Designer Toolbox: Resources and Rewards

by Mo on February 19, 2010

What Do You Think?

It’s pretty amazing to watch the fashion industry slowly starting to transform, it is right? Each season the industry is embracing social media more and more, and thousands of bloggers are psyched to show off their personal style and their favorite designers. With the voice of the individual so strong, trends seem to be headed out the back door. Check out this WSJ article, and please, tell us what you think.
Facebook Fans are Winners

Listen up Darlings, pretty please?! We have a  rolling monthly giveaway happening over at our Smashing Darling Fan page on Facebook. Once a month one lucky fan will receive a $50 gift certificate just for being there and showing support for independent fashion. Each month a fan will be selected randomly on the last day of the month. Take a minute and be sure to share this with your friends and fans, after all they could end up spending that cash in your boutique!
Darling Rewards

We had a thought, shouldn’t all our shoppers be rewarded for supporting indie fashion designers? Of course they should! Coming very, very soon Darling shoppers will gain credit for shopping the site – AND it will be retroactive. The reward credit will be based on the average of what a shopper spends, so the more they buy, the more they get. All the details coming soon!
Resources for Darling You

We are always on the lookout for resources to help independent designers. If you have a favorite, please share it with us -just comment or pop us an email. Keep an eye on these new sites for indie business support:

- www.RetailAGoGo.com: A new project started up by a favorite marketing darling, @Macala. Business advice for emerging designers, we love it!
- www.craftmba.com: Kudos to Darling Megan Auman for her new site, “Crafting an MBA asks, what would business school look like if it was geared towards crafters, designers, and makers?”
cheers! ~ the Darlings

First of all, thanks for mentioning craftmba – what a great resource!

Regarding the WSJ article, I agree with Christina Binkley that fashion trends are ‘out.’ I see it as the democratization of fashion. Maybe there is a convergence of factors taking place: continued rise of social media and influcence of friends and communities – less influence of authority figures and institutions; in general; a society that is very casual – people dress in jeans almost everywhere they go; cultural trend of ‘do it yourself’, which includes how we dress.

Also, I think the Wall Street Journal has had great coverage of NY fashion week.

I love that personal style is the surfacing trend from high fashion to DIY, and everything in between. I think fashion itself will benefit greatly from people identifying with clothing/accessories and designs/designers that speak personally to their aesthetic and identity. Because of social media they get to have that conversation and decide for themselves without the guidance or permission of authority figures and institutions.

Love the democratization of fashion. I think this opens the industry up to growth in terms of seeing more smaller fashion houses and individuals being able to build a more sustainable, loyal following. I think the magazines will catch the vibe and start speaking to people in these terms. At some point to survive they will have to really put their weight behind their own aesthetic instead of pushing only big brands because they are the ones that can afford advertising. It is such an exciting time to be in fashion!

… and completely agree, Craft MBA is a good one!
