Darlings, meet Kit Bland, a writer living in Brooklyn, New York. Maybe you can help him bring back the vest.
A few words in support of the vest. I just don’t see enough vests anymore. As a child, all I ever wanted was to wear vests. Not pants or shirts—vests. I felt so grown up in a vest, even without pants. I begged my parents to buy me a three-piece suit, when all I wanted was to wear the damn vest. I wanted to wear a vest, carry a pocketwatch, use a manual typewriter, and (nearly) die in a pistol duel—but not at dawn, for obvious reasons. In college, my friend, Noel, gave me a bright red vest with images of actual-sized basset hounds on each front panel. (His mom had given it to him, but he didn’t want it, because he’s crazy.)
I have never worn out a piece of clothing the way I wore out that basset hound vest. Same goes for the reversible, Guatemalan, all-cotton number I picked up at a hippie shop in Maine during high school. Today, my favorite wardrobe item is a Danish leather shell fisherman’s vest. Sadly, there’s only ONE vest for sale in the men’s department here at SmaDar (rhymes with radar), and none for boys or girls at all. The women’s department has a handful, and they all look great, every single one of them. I hereby issue to all the clothing designers at Smashing Darling the opposite of a call to arms: MORE VESTS!
