A Moment At McQueen: Savage Beauty

by Mo on August 8, 2011

We hope you made it to the McQueen exhibit at The Met. In our minds, it was one of those NY moments not to missed. Lee (Alexander) McQueen was the epitome of independent fashion; he elevated our craft to it’s highest level. To be in the presence of his handmade creations made our jaws drop at moments in awe. He is one of the greats that will be inspiring young designers for years to come. For a quick moment from our experience click on the image below and watch the shadows dance….

If you couldn’t make it, do yourself a favor and set aside some time to scroll through the curators selected images here.

We’re creating a model for sustainable design education that doesn’t yet exist.

Eeeeek! We are late and we are sorry! We meant to shout out this amazing campaign sooner, and here we are in the last hours. No matter, get over to IndieGoGo and support these darlings if you can. Bahar Shahpar and Tara St. James, of Guilded, are building a structure for all surrounding sustainability in fashion design. Yes, they aim to give us a language we can all speak together. Read on about where these ideas were born in this great interview at Ecouterre. Oh, and don’t miss the perks come along with your donation!

Our Story

If you watched the video, you already know a little bit about us and what brought us here. After years of working in the fashion industry, we realized what a destructive impact the clothing and textile industry can have on communities, environments and economies around the world, so we committed ourselves to researching and promoting sustainable design as a solution.

Find the perfect additions to your late summer wardrobe in the Darling boutique of Laura Dawson. We went way back and grabbed a tidbit from our interview with her below, read the full interview here.

Darlings: What is your design process?
Laura: um, chaos? i usually look at how larger factors might influence people’s behavior and attitudes. i pull in influences and trends from art, politics, furniture, nature, streetwear, film, music, accident, magazines. just life really. i bottle it and let it all distill for a few months and determine what the essence is so that i can strike through the heart of what people are feeling next.

Cynthia Jones Jewelry strives to achieve an understated sophistication with pieces such as her most basic teardrop earring. Weight plays a major part in the design process. Keeping her pieces as light as possible, Cynthia ensures that in addition to being visually simple, they take on an effortlessly light form. The occasional use of colored stones (jaspers, jade, labdorite, moss agate, carnelian) helps women to accent their wardrobe with deep purples, pale greens and rich ambers. Ignoring trends, Cynthia creates contemporary, handcrafted jewelry that is timelessly modern, and appropriate for any occasion.
