Style Week Providence, RI

by trish on March 31, 2010

wireDresses

Providence, RI gets it. They are dedicating a whole week of style events inviting local designers to take the stage. I am happy to shout this out for two reasons. One, I love the highlight on local independent fashion designers because, as we all know, fashion in the US doesn’t only happen in NYC. And two, because a couple of the painstakingly chosen designers are part of our community. There is another bonus here, the emphasis is on style. I like independent, personal style … it makes me happy knowing not every one will look the same.

StyleWeek Providence is a week long celebration of the fashion, design and culture. At its core are daily formal, invitation-only runway fashion shows for buyers, press and stylists from the Northeast and major metropolitan areas throughout the country. Modeled on major Fashion Weeks in cities like New York, Milan, Paris and London; StyleWeek Providence is New England’s only fashion week event that focuses on the business of fashion. StyleWeek’s shows feature a range of designers, introducing both new talent and latest collections from internationally recognized fashion houses to buyers and media.

Darling designers showing during Style Week include David Chum – Selah D’or, Catalina De La Torre, & Andrea Valentini.

Today I am dreaming of the day when I can work with a photographer who can help me convey my brand. I found these lovely photos on Facebook of the new PINaR ERIS, Electrogeisha Collection. I wanted to share these with the community because Pinar always does an amazing job conveying her brand through the photos taken of her collections.

This is the place I strive to be. Independent fashion designers, such as Pinar, always inspire me and give me hope for where I know I will be someday with my brand. There are only so many hours in the day, and for now most of those hours are spent running Smashing Darling, my other love. It is because of Smashing Darling I am now surrounded by so much talent I never would have known. Being tucked away in a small little town of 3500 in the Connecticut River Valley sometimes makes it difficult to  meet other independent fashion designers … but not any more.

Leave me a comment and a link to someone who inspires you to greatness. Do you dream about what could be better about your branding and how to convey the message better? What obstacles are standing in your way? Is there anything you can do today to get one little step closer to your goal? I had a great conversation with jewelry designer Dina Varano the other day, and she reminded me to not only work in my business but ON my business.

Fashion PR + Online Trends

We are always combing the internet to find information that will help independent fashion designers promote themselves and their brands. Crosby of PR Couture is a wealth of valuable information. Make sure to add her blog to your daily reads if you own your own label or are thinking about it. Being a fashion designer is so much more than just drawing pretty pictures. We will talk more about all of that later. Today your job is to learn at least one new thing about how you can streamline your PR to make it more effective for you and your company.

The State of Independent Fashion
Fashion designers held about 22,700 jobs in 2008. About 31 percent of fashion designers worked for apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers; and 13 percent worked for apparel manufacturers. Many others were self employed. Little or no change in employment is projected.**

More and more fashion programs (often without a small business focus) + inspired students + fewer jobs = a large community of independent designers out there on their own. We want to help. What do you need help with most? Please drop us an email or comment and let us know.

Build Community
In case you missed it, we added location to your boutique (read more). When we complete the search by area function, consumers will be able to type in a location and see the designers near by, and if you like, you can connect with your local Darlings!
Just as a reminder, you can help us build our community by sending us fashion events happening near you, or local boutiques supporting independent fashion. If you have had a good or bad experience with a show or event we want to hear about it. Sharing your experience can help another designer down the road.

Audey Fashion Show Video

by trish on March 26, 2010

YouTube Preview Image

I am so happy @modarling found this video! This is for all of us who could not attend Jess Audey’s recent fashion show in Chicago. The show ends with the debut of her fun, inexpensive bridal dresses being worn by models pirouetting down the runway with pretty tulle peeking out of the hem.
