Industry Interview: EDUN

by Mo on June 30, 2009

Oh New York, how we love you so…instead of writing an ode to The Big Apple, we just like to introduce you to all the great people we meet as we meander through the Darling world. We had the pleasure of both sponsoring a recent Girls in Tech event as well as meeting Erik Lautier of Edun, who then generously donated gift cards to our PRCouture/Nolcha soiree – thanks Erik! Indie designers, if you are on the hunt for an ethical t-shirt supplier, read on and get to know all about the company below.

edun2

Darlings: What is EDUN/EDUN LIVE and how to did the brand come to be?
EDUN: EDUN is a socially conscious clothing company launched in Spring 2005 by Ali Hewson and Bono. EDUN’s primary goals are to create beautiful clothes using ethical conditions and to help create long-term sustainable employment in the developing world, particularly sub-Saharan Africa.

EDUN is a for-profit business – founded on the premise of Trade FOR Aid as a means of building sustainable communities. The company works on a micro-level to help build the skill sets of the people involved in making clothing.  In addition, EDUN also continues to explore partnership opportunities at a macro-level to improve working conditions and build sustainable communities where it produces.

In 2007 EDUN launched the EDUN LIVE brand. The mission of EDUN LIVE is to help foster trade and increase long-term sustainable employment in Africa through high-volume sales of blank t-shirts. From the fields where the cotton is grown, to the spinning, knitting and finally the garment making, all EDUN LIVE products are 100% Made in Africa. As EDUN LIVE matures, it aims to grow its social commitment to these areas and local factory communities. With business from its customers, EDUN LIVE will continue to work with farmers and factories to improve conditions in areas of need.

edun

Darlings: How is EDUN supporting sustainable socioeconomic development in Africa?
EDUN: Not only do EDUN and EDUN LIVE support its factories with business, the brands also support the local communities with social issues. For example, we funded the construction of a well at a local school in a community neighboring a factory. The well was built in June 2006, and children now no longer have to rely on rainwater collected in a barrel from the roof of their school. Additionally, via the ALAFA program, we educate the local factory workers on HIV/AIDS, as currently over 30% of the population is infected with the disease and have raised over $600k for the cause. The brands are also helping to raise funds to help train cotton farmers to transition from conventional (with pesticides) to organic farming via the Conservation Cotton Initiative in association with the Wildlife Conservation Society.

edun41

Darlings: What organizations are using EDUN LIVE T-shirts, and do you have any current projects running with partnering organizations?
EDUN: A broad spectrum of organizations — corporations, non-profits, schools, retailers, bands, etc. — have purchased our tees because of their high quality and the brand’s strong mission.
For example, the Signature Series t-shirt is sold in Hard Rock Cafe globally. These tees feature a design by Bono, and 15% of the gross proceeds of every tee sold go back to our Conservation Cotton Initiative fund. This fund (set up with the Wildlife Conservation Society) helps farmers learn organic cotton farming in Africa while preserving the natural landscape.  We also have an upcoming project with www.yoox.com. Supermodel Angela Lindvall has done an exclusive design on EDUN LIVE tees which will be sold on YOOX beginning June 30th, with all proceeds going back to Green Cross International.

Darlings: What is AFRICASH, and can any blogger get involved?
EDUN: AFRICASH is EDUN LIVE’s referral program; you can earn points towards free t-shirts for doing something as simple as sending a friend of yours our way.  There has always been a very strong and loyal community online supporting EDUN LIVE, and we wanted to recognize it and reward it.  Not only can any blogger get involved, you can even get involved by mentioning us in an email to a friend, posting about us on your Facebook status, or even Tweeting about us (@edunlive is our account!).  For more information, simply go to www.edun-live.com.

edun3

Darlings: Does EDUN hope to be a major supplier of sustainable piece goods for the fashion industry, or will all the sustainable fabric EDUN produces be kept in house?
EDUN: EDUN does not have plans to become a supplier to the industry.  We will continue to produce ethical fashion to the consumer via our retailer partners. It is our intention to have our own retail stores in the near future as well as extend the brand into other categories such as accessories, shoes and bags.  EDUN LIVE will continue to grow both its consumer and trade business by providing basic garments (such as tees and hoodies) made 100% in Africa.

Saturday July 18th WORN AGAIN nola3 (a benefit for Recycle For The Arts) promises to be the socially conscious social event of the season.  WORN AGAIN designers deconstruct the random recycled materials we give them to create innovative works of wearable art.  Forty of these artists will be chosen by our elite jury to rock the WORN AGAIN runway with amazing creativity.

We are happy to Congratulate darling designer DRES for winning in the category of Best Green Handbag. You can see all of this years winners at Handbag Designer 101.

DRES Website: http://www.dresdesign.com
Bag Born: 2009

The Bag is made of Envirotech Recycled Tire Rubber Clutch with Re-Used Lion Head Drawer Pull. The designer went on the hunt for a recycled rubber product and finally found it on the internet. Andres produces all of the bags himself and says that this recycled rubber is difficult to work with so there is a lot of hand finishing on each bag. We love his design philosophy of ‘less is more’. How appropriate for the winner of the Best Green Bag Award.

So Happy to Meet You all!

darling designers

left to right in this photo: (in back) Nancy Wells – Nancy Wells, Lukas, Modarling, (in front) April Torres – Isabella Grace Originals, Bob Bland – Brooklyn Royalty, Trishdarling, Crosby Noricks – PR Couture, Anjia Jalac – Love, Anjia, Rachel’s friend, Rachel U – Lola’s Rags

Wow, we feel the need to let everyone know how great it was for Modarling and I, Trishdarling, to meet so many Smashing Darling designers all in one place last Thursday evening. Including one of the very first designers, Rachel Park, to sign up to our website and create a boutique. She must have had so much faith in us to join when we were basically an empty shell. Now, 2 1/2 years, 600 designers, and countless emails later, we finally had the privilege to meet her and many others face to face. We are inspired by the people we are surrounded by. We learn so much from each personal interaction we have. We can’t say enough about how much this means to us!

Fashion Meet Up
As everyone knows, events are made amazing by the people who attend. So a huge-smashing-thanks goes out to all who attended our PR Couture, Nolcha, and Smashing Darling fashion meet up Thursday night. We know not everyone could be there so we would like to extend that thank you to all who kept the vibe good in the universe by wishing us well and wishing they could be there. It takes a community to pull this kind of impromptu event off, so thanks of course go to our amazing sponsors who donated to the goodie bags. Extra cheers to Pamela of Market Publique for the birthday mini cupcakes (yum!), and her help behind-the-scenes.  Last, but not least, a big darling thank you goes out to all of our designers who attended. It was so great to meet the people behind the beautiful collections listed on Smashing Darling.

The fashion meet up event was to welcome Crosby Noricks, PR Couture maven, to the east coast. We thought it would be fun to meet her in person after chatting with her online through twitter for almost 2 years. We connected with Kerry of Nolcha, who provided the beautiful retail space they share with Shane and Shawn shoes, as the venue for the event.

Stay tuned in to the blog for future events; we look forward to meeting each and everyone of you. Until then, enjoy some pictures from the event, go to Guest of a Guest to see them all.

My summer wedding is approaching and I still haven’t picked a dress for the big event. I am definitely a non-traditional bride and we already tied the knot in NYC, so I am looking for a fun, light and airy dress with some frill but easy to dance in. Organizing a wedding on the Black sea coast and inviting an international crowd is not making my task easier, especially when most of my friends are in fashion. I would like to surprise people but still be an elegant bride!
I’ve been looking at some of the fabulous designers on Smashing Darling and already like a few glam pieces:

picture-311

A t-shirt ballgown like this one might be quite fun but it should really be in white!

The dead butterfly bird skull dress might not sound appropriate in name but has the lightness I like, with a summer influence and a touch of color! The butterflies are quite a wonderful touch!

I would love a gorgeous headpiece that goes with the summer, flowery, feathery theme, maybe the Beax feathered cloche.

Maybe a pale yellow silk gown with a sexy back would be the perfect summer wedding dress. I love how the back is!

I love that this bishop dress is made from organic cotton and natural dyes and it has an elegant but relaxed attitude, but I’ll have to go heavy on the jewelry for it!

And last but certainly not least the jewels. This 18 Kt gold locket necklace with sea pearls and champagne diamonds seems quite perfect to me!

And the more I dig into it the more I realize I have so much more to see: a veil, a tiara, earrings, shoes, my head is spinning from the shopping excitement!
