Emerging Designer Spotlight

We wanted to share with the community the fashion spread that indie fashion designer Chelsea Erhart shared with us. We think is so great to see indies getting great press.

No Rules Fashion Editorial

See the whole editorial here.

So when Chelsea contacted us to share this photo shoot, we thought why not ask her a bit about how it all came to be.

Trish: How did you get this press? Was it a connection to someone or did someone stumble upon your work somewhere and seek you out?

Chelsea: These are great questions Trish, this spread has a pretty good story behind it!

Last summer I volunteered to work with the Portland Police Activity League as they were offering a fashion design camp. Rebecca Goldshmit was interning with UltraPDX.com, a blog about Portland culture, decided to do a photo shoot with the girls enrolled in the camp and to promote the camp. As I was volunteering to teach the girls, it only made sense to put some of my work into the shoot. You can see the spread here (http://www.ultrapdx.com/zero/2008/06/22/fine-day/).

A few months later, Rebecca decided to do another shoot with Minh Tran and contacted me to use my clothes again. Its pretty funny, they took these photos 10 months ago, and I didn’t see them until they were posted on the Ultra page last week!

Minh Tran and I have worked on a few projects together, he shot the spring collection that is up on Smashing right now. His website is http://www.minhternet.com/ and he is a fantastic person!

Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks Trish!
Chelsea

We love being able to post videos of our designers. We think video is a great way for designers to build their personal brands by letting people get a glimps into their lives, studios, philosophy, inspiration and what it is like to do a fashion show.

Sharing some link love

by trish on March 25, 2009

We thought today would be a good day to share some links with you to other blogs that have blogged about many of the designers here at Smashing Darling. It is always so good to read what others have to say. Click on the links we are posting here today, these are fun blogs that you may want to add to your morning hot beverage routine.

Kingdom of Style a blog from the UK wrote, Weird and Wonderful Tulle, a post about Papusza Couture.

Broke & Beautiful has a category of posts she calls Eye Candy & indie Genius, this week she wrote about Gina Michelle. Previous weeks have included Laura Dawson, Black Heart Bunny, M641, and Erika Hendrix. We know her on twitter as @MissElle, look her up and say hi.

Get Palmed, written by Sara from Helsinki Finland, beautifully describes Zsega’s colection.

Pr Couture recently wrote, Show Me The Pretty: Fashion PR with Madras 641. It is a good read and full of great PR tips for indie fashion designers. You can also find @pr_couture on twitter.

Clothes Coach, Kristen Ezell wrote Kaytee Papusza @ Williamsburg Fashion Weekend. We met Kristen at Digital Moda and then again later in the week at Kaytee’s fashion show.

Krelwear to go 3

We wanted to share some awesome pictures  for Karelle Levy (KRELwear)of her Krelwear-To-Go, an ongoing project offering quickie couture services for women, men, kids and pets. Modarling and myself, got to see Karelle in action at Expose in Bryant Park. Modarling actually participated and had a beautiful red tunic draped and designed on her. An assistant is always on hand at these events sewing all of the in the moment creations, hence the name Krel-To-Go. Fashion in realtime…who knew it could be so fun, and so great.

[The following is a guest post by Angie Jones, a freelance fashion writer]

A freezing night and a walk down a desolate, trash-strewn backstreet led to the fourth annual Williamsburg Fashion Weekend (WFW), held last Friday and Saturday.  Eight local designers showed off their latest collections in a drafty warehouse space called Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Unlike its orthodox great grandmother Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, WFW takes pride in promoting edgy designs by untraditional emerging artists.  And if it holds true to its claim as the bridge by which “Art and Fashion Meet,” then featured designer Kaytee of PapuszaCouture is the black cat who calls this bridge home.

Kaytee holds West Coast roots and is a fresh addition to the Brooklyn scene.  Her line is made up of unique designs which are handmade, one-of-a-kind compositions.  She regards their creation as an outlet for her admiration of the other worldly, outlandish and somewhat morbid.  Her Friday night exhibition offered a fleeting glimpse into her world.

A juxtaposition of delicate baroque charm and 1980’s Goth were prevalent as PapuszaCouture’s new collection, “Origami Pink,” was modeled by an alluring assemblage of femme fatales.  An array of eye catching dresses, gowns and separates where presented in strategic, billowy layers of satin and silk.  Some were accompanied by corsets and fishnets; others swelled with feathers or were affixed with faux taxidermy.  Each model put on an elaborate performance, evoking eerie pleasure and capturing the essence of the designer.  A mythological nymph, a bird in heat and a wind-up doll were just a few of the characters revealed through expressive choreography.  You’d be surprised at how feminine one can look while tonguing a skull.  And the unforgettable grand finale was a passionate waltz with a skeleton – while on stilts!

“The little girl from Seattle has made her mark,” declared organizer Arthur Arbit following the show.  The black cat beneath the bridge let out a fierce meow as she sat among her dead birdies, of which were not slain but, rather, came to rest in her domain.

Pinar Eris ‘Dark Romance’ Photo Shoot

by trish on December 13, 2008

Sharing this beautiful photo shoot from PINaR ERIS of her ‘Dark Romance’ collection. Love it. Reminds me of the exhibit Gothic: Dark Glamour currently at The Museum At FIT. If you get a chance, it is worth seeing.

Become a fan of PINaR ERIS on facebook….follow her on Twitter…and shop for her online. This is a great collection from a great designer….and bonus…she is totally accessible. She is a great example of how a fashion designer can take advantage of marketing web 2.0 style in the social media arena.

Wanted to share Juliedarling’s guest pot she did for Brea Grant’s Blog. I am looking forward to seeing more. I love that the highlight on indie design!

here is an excerpt from Juliedarling’s guest post:

Hi! juliedarling here to interrupt your regularly scheduled Brea list (~ insert loud high pitched noise~)

OK, now that I’ve got your attention, Brea has asked me to guest post today with a juliedarling list. Why a juliedarling list you ask, and who is juliedarling anyway? I’m the co-founder of www.smashingdarling.com, a site where you can find over 450 of the hottest indie fashion designers you’ve never seen. It’s my job to rock indie fashion, find hot new designers, and keep people like you looking smashing … and I love doing just that.

You can read the rest of the post and see all of the highlighted designers in Brea Grant’s Blog.
