Thanks to Somlynn Rorie, Managing Editor for Phoenix Picks , and the blogger behind the The Ugly Earring for sharing her lustworthy wants and the reasoning behind her latest Darling wish list.

I’m longing for a cross-breeding of origami and poetry in my imaginary closet, and some jewels only a taxidermist would love. In other words, fill my closet with yojhi yamamoto, some avant-garde tailoring and vintage Halston and I am one happy girl. The following are quintessential pieces to wear when pondering heavy thoughts with a pitcher of iced lemonade, a shady corner and the Waste Land by T.S. Elliot.

Clockwise from top left:

  • If a gal can’t rock a turban than she must own a hooded cape. It’s a rule. (click for KRELwear)
  • Oh, the webs we weave and the stories we tell when the gray hair starts coming in. I think of this piece (click for Coquito) as an introduction into maturity…when the stories we are most fascinated with are the stories we’ve already woven with our own hands. I can only hope my webs are as amazing as this lovely piece.
  • Wearable art that sculpts and shapes the body; highlighting and subtly hiding the unconventional curves of the female form. Plus, it’s a brooding piece but not in that Victorian, goth way. (Click here for Zsega)
  • For the vegan at heart, a faux bone pod wring. Organic, eye-striking, and nothing you would ever find at your neighborhood strip mall. The perfect everyday jewel. (Click here for Emily Watson)
  • Sometimes you have to think outside of the obvious…sure, it’s a baby pouch sling but how amazing would it look as a kimono wrap belt? Or how about if it’s layered over a tank top as some kind of jersey-knit, warrior chest-plate?

And that color orange—it’s the perfect complement for an all gray or black ensemble. (Click here for Bronwen)

  • I met the poet Allen Ginsberg during a time when I was really into the Beats and Kerouac. Unfortunately, he was more interested in the darling boy with the side part standing in line behind me after his reading.

I wonder, had I been decked out with these beatnik-fabu trousers by Laura Dawson, would he have said something more like this to me: “those are great slacks you are wearing.” (Click here for Laura Dawson)

Putting a Face to a name

by trish on February 26, 2009

Putting a face to a name is smashing – an opportunity to chat, share stories, and find common ground. There was a celebratory vibe in the air last week at the Dress Up Soiree hosted by the ever-lovely Jennine Tamm of The Coveted. Jennine is also the beauty and brains behind the Independent Fashion Bloggers Network, for whom this event was being held. Thanks to Jennine for bringing us all together both online, and off.

We were so happy to read Fast Company’s article, Recession Proof Fashion? Look for the “Made In Albama” Label. This article is music to our ears and a concept we at Smashing Darling wholeheartedly believe in from the depths of our very souls. It is one of the major reasons we built our website. We wanted to let the everyone know about all the great designers who work directly with their customers and hand make their product. We have also seen the trend of people spending money on more meaningful products. We have found that people want to connect on a personal level with the products they are buying and to connect with the designers they are buying them from. We think the trend to purchase from smaller boutique brands is only going to grow. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

‘The most heartwarming story to come out of Fashion Week is taking place far across town from the posh tents at Bryant Park, in the slightly down-at-the-heels precincts of New York’s East Village.’ (We Love this opening line of the article.)

The one line in the article that we didn’t quite understand, and in our world doesn’t need to be said is, “Despite their down-home DNA, these are hardly thrift shop garments. Chernin’s line is available at such tony shops as Barney’s, Bergdorf Goodman, and Harvey Nichols.”

Not quite sure why this needs to be stated. Don’t the pictures of this gorgeous clothing in the article speak volumes about the quality, design, and craftsmanship that went into them? It makes for a very sad thought if the general consensus is to think down-home, hand made is somehow sub prime in the fashion industry.

After you read the Fast Company article, keep your eyes open. We hope this article will make you more aware of local designers or boutiques that showcase local designers. Maybe it will make you stand in a boutique an extra moment to notice the beautiful detail of a garment. Might even make you start to wonder who designed and made it, and wonder what their story is.

Catching Up at Digital Moda

by trish on February 23, 2009

It was our pleasure to not only attend but help with the designer roster at Digital Moda. The event took place in NYC last Tuesday evening in a loft near Bryant Park. 5 out of the 10 designers on the floor at the event were part of Smashing Darling. The event was meant to bring fashion designers, fashion bloggers and people in technology together all in one place to move fashion forward int the web 2.0 world. (all photos by Guest of a Guest)

Also in attendance with us that night was Karelle Levy of Krelwear who had to sneak out early to attend a GenArt event, and Anne De Pasquale showing her beautiful hats on models. It was great to meet the designers we had not already met, catch up with designers we’ve met before and meet some new friends in the tech and fashion blogsphere.

We love it when we come across articles that help emerging designers navigate through any of the many things that come into play when designing or promoting their lines. Yesterday while perusing twitter, trying to catch up on what all of our friends are up to we saw PR Couture tweet: Top 10 DIY Fashion PR Tips for Emerging Designers. We clicked right on through to find a guest post by Polina Raygorodskaya of Polina Fashion. In this post Polina stresses many important points such as thinking outside the box, the power of the follow up and staying fresh. We love her #1 point and couldn’t agree more with it … be your own biggest fan. There is loads of useful information in this article. We hope you find the time to read it.

Last night we had a blast at Digital Moda hosted by the Style Coalition, the Next Web crew, and Pop17. Their aim being to join together fashion and tech: mission accomplished. Five darling designers and their models roamed the room mingling among guests. Guests not only were able to see the designs up close and personal, but were able to chat with designers directly. All around the town – indie everywhere

by trish on February 17, 2009

We consider ourselves lucky to be attending so many fashion events happening all around New York during this fashion week. Last Thursday Modarling spent an inspired evening at Laura Dawson’s fashion show. Click here to watch the video of her fabulous show.

The next day we found ourselves at the Bryant Park Hotel penthouse for Expose and to see Karelle Levy (Krelwear) doing KREL 2 GO. She knits up beautiful knits in her Miami studio, packs them up and takes them on the road with her – then drapes right on customers while her assistant sews them on the spot. Waiting for Modarling’s piece to be done was the perfect time to check out the other designers taking part in the show.

We were also happy to make it to the Rebecca Turbow Safe show down on Bond Street. Her clothing is fresh and modern. Large fabric bauble necklaces, large collars and ruffle neck pieces stood out against the short silhouettes. Her collection breathing an air of understatement with an all gray and black color palette.

Next stop was the Dress Up event hosted by Jennine Tam, of The Coveted and The IFB Network (Independent Fashion Bloggers). It was so nice to meet and put faces to names with lots of the IFB members.

Next stop Digital Moda, an event to bring fashion designers, bloggers and people from the tech world all together in one place to help move fashion forward in the Web 2.0 world. Five darling designers and their models will be in attendance with us, and in our book – this is fabulous.

A short video can go a long way on the internet. Here Erika Viereck, of Black Heart Bunny tells us a bit about herself and her collection. We love this and hope to see more indie designers introducing themselves to the world this way.

We would love the opportunity to help get the word out about your video too. If you are an indie/emerging designer and have a video Contact us! info@smashingdarling.com
