This quote makes my heart sing, “Garment manufacturing is quietly thriving in San Francisco, thanks to a plethora of local designers producing handmade clothing here in small batches…”
It is so amazing to see clothing manufacturing on an upswing in the US, not because of big businesses, but because of independent local designers with small businesses. Thank goodness for social media. If it weren’t for twitter I am not sure I would have seen this article, How Clothes Are Made: An Inside Look At Garment Manufacturing in SOMA. SF Indie Fashion posted it in their tumblr blog. It’s worth the read.

Seattle peeps who love slow fashion and shopping locally made goods, Thread is coming to town again. It is never to early in the season to holiday shop or birthday shop for that matter. I know I have gotten very good about buying things when I see them even if I have to hang onto for 6 months. You gotta get when you see it. It feels really good to mosey around and take in the whole experience. Little by little your eyes will start to notice items perfect for family and friends. The best part, the person behind the table wrapping your new found handmade treasure in tissue … probably made said object. Gifts are that much more special when they come from with a story. So make sure to strike up a conversation. You’ll be hooked.

Is it really an ambush if you know it’s coming? In this case I think the answer is, yes. Get ready San Diego, because it is coming. What is it? Exhibit Ambush. The first fashion show of it’s kind in San Diego where unique emerging designers are encouraged let their style fly. No dumbing the collection down for the runway here. Avante garde is welcome. Everything I am reading about this show is saying the same thing … basically expect everything and anything. You’ve been forewarned, this is a multi-sensory fashion show. Darling designer Karelle Levy, KRELwear, will be one of the designers taking over the subway track runway. Have we peaked your curiosity yet? There is more info about the event on the Exhibit Ambush website.
Where:
HORTON PLAZA
San Diego, CA
When:
Saturday, Oct 22, 2011
7:00 PM – 11:00 PM

FASHION DRAFT NYC: ARE YOU READY TO BE DRAFTED?
We are usually shouting out the great accomplishments of already working independent fashion designers. Today we are speaking to talented college seniors with their sites set on the fast paced life of the New Your Fashion Industry. Was there a time when fashion companies could look in the own back yards to find the perfect person for the job? If so, this isn’t the case anymore. There are so many colleges all over the world training the future fashion. The companies involved in Fashion Draft NYC understand the person they are looking for may not be in NYC. The awesome part, they are willing to pay for all food, travel, and lodging expenses. Students need only apply if the are interested to interview for full-time, management-track positions at companies in the New York City fashion industry, such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Gilt Groupe, and LF USA.
The inaugural Fashion Draft NYC, is a program from The New York City Economic Development Corporation and The New School through its division Parsons The New School for Design (“Parsons”) that will select top graduating college seniors from around the world and bring them to New York City. The program, which will be held from Thursday evening, February 16th, through Saturday, February 18th, 2012, will include opportunities to network with fashion industry executives, learn more about the business of fashion and interview with some of the City’s top fashion firms.
All applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on November 3rd, 2011.
Each application package must include:
