“Principals of Design: Pratt Fashion Alumni,” an exhibition of haute couture, womenswear, menswear, costume, and shoe and accessory designs by 21 alumni from Pratt’s Department of Fashion Design. The exhibition will take place at 144 West 14th Street, Second Floor, from September 9 through October 9, 2011, and will highlight the diversity, influence, and talent of professional designers who began their careers with a Pratt education. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is guest-curated by Sarah Scaturro, a textile conservator at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and adjunct instructor at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), with Pratt Adjunct Assistant Professor Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman serving as the Pratt faculty advisor.

Allison has always been intrigued by fashion; starting out as an astute fondness for playing dress-up. Later, it became a source of rebellion…she didn’t want, under any circumstances, to adopt the conservative, cloned styles that were worn by her peers in the small Midwestern town in which she was raised. At age fourteen, Allison’s mother enrolled her in a sewing class, and she quickly discovered her ability to visualize an outfit, then create it with her own two hands. Never one to want to blend in with everybody else, she fell in love with the idea of being able to make and wear a garment that nobody else on the planet possessed….the ultimate in individuality and self-expression. Either way, rest your feet and refill your style inspiration via the big screen. Fashion and film collide at the Museum of Arts and Design, starting this Friday.
A weekend of screenings, panel discussions, and receptions will bring together designers, filmmakers, and cinema lovers with an avid curiosity about how film and fashion intersect and inspire each other.

This Fashion Week, MAD partners with Vanity Fair and the Film Society to celebrate fashion, design, and style on the silver screen. Co-curated by Simon Doonan, creative ambassador-at-large for Barneys New York, “Fashion in Film” showcases a series of innovative cinematic moments that have expectedly and unexpectedly influenced the worlds of style and fashion.
