From the monthly archives:

July 2010

This Friday-Sunday, July 30 – Aug. 1 12pm to 6pm.

I can”t believe by the time this pop-up shop is done, Aug. 1 will be here! August 1, how did this happen?!? I feel like I blinked and July is over. I am reminding myself there is still plenty of summer left to enjoy. Just because school will begin at the end of this month, does not mean summer is over … not by a long shot. There are still plenty of cool events and happenings for us all to enjoy!

Kingdom’s Summer Pop-Up Shop at The Knitting Factory, is a good example of summer fun continuing. Their full range of Spring//Summer clothing and jewelry will be 25% off for the first time ever. Shop all of their local independent fashion  designers, check out the latest gallery show + enjoy refreshing drink specials in the bar area of The Knitting Factory at 361 Metropolitan Avenue, right off the Bedford L Train.

Mid-summer stretch Darlings! What’s happening? Getting ready for fall? Selling out at many a summer market?…all of the above? Don’t forget to send us your events (trishandjulie@smashingdarling.com) so we can help spread the word!  We love seeing the number of Darling designers click higher and higher, so take a look around and help us welcome the newcomers. Who knows maybe you’ll end up doing a bit of shopping yourself!

Speaking of which, we’re curious about how much time you and your customers have to be social, and how much time you all have to shop. Please take a quick moment and let us know your thoughts.

New Features
We definitely think it is important to take a break to relax and regroup every now and again. Now it’s easier to let your customers know you are away. Log into your Darling account and you’ll see a new tab where you can set your vacation mode when you decide to dissappear: easy-peasy!

Ready to clear out some inventory? Now shoppers can see the dollars they will save when shopping in the Sale tab of your boutique. Both the original price and the sale price will be listed. Go re-list your sale items for the new feature to kick in!

…and you told all your fans about the Frequent Shopper Program already, right? (wink, nudge.)

Wish I could swing on down to New Orleans this weekend and go see the recycled creations that come down the runway. Each designer is challenged to create a wearable garment out of a pile of fabric castaways, a.k.a trash. Read all about it, and other local indie over at MissMalaprop, read some local press about the event, and of course if you go … share some images with us!

What: A recycled fashion competition with proceeds benefiting Press Street, a local nonprofit arts and literature collective
When: Saturday. Patron party at 7:30 p.m., show at 9:30 p.m.
Where: Howlin’ Wolf, 907 S. Peters St.
Tickets: $50 for the patron party; $15 for the fashion show, available at the door or by calling 504.522.9653

Independent Fashion SF: Market U

by trish on July 22, 2010

Market U

SF Indie has paired up with 6th Generation Media to present:

Market U: PR & Media Outreach 101 for Local Fashion Businesses

I am really sad I am not in San Francisco. This looks like an awesome seminar. Who doesn’t need help marketing their product? I am so busy designing and making my product, sometimes the my marketing falls through the cracks. Maybe someday they will be able to offer this online for the whole Smashing Darling community and indies everywhere to take advantage of, but for now it for the lucky SF independent fashion industry peeps that get to attend this one. I will admit, I am a little jealous.

The seminar is designed to help emerging and established independent designers, boutique owners, stylists, makeup artists and other small businesses in the local fashion industry hone their media outreach and public relations skills. The event is the ideal way to boost your small business marketing and PR initiatives while networking with other local businesses owners.

What: Market U
When: Aug. 3, 2010 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Pigment Cosmetics, One Market St., SF
Cost: $35 per person (advance registration required – no tickets will be available at the door). A portion of the proceeds will benefit the San Francisco Bay Area Fashion Network. Buy your tickets now.

Here is some of what will be covered:

During this one-night event, you’ll learn concrete, hands-on tactics and strategies that you can use to better promote your business on your own and gain increased media coverage in the future:

  • The do’s and don’ts of contacting journalists
  • Typical ways companies are featured in the media- Press release basics
  • The top public relations myths
  • Easy social media strategies for getting noticed
  • Key strategies for managing your own public relations efforts
  • Why your web site might be hampering your success
  • Much more!

They’ll go beyond the fluff and leave you with real ideas that you can act upon immediately, regardless of the size of your business or your marketing budget.

Register for Market U: Media & Marketing Workshop for Small Businesses in San Francisco, CA on Eventbrite

the lady is lingering

the lady is lingering

i heart fink just landed in our Flickr pool recently and shared some of their indie love… my, my – we think these dames are darling!

2 dames making unique handmade clothing from scratch. we hand print the fabric using our original art and designs.

Read their blog, join them on Facebook.

Whether you are designing your own clothes, or just want to support independent fashion, come show us your favorites –pretty please?

We want YOU to show US your best independent design and style. We want to know what influences you, inspires you, what makes your life happy everyday and how you reflect that with what you put on. Why do you feel good about who you are and the way you look. Why was that piece so important to wear the day you wore it. Did it have as much fun on the date as you did? If that piece of fashion could talk, what would it say.
