Let them eat cake t-shirt

Let Them Eat Cake tank by fifty-seven thirty-three

Happy Birthday fifty-seven thirty-three! Wish we could have been in Oakland to celebrate with you yesterday!

Marie-Antoinette is said to have uttered these words upon being told that the French populace had no bread to eat. In fact, it had nothing to do with that at all and is widely misunderstood. Marie-Antoinette was actually quite preoccupied with HOT girl on girl action. This American Apparel boy beater attempts to set history straight… um I mean correct.

Hand screen printed with water-based, solvent free, eco-friendly inks on American made, sweatshop free tank. Shop the full collection in fifty-seven thirty-three’s Smashing Darling boutique.

Brooklyn Museum

Brooklyn Museum Presents:

American High Style: Fashioning a National Collection

May 7 – August 15

To mark the new relationship between the Brooklyn Museum and the Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum presents an exhibition of some of the most renowned objects from its costume collection. American High Style consists of approximately eighty-five dressed mannequins and a selection of hats, shoes, sketches, and other fashion-related material that will reintroduce the collection, long in storage, to the public. The exhibition is organized in groups representing the most important strengths of the collection. Works by the first generation of American women designers such as Bonnie Cashin, Elizabeth Hawes, and Claire McCardell are featured, as well as material created by Charles James, Norman Norell, Gilbert Adrian, and other important American designers. Also included are works by French designers who had an important influence on American women and fashion, such as Charles Frederick Worth, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jeanne Lanvin, Jeanne Paquin, Madeleine Vionnet, and Christian Dior. The Metropolitan Museum of Art will celebrate the arrival of the Brooklyn Museum costume collection at the Met with a related exhibition, American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity, on view May 5–August 15, 2010.

The post backs are sterling silver (if you’d prefer the earrings on french wires, please convo me). The coordinating pendant is pictured in the last photo and listed separately in my store. Because these pieces are handcrafted and made to order, please allow up to one week for completion.

In Your Experience…
This month began with the news of GenArt closing it’s doors after 16 years supporting emerging artists across the country: fashion, film, music. While this was sad news for so many, the news left us with lots of questions: What will replace it? How can indie artists come together to support each other in a way that is financially viable today?

It was also unsettling to read that many designers had lost money in the fallout, including Kate Boggiano who has a boutique here at Smashing Darling. Have you ever lost money to a production company? Is there a solution to situations like this? How do you protect yourself? Please comment or send us an email (trishandjulie@smashingdarling.com) if you have advice for fellow designers.
