Saving you from the world of copy-cat design, the Philadelphia Design Initiative, a new local-design repping org created by Melanie Gershman and Scott Yesner, is hosting a fashion show called Fresh and Local. …it was an intimate show that felt worlds away from the Fashion Week crazy. Not that it wasn’t a professional, amazing-looking show, but it felt private and special in a way that the FW tents are not.

See the full schedule and buy tickets at the Grand Opening website (also the darling hosts of the occasion). Don’t forget you can shop those same runway looks in that very space. When there isn’t a runway event the space morphs into a pop-up boutique as well. Most excellent we think! See dates and times below. How about one of these for every city? Sounds good to us…

Gallery Hours: Tuesday–Saturday 11 AM–6 PM

“Principals of Design: Pratt Fashion Alumni,” an exhibition of haute couture, womenswear, menswear, costume, and shoe and accessory designs by 21 alumni from Pratt’s Department of Fashion Design. The exhibition will take place at 144 West 14th Street, Second Floor, from September 9 through October 9, 2011, and will highlight the diversity, influence, and talent of professional designers who began their careers with a Pratt education. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is guest-curated by Sarah Scaturro, a textile conservator at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and adjunct instructor at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), with Pratt Adjunct Assistant Professor Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman serving as the Pratt faculty advisor.

We are thrilled to see that local NYC designers have a home at Grand Opening during fashion week. Kicking off on September 7th and running straight through to October 2nd, Grand Opening transforms into LES Runway – a convertible runway/pop-up boutique for local independent designers. We love it! Tickets are on sale now, yes… open to the general public, for three shows a night Thurs-Sat throughout the entire month. Tickets are only $12, drink included – most excellent. See you there darlings!

LES Runway @ Grand Opening

Part fashion showcase, part pop-up shop, LES Runway brings the runway to the downtown scene. It is an opportunity for emerging, local fashion designers to present their work on the catwalk, display the same creations in a pop-up store and interact with the general public in a truly creative and unique fashion setting. Grand Opening will reinvent itself by day as a boutique storefront where patrons will have the chance to purchase select items straight off the runway and by night as the most intimate, interactive runway ever to hit New York.

Hosted by the newly renovated Hotel Phoenix and Chambers, San Francisco Fashion Awards 4th Annual Award Ceremony and Fashion Show will honor relevant talents that have contributed innovation and social change through the ongoing fashion evolution of Northern California.

The afternoon will begin with a cocktail cash bar and a delectable menu followed by an award ceremony, fashion show, and wrap with a party by the pool.

Oh dear… prepare for us to get all giddy on you again! We can’t help it, ’tis just too good to see independent designers on the runway across the country, and their designs for sale right here on Smashing Darling. To us it is just a beautiful thing! Darling Avni is on the left coast this week as part of the Emerging Designers evening of San Fransisco Fashion Week. Kudos to Owen Geronimo and SFFAMA for these events and all they are doing to bring their local independent fashion community together – we think you rock.
