The arts create and bestow community identity. A strong identity rallies confidence, hope, productivity, pride and economic vibrancy. These are base conditions for a healthy community; they cannot be created, however without risk, adventure, and the willingness to embrace the new. (MASS MoCA Mission Statement)

I spent New Year’s Day zipping up the road to MASS MoCA to start the year off with some inspiration. Getting there to take in the Sol LeWitt retrospective has been on my list and I needed to cross it off; 1.1.11 seemed like the perfect day to do so. My smashing companion sang and played air guitar (rock on co-pilot) while I drove wonderfully winding roads west across Massachusetts, eventually landing in North Adams. I wish that all the old mills across the U. S. of A. were being used in the same way, how can we make that happen? Maybe each mill housing production and retail space for independent fashion designers? A darling can, and will, dream.
I had some fun snapping shots with my phone, here are some below, check them all out in our Darling Flickr. Get yourself there if you can to see the Petah Coyne exhibition, a few models in PapuzaCouture would have fit in just perfectly. (Petah Coyne image gallery here.)

Mending Circle with Sewing Rebellion

JANUARY 6, 6:30PM @ Textile Arts Center
New Year, New Life. Get ready to raid your closet and remedy your wardrobe.
We have the perfect thing to help you stick to your resolution to shop less in 2011. Along with Sewing Rebellion NYC and special monthly guests, we present to you a new free monthly workshop: The Mending Circle.
Once upon a time, people knew how to fix their clothing and give them more meaning. Together we can help slow down wasteful textile production and learn + share new skills.
Bring clothes to mend, new and old projects, friends and skills and knowledge to share. We’ll have sewing machines, needles, thread, notions and friendly faces to help you.
The main goal of the Textile Arts Center is to provide support to fiber artists, and everyday people interested in working with fiber, by acting as a resource facility and creative meeting place.
