Our new Event Calendar is live! Now we can all be in the know. Take advantage of spreading the word about events you are having or other indie fashion events in your area. Just click on events on the Darling homepage. It is super quick and easy, and you can load up a pretty little image to go with. Anyone in Miami? Don’t miss the KRELwear sunset garden party this Monday night to debut her new Resort Collection, go to the events page to get all the details!

…more feature how to

Between gas prices, AC, and customers preferring to be lying on a beach this is quite possibly a brutal time for retail. Ugh. Unless, of course, you have a boutique right in the center of Beachtown, USA…or you have a Smashing boutique! Customers can still go to the beach, save on gas, and buy from you! We see Summer Sale signs popping up everywhere…you can create your own summer promotion right in your store, here’s how: Login>Click Your Boutique Name> Click Promote > Click Run A Promo. Go check it out and give your customers a special treat!

Grab some friends/models and product, hit the beach for that wonderful light and snap away! Then be a peach and send your store to JulieDarling to critique. It will help you, and all the darling designers, to read a new perspective and get new ideas, then we all feel more comfortable to volunteer too…c’mon take one for the team! ;)

Change is in the air. We are redesigning Your House for Indie Fashion, and we don’t want you to be lost in your own home! SDv2 is looking mighty fine, and we hope for it to be up and running around the beginning of June. Be sure your store is current and up-to-date! Here is what to expect:
1) Shoppers will be able to shop a new juried section of the site -the best of the best- here are the criteria:
- Minimum of 10 items in the store
- Uploading new items quarterly
- High quality images
- Inventory kept current with available items
- Have a complete profile
Email us if you would like to be considered.

Other new features

2) Bye bye forums and hello Indie Fashion Event Directory. This new feature will make it much easier for you to upload your own indie events (and events in your area). Therefore Darlings everywhere will be creating a comprehensive list of indie fashion events happening across the country - all in one place.

3) Mini blogs!

Okay here is our favorite. Around the time of the launch or shortly after you will have access to a new mini blog right in your account! Very easily you will be able to keep everyone that stops by your store up to date. Darling shoppers and designers will be able to stop buy your store and see what is going on, strike up a convo with you, collaborate with you, and find out what you are up to next. Fabulous!

Photo Critiques

Typically we would would be giving you the next round of photo - how to - in this spot. But with all the change happening around Smashing Darling, we want to make sure you are aware of one already happening. Julie Darling has started regular Monday Photo Critiques, simply put, they are really great, and very important. If you haven’t read the first two yet, take a second and do so in the blog. It is great to be having conversations with you all, be sure to leave a comment. Suggest someone’s store to be critiqued next week (or volunteer your own) by emailing: julie[at]smashingdarling[dot]com. We promise to always be nice and offer ideas and suggestions that we genuinely think will help take your photography (and hopefully your sales!) to the next level.

Smashing Darling was built by designers, for designers. We truly built this community around the needs and wants of an independent clothing designer. Hopefully, with a little help we can get you out there selling your stuff so that it’s the most useful to you and what you have going on. Here are two quick and easy ways to connect your dots online:
1 - Grab a badge/widget out of your account and pop it right into your website, blog, myspace etc. Here is an example at whosiepie.blogspot, (scroll down on your right.) And if you don’t have commerce on your site at all, simply link to Smashing Darling right from your SHOP icon, as KRELwear does, nice ‘n easy!

2 - INVITE your people!

Does everyone on your mailing list know they can purchase from you at Smashing Darling? Let them know! Send them an invitation, it helps you and it introduces them to our community…and so we grow!

1-Go into your store account

2-click on Shout It Out

3-click Invite customers

Simply add in your email contacts (cut and past will be quickest!) and you are done. You can personalize the invite as well, even add a Promo Code…but we will save that lesson for next month!

Exposure

So we taught you a bit about prepping for a photo shoot in the past lessons. The next challenge is making sure that your camera interprets the light in the way that is closest to what your eye sees: this is called exposure. Some cameras may offer very little control over exposure (shooting in what is often called a “fully programmed” mode), but often cameras have a number of choices, usually called exposure modes. Once again, there’s no way around reading the manual here to get the most out of your camera. Check out what exposure modes your camera is capable of, and which matches your situation best.

(more..)

There you have it. As always, thanks for being here and SMASHing with us!

Community News and new darlings

Yay! It’s Spring, thank goodness! The days are getting longer which of course makes everyone happier. Soon the daffodils will start to pop their little yellow buds out of the ground to remind us to wake back up…in case we fell asleep over the long winter.

Yeah right, do designers ever really sleep? Even in your slumber I bet you are all still designing; those blasts of imagery that happen just as you are slowly starting to fall asleep. Some of the spring-like images on this page are designers new to Smashing Darling, and some are regulars, with some new spring lines, take a look.

This pic to the left is a new collaboration for spring. Fabulous - the Darling’s love to collaborate! Go take a look at Feen Clothing, a collaboration between PINaR ERIS and graphic designer/makeup artist, Melissa St. Giles.

Before you get back to work be sure to go see another Darling designer, DRES, and his interview over at HandbagDesigner101.com his work is truly amazing!

Have you all registered in the Smashing Darling Forums? Have you been over to the Forums at all?

Go investigate! You can post an event, find a designer to collaborate with, give us feedback, get support… We would love for all of you Darling designers to post your events, as well as events happening in your communities. Don’t be shy either, tell a friend or two, or all…they can register and post happenings too. This way we are all in the know, all of the time! Since we are all representing indie communities across the country, we have the ability to keep the masses in the loop, and shopping at indie events everywhere YOU tell them to! If we all chip in, it can become the place to see and be seen…

FotoFinesse Lesson #2-Lighting

Back again with more tips on making your digital photos look their best. Once you’ve gotten the resolution thing down (see Toolbox #1) it’s time to think about the thing that truly makes whatever you’re shooting look smashing…LIGHT, both how it falls on what you’re shooting, and how your camera sees it.

The first thing to consider is where your light is coming from. There’s no substitute for good, bright, lighting to show off every detail of your products. The first challenge may be getting around the little, tiny, light source that that most digital cameras have called the FLASH. The built-in flash on your camera can be absolute death to your shot…it produces an extremely harsh light that can blow out all details (we’ve all seen those “hot spots”), make harsh shadows, and create a very unflattering effect on your shots, especially close-ups and reflective or metallic items.

So get to know your camera … read the manual, and see if there is a way to turn off the built-in flash, or if your camera has a shooting mode that works without it. Click here to keep reading Darling lighting tips.

how to - SHOUT IT OUT

Play your part in the Smashing Darling community by loving your indie and shouting it out! It helps you and everyone in our community. Our first how to is about widgets, they are fun.

WHAT is a widget? you ask…

A widget is a little mini-application that you can put into your blog or web page to show off your goods! Your widget will automatically load daily beautiful photos of featured Smashing Darling designers, or of just your designs.

Where can I PUT a widget?

You can put it on any blog or web page that you own, and allows you to enter HTML code.

“Where do I FIND my widgets?

1. Log into your account.

2. Click to open your store.

3. Click the ‘Shout It Out!’ tab.

4. Click View all Badges & Widgets

5. Then you can configure your widget however you like: choose color, choose which items from your store or SmashingDarling.

6. Then simply cut and paste the HTML code wherever you want! Your website, blog, Myspace, Stylehive…it goes on and on!

When creating a photo of your products, it is often a good idea to set your camera at its highest quality setting (ie: the one that produces the largest file size.) This file will give you highest resolution your camera is capable of producing as well as the most flexibility in how you can use the image. The file can then be opened in any digital imaging software (such as Photoshop or your camera’s own editing software) and then adjusted as necessary.

For the purposes of SmashingDarling images, here’s a step-by-step of the best way to prepare quality images:

  • Set your camera to it’s highest quality setting

  • Create your photos.

  • Open your photos in a digital imaging program and crop as desired.

  • Adjust the output size to a minimum of 700 x 700 pixels, and the resolution to 72 ppi.

  • Make sure the file size is under 250k, and save as a JPEG, GIF, or PNG.

  • Upload your photos!

Photo Tips - FotoFinesse

If your photos don’t look good,

YOU don’t look good!

Lesson #1 is resolution, which in the context of digital photos is simply a measure of the output quality of an image (usually measured in pixels per inch - PPI.)

The key here is that it’s very easy to resize an image downward from a large, high-quality file. Images with large file size and higher resolution (usually 300ppi or greater) are best suited for print, while images with lower resolution (usually 72ppi) are suitable for web use. On the flip side, trying to create a larger image from a low quality file (which is usually referred to as “interpolating ” or “res-ing up”) almost always results in files that appear fuzzy, jagged, or “pixelated” looking. Definitely not what you want for capturing the beauty and detail of your products!

Okay, school is out for today!

Get out there and

Shout it Out:

INDIE ROCKS!

Feedback, Part 2

I was so excited about announcing our latest and greatest feature, FEEDBACK. I Left out one very cool element! When you leave feedback for a designer, if you have already purchased what you so covet from this designer on Smashing Darling, you have the power and the tools needed to show the world. We’ve made it sooooooooooooooooooooo easy too. It is as simple as unchecking a box. OMG, it IS unchecking a box. The whole world will get a glimpse as to why you love this designer so much. Now go find your favorite designer on Smashing Darling and leave them some feedback.

So close you can almost taste it!

Don’t you just love these close up shots! I mean, you feel like you can reach right out and feel what these things are made of!

I feel like I couldn’t even see this much detail in person! Doesn’t it just make you want to go out and buy these!

great photo for seeing detail from Mandala Jewels

and holy moly, you can see every texture in these earrings by Cynthia Jones!

and

Love the scale shown on the model!

All of Cynthia’s photos make it easy to purchase from her online and know what you are getting!

These jewelry designers have got it goin’ on with regards to the issue of up close and personal.

Check out this photo by Dina Varano

YUM! I just want to take a bite of that turquoise!

Who could resist buying that! Talk about the perfect color nugget hanging against perfectly tan skin!

Totally sexy!

Silver, turq, tan, and sand! Yeah baby!

Sorry, but I have to pimp my own brand here,

and I do have to say, close up shots lead to better sales! I was told I am on of the top selling stores on Smashing Darling!

I think women love that they can see the weave of my fabrics!

I have to say that the close ups are my favorites too from any designer because I really feel like there is no barrier between me and the product!

Check out the fabric close ups from MerGirl

You can actually see the sheerness of the fabric!

and in this one you can see the hairs coming right off the mohair, I feel one in my eye just from looking at it!

It is so simple too, If I can achieve this with my Nikon Coolpix anyone can.

I put it on the Macro setting and off I go!

Just had to add that, I know all the shopping fans want to know all of the top secret tricks!

Happy shopping!

Smashing Darling Tips…Connect the dots

Smashing Darling was built by a designer, for other designers. We truly built this community around the needs and wants of an independent clothing designer.

Hopefully, with a little help we can get you out there selling your stuff so that it’s the most useful to you and what you have going on. Here are just a few ways that we have found the site extremely useful to our designers.

You can integrate your own personal marketing with your Smashing Darling store by:

  • Link items in your own newsletters, blog mentions, print advertisements, etc. to your store in Smashing Darling, so that people are only a couple of clicks away from buying what you are showing them as new products
  • Use Smashing Darling as an extension of your own site - if you don’t have commerce on your own site take advantage of the fact that you can link straight to your store from images on your site, or send people straight to your store from your buy here section on your own website…that way you can get them while they are hot!
  • Feel free to put your smashing darling store address on your existing signage , business cards (or if you want to use the Smashing Darling business cards we created for you to use, just email us at trishandjulie@smashingdarling.com), etc. If you don’t have regular business hours, but have a good amount of pieces in your store…stick a sign up saying check out my smashing darling store…so even when you aren’t working, your customers could still be buying 24/7!
  • Use the invite feature to let your customer base get updates the second you upload new pieces. That way your company and products are always on their minds. You can even upload one thing a week and have weekly reminders to your customers that they need to stop by and get the newest pieces.

It’s all about connecting the dots!

Be SMASHING,

Trish and Julie
