About the designer:
My name is Stuart Breidenstein. I created this store as an outlet for one-of a kind and small runs of my newest jewelry. I make each piece by hand, (with the help of some robot pals) and I pay very close attention to detail. I like working with sterling silver and other metals, as well as wood and recycled/repurposed stuff, but what I really get excited about is exothermic polymerization! I constantly try to innovate and invent processes so that my jewelry stays fresh and is always on the cutting edge. Here’s a website where you can view archives of older pieces:

As emerging designers, we know how hard it can be to get everything done in a day that we need to get done for our collections never mind pounding the pavement to get it out there for boutiques to see and hopefully purchase. What most people don’t realize is how far apart boutiques are that carry independent and emerging designers, only adding to the difficulty. Well help is finally on the way. Showrooms dedicated to emerging/independent fashion designers are starting to pop up.
Today we have 2 that we would like to share with you that just might be the answer to your prayers. We will continue to unearth others and keep you posted.
The Garment Industry Development Corp. (GIDC) proudly introduces Showroom NY, featuring a select group of designers who produce in New York. GIDC has an exciting mission to strengthen the local apparel industry and help maintain New York City’s position as a global fashion capital. Over the last two decades, GIDC has become the place where design meets production, linking designers, labels, retailers and the City’s high quality manufacturers.

True Collaborative Fashion is a Portland, OR based showroom that represents independent fashion designers with a conscience. We are not out to save the world, we just like working with companies that try to do things a little better.
Style, color, fit and quality are still the most important elements of fashion for our designers. But, where a product is made, who makes it and what it is made from matter.
Our lines strive to create a modern style and aesthetic, rather then trendy throwaway fashion. They like to manufacture locally in sweatshop free shops with fair labor practices, use environmentally friendly materials, when available, and help build communities through locally owned small business.
Please share with us any others you know about or have worked with we would love to share them with the community.
Cheers,

Shop full collection of Katie Burley’s hats here.
About the designer:
I was born and raised in Washington, DC. I followed my heart and my hands to the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD where I studied Fibers and Wearable Sculpture. There, my love of all things cranial was unveiled.
After many interesting adventures, from working in a one room “sweat shop” in NYC, to making one of a kind hats for the runway, I now call San Francisco home.
I hand block and hand trim each hat, with selected materials that are few of a kind or vintage, making each piece couture. Inspired my pieces of discarded history, hunting in alley ways and digging through thrift shops for abandoned souls.

I feel like I have failed the community! I found out about this awesome exhibit (that I won’t be able to see) a few weeks ago and forgot to post. This exhibit looks so amazing. A good one to see to get the creativity flowing. Ivana Ristic deconstructs men’s clothing and reconstructs it into ultra feminine, modern clothing, and is just truly inspiring. Please, please, please if you go to see it, or have been, I would love to hear more about and would love to see pictures. Any info would be great. Go, Go, Go … there is only today and tomorrow. Show ends Aug. 27th. I hope this blog post reaches at least one person that hasn’t seen it and now will go.
Jennine from The Coveted caught up with the artist/designer a few times. To read more about Ivana Ristic check out, Having Tea With Ivana Ristic and Ivana Ristic – Deconstructed Process

More fun is emerging all around the city for this up and coming fashion week/season. I am so happy to see so many independent fashion shows popping up all around town and neighboring boroughs. It brings back the days when even branded designers had to come up with there own venues. There were no tents in Bryant Park, (people were still being mugged there at the time). This memory was brought on by a press release I recently received. It started of with: LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. … wow, I will be dating myself a bit here but when I was a student at FIT in the mid to late 80’s, designers would post positions on the job board to volunteer to dress for the fashion week shows. One show I was lucky enough to dress for was Rei Kawakubo for Comme de Garcon, in of all places … you guessed it, LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. I believe it was in an old warehouse or something. I am sure this made fashion week harder on everyone because the shows took place all over the city. It wasn’t all neatly packaged under one roof, in one location, with one vibe like it is today. It was harder, a little more gritty but a lot more interesting. For me, and I may be in the minority here, I liked it better back then. The runway shows had personality. From the moment you arrived at the venue for a fashion show in the 80’s the tone was being set.
I feel very lucky to have experienced fashion week back then and am very happy a whole new generation, if they so choose, can have that same experience only this time with a new wave of designers that are just now emerging that don’t always believe bigger is better, or that homogenized is the way to go.
Below are the details to just one such show. Keep tuning into the blog to read about more shows happening and if you know of a show contact us or leave a comment on the blog. we would love to help get the word out. – trishdarling
