, contribute articles about fashion and interact with their future consumers in a social environment.

Trish: What is the biggest challenge about launching a website?
Yuli: For me it was deciding when the website was ready to be seen and used by the public. In the end, I think it’s important to start by having at least a minimal online presence and keep improving the user experience every day. The features and innovations you can have online are endless, but it still takes quite some time for people to become aware of your brand. Start creating the buzz as early as you can, even with a limited website.

Trish: You also are the organizer for Fashion 2.0, Meet Up group, what are your hopes and goals for the group?
Yuli: When the Fashion 2.0 group started, the goal was to find like-minded people who have three things in common: internet, fashion and NYC. Now, as the group continues to grow, I realize the real goal is bigger than just a social get-together – we are finally initiating the much-needed conversation between the new online world and the traditional fashion world. I feel the fashion industry today is facing similar challenges the music industry faced few years ago. The new generation of designers, consumers and trendsetters is about to transform this highly hierarchal world and I’m thrilled to be part of a group which leads this change.

Trish: How do you see the internet changing the face of fashion now and in the near future?
Yuli: There are three major changes I see happening in the fashion world:

More fashion designers realize that everything they need to launch their own fashion collection is available online. Things like creating your website, attaching an e-commerce platform to it, running your own ad campaigns, creating a consumer fan base and even socially interacting with them – can be done online at almost no cost and while requiring very few and basic skills.

Consumers are getting more educated about fashion and trends. Blogs and independent fashion publications are flourishing online, providing personal insight into everything from budget shopping to reporting on international fashion influences seen in the streets of London, Tokyo or Paris.

Also, the accessibility of online shopping presents more inventory and choices to an expanding consumer base. Even designer garments, never before available outside big cities, can be reached in a click of a mouse shortly after runway shows, thanks to online retailers such as Net-A-Porter.

Trish: What does your average day entail?
Yuli: After waking up, I do a morning recap on the night’s content submissions on MyItThings.com, check Twitter, Email and Google Analytics, write a couple of blog posts, walk with my Border Collie in Washington Square Park and take a daily picture of my outfit.  The day at the office starts at noon (privileges of being your own boss) by catching up with my business partner on everything that’s going on. After that it could be pretty much anything from designing the next site feature, talking to potential investors or strategic partners, coming up with new promotions and contests, planning our runway show event, creating presentations for potential sponsors, brainstorming on PR strategies to shooting my own webisodes of  “Fashion for Thought”.  In the evening I sometimes head out to one of the fabulous fashion events or openings, and later continue working from home with TV in the background; Force myself to sleep at 2am; Love every moment of it!

Trish: What is the one item in your wardrobe you can’t live without?
Yuli: Summer dresses!  I search for the perfect one every summer, in the process ending up with more than I could possibly wear, considering the short NYC summer.

Trish: How would you describe your personal style? And who or what influences that style?
Yuli: A lot of my shopping is completely emotional; when I see something I love it usually involves a slight sensation in my stomach. That’s how I know this item fits my personal style. I’m usually attracted to clean, modern shapes, subtle color hues, sophisticated details and embellishments. Fashion week is a huge source of inspiration every season. That’s when I usually decide on my own key pieces or looks that I can see myself wearing.

Trish: What is your fashion obsession of the moment?
Yuli: New York Fashion Week planning! Can’t wait to share with everyone online our behind the scenes coverage from the Bryant Park tents!

Darling Profile: Sarah Editor of Style It

by trish on September 9, 2008

Her tagline reads: Where the fashion nerd meets the pop culture obsessed. Who is she, she is Sarah Conley of the blog Style IT. A blog that features Sarah’s opinion, style, passion and enthusiasm. If she doesn’t like it she won’t write about it. She also has the distinct title of Community Relations Associate for the Coutorture Network. This week Sarah can be found writing about fashion week, On The Plus Side: A Fuller Figured Fashion Week.

Trish: How did you get your start in fashion, and what was your first job?
Sarah: Actually, my position with Coutorture is my first professional fashion job, but in college I worked retail for Lane Bryant, Bath and Body Works and Lancome.

Trish: When did you start your blog Style IT?
Sarah: I started Style IT in October 2006 while I was still living in Arkansas as a way to maintain my creativity and love for fashion.

Trish: When did you also become the Community Manager for Coutorture?
Sarah:
I started with Coutorture in February 2007. I was initially hired to maintain the website during Fashion Week, and we worked so well together I was hired full time. The rest is history.

Trish: Tell us about what you are doing for Fashion Week?
Sarah:
For Fashion Week, I’m putting together a web based mini documentary series about being a plus size woman at New York Fashion Week called On The Plus Side: A Fuller Figured Fashion Week Experience. Each day I’ll produce videos about what it’s like to be in the tents as a plus size woman and my outfits each day.

Trish: What is the one item in your wardrobe you can’t live without?
Sarah:
That’s a really great question! It’s hard to say, but right now I’m working on getting a great fitting pair of boots for winter.

Trish: How would you describe your personal style? And who or what influences that style?
Sarah:
Being a larger woman, a lot of the more fashion forward items aren’t produced in my size, so I’ve become quite adept at accessorizing. Also, living in NYC is a huge influence, not only from what others are wearing, but your outfit also has to rely heavily on utility.

Trish: What is your fashion obsession of the moment?
Sarah:
After a recent trip to H&M I cannot stop obsessing over knit tams. I have 8 of them now!

Trish: What does your average day entail?
Sarah:
My average day is crazy! My work for Coutorture allows me to wear many different hats. Since there are only three of us on the team, we each have to be incredibly great multitaskers. Some days I educate the community on how to be better bloggers, other days I’m doing makeup for one of our original photoshoots and another I’ll be attending press events. You never know what the day is going to hold.

Trish: If you knew then (before you entered the industry) what you know now, what would you do differently?
Sarah:
Honestly, I wouldn’t have spent so much time in traditional education. When it comes to new media, it’s all about what you know and what you can learn. The internet evolves so rapidly that it’s hard to keep up, so the rate at which you evolve really says a lot about your skills. It’s amazing how the “random skills” you’ve acquired over the course of your life can finally be successful in this realm.

Trish: Can you give indie designers on Smashing Darling advice about how to pitch their product to bloggers to get themselves or their product featured?
Sarah: The best piece of advice I can offer is to be authentic. We receive a lot of insincere pitches from brands looking for publicity. It’s difficult to receive some blanket pitch from an established brand – writing about them feels forced, you give them all this publicity and you receive nothing. The reward in writing about independent designers is that you get to help them grown, and that is truly a joy. There’s no benefit for the blogger in making money for larger brands.

This article from the NY Times was brought to my attention and I thought is was well worth blogging about today. The Title Wanted: Genius Designer. How very appropriate given the fact that the tents in New York for fashion week are buzzing already. The article touches on some very important changes in the fashion industry. There are lots of reasons the fashion industry has changed over the years. This latest reason, the internet has finally caught the fashion industry. This is very important to me and other smaller indie/emerging design houses because we actually get to have a presence. Here are a couple of excerpts from the article:

Yet, contradictory as this may seem, the notion of a Next Big Thing in fashion may itself be culturally discordant. As in film, music and other arts, consumers have wearied of big names and labels. Except on TV, they are bored with diktats, with taste legislated by self-appointed “experts” and with camphor-scented archaisms like “stars.”

This is my favorite paragraph and happens to be that last in the article:

“Very few people have this ability to be the great designers and also generate the necessary buzz and excitement,” Ms. Gilhart of Barneys said. “It’s a trap.” So formulated around star-creation right now, she added, that the business may actually be “closing out a lot of opportunities for people who are original and good and who actually have something to say.”

The article also talks about Yves Saint Laurent’s passing and from an industry point of view what may have gone with him. He stood and still stands as a cultural icon for the industry. The fashion industry that he belonged to was artful and graceful. Fashion meant something. I really hope that part isn’t gone forever. It would mean all my training and hard work for what I really know would have been for nothing. I am hopeful that pendulum will swing back as more indie/emerging designers open up their own smaller, intimate design houses we will see some of the old fashion industry return. The part of the industry where design is really design and branding isn’t the deciding force.

I think it would really be interesting for the NY Times to follow up the article from that point of view of the smaller indie/emerging designer. Find out from our point of view what it means to us and how we see the industry in the future.

I would love to hear any and all comments because I think this is a really broad topic and just the beginning of changes. Tell me who you are, customer, designer, editor, blogger, stylist… Where do you think the internet will take the fashion industry?
