Unique LA, August 14 & 15

UNIQUE LA’s History: Making Consumerism Count
Started in December 2008, UNIQUE LA is now the largest independent design & gift show in the country! We created the event to allow shoppers to discover great local, independent design while taking part in community and supporting the local economy.  The coolest thing about the show is that attendees get the rare chance to meet and shop directly from over 300 hand-selected designers and artists. Our mandate is that 90% of the vendors are local (LA and California), with a sprinkling of amazing American talent from around the country such as Brooklyn, Athens and Portland.

(…SO darling!)

Finding all the wonderful darlings around the U.S. of A. supporting local designers and their community is so inspiring and happy-making.  Mallory Whitfield has been blogging about her independent and sustainable lifestyle in New Orleans since 2006 – before Smashing Darling was even born!  Get to know the NOLA creative community a bit better by checking out her blog: MissMalaprop. While you are there be sure to check out the images from the recent Worn Again NOLA show. Thanks to Mallory for playing with us, and sharing some of her Darling favorites. Cheers!

Mallory Whitfield, aka MissMallaprop

My style tends to be about a lot of bright pops of color, balanced out with neutral tones like black or grey, or paired with the simplicity of denim. Browsing around Smashing Darling, I found myself drawn to the same color palette over and over – rich jewel tone fuchsia colors and buttery yellows. For some reason these colors were screaming summer to me, and even though summer will be near its end soon (though not soon enough here in the Deep South where I live!), I think these pieces can easily transition into autumn looks.

Darling Editor's Picks

Take these Orbis earrings by Ensō for instance. These beautiful jewels look like tasty fruit, and would look great with a t-shirt and jeans, but could also add a splash of color to that little black dress.

Need more candy colored inspiration? Check out the Sweet Dreams Pendant Necklace by Deanna Burasco Kansas City.

The Jillian Tank by OrganiK Revolution is made of a soy jersey/organic cotton blend (which I love!) and also works great for day or night. Dress it down with denim or work it with a skirt and blazer.

I recently discovered designer Kristin Hassan, and her Cristina Flow Tank is one of my personal favorites. Flirty and fun and perfect for summer, but throw on a jacket and this look works for fall too.

How to pull all those crazy colors together? Keep it simple everywhere else, and go for accessories like this Cami bag in beige by Mi Mo Handbags.

Indie NC, Raleigh: First Friday Market

by Mo on August 6, 2010

Shop local and meet the designers behind the products

On the first Friday of every month a curated selection of designers set up and sell their wares in an empty storefront in downtown Raleigh. There are different designers at each event. Participants range from jewelry to apparel designers and come from all over the state – as well as the country, but many or your very talented neighbors. The event is free and hours are from 6pm-10pm. Read more in the IndieNC blog.

We see pros and cons when it comes to the land of reality tv shows. We like to believe shows like Project Runway and Bravo’s The Fashion Show can bring independent designers some amazing opportunities for their brand…but we can’t turn a blind eye to the negative experiences. We applaud Darling Kimberly Hendrix who found out she wasn’t selected to be part of Season 8 of Project Runway, but is participating on her own, from her home studio.

Why not, right? Kimberly has committed to taking on each weekly Project Runway challenge, recording her own design process, and posting her results versus the shows winner in her video blog for fans to vote on and compare. Hmmm, maybe some of you lovely Darlings out there want to join in the fun? Send us your video posts if you do! Watch Kimberly’s first video post above, and check back to her blog for updates and thoughts on the process of it all.

I love the way the fabric flows in this wrap cardigan just spotted in the Darling Flickr Pool. Draped fabric inspires me to try and make metal jewels that have that same movement, or maybe I just need to start making clothes? We shall see! Get to know this Canadian designer, Tangente,  better by reading her blog. We know it’s often hard for independent designers to connect with photographers to get professional shots of their designs; she talks a bit about the joy of collaborating on this photo shoot and how it all happened in her blog – love it!

Whether you are designing your own clothes, or just want to support independent fashion, come show us your favorites –pretty please?

We want YOU to show US your best independent design and style. We want to know what influences you, inspires you, what makes your life happy everyday and how you reflect that with what you put on. Why do you feel good about who you are and the way you look. Why was that piece so important to wear the day you wore it. Did it have as much fun on the date as you did? If that piece of fashion could talk, what would it say.
