Rhode Islanders launch a national day of “no culture” to call attention to  the value of the creative sector in American life.

image_left

Do you ever wonder what your life would look like without your creative inspirations and passions? How would you be different? How would the world around you look? The newly formed group, Culture Stops, based in Providence, RI asks us all to stop and think about it. We don’t have to think too hard, and we’re sure you don’t either. Please join us this March 10th and take a day of peaceful action against the proposed budget cuts in arts and humanities funding across the country.  This doesn’t mean you have to shut down entirely for the day; you can simply grab a badge from their website and change your Facebook profile, add it to your blog or homepage, tell your friends. Spread the word and let them know we matter.

MARCH 10TH – CULTURE STOPS

On Thursday, March 10th, 2011, Culture Stops! will ask you to imagine a world where writers put down their pens and artists put down their paints. Where architects stop designing our cities and poets, dancers and sculptors stop teaching our children. Where our national landmarks fall into decay. Where debate is no longer fostered in our universities, or on our radio dials. Where our symphony halls fall silent and our libraries go dark. Where our collective history is left unmade and unwritten.

There isn’t much that can be said that hasn’t already been said about sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte, and the exhibit States of Matter … the good, the bad, and the controversial. But we can say that we are always happy to see fashion designers pushing the limits, raising the bar, and inspiring all to aspire to something higher creatively.

‘States of Matter’ features the dance costumes and tutus designed for the movie Black Swan.

By removing the garments from the figure and creating an installation around them, the focus will be entirely on the dresses and tutus as singular sculptural objects rather than pieces that are reliant on their relationship to the human form,” said Associate Curator Rebecca Morse. “Their inherent narrative qualities will be revealed.

Picture-3 All photos by Markiss Good

Independent designer Gwen Beloti presented her FW 2011 collection a week or so ago during NYFW. Check out these snapshots from the show for a preview of new designs coming soon to her Darling boutique. Back in 2009 Gwen started an initiative, Fashionably Smart, Literally:

The project is designed to encourage, promote and reward education in young women. Every year the Gwen Beloti Collection teams up with a High School of which a Fashionably Smart, Literally™ young lady will be selected. This student though having experienced some form of a challenge manages to overcome and excel in their academics and for that GB would like to reward them.

We love that for Gwen, it’s: More Than Just Fashion. Such a great way to give back to the community, and inspire. Darlings, you never cease to amaze us.
