What’s Going On
First and foremost, please take a quick moment and answer our two question mini survey – we want to know what you want to find here at Smashing Darling!

If you are in NYC, you know summer is going on – and it is steamy. Recognition for independent fashion seems to be picking up a bit of steam too. We were very happy to see indie fashion in the spotlight recently. Christina Binkley, Wall Street Journal, took a few minutes to chat with Darling Co-Founder, Trish Ginter, among others…please take a moment and read how independent fashion is gaining clout.

Did you used to sew your own clothes? Did your mom? Whether you are just starting out or want to start again, you can find inspiration at BurdaStyle. Read about us in their blog, and then go explore!

New Clout for Indie Fashion
Somebody pinch us. Did we really just read this quote below in the Wall Street Journal?
Indie designers offer pieces that not everyone has, allowing consumers to create their own style. I’ve noticed that the clothes and jewelry of mine that garner the most compliments are those that come from indie designers. They’re not the same old trendy looks.
Please go read the article, in support of you and your products, your story. Let out a cheer, and then go spread the word! Let everyone know they should tune to our channel, the independent channel. It’s darling.

Think Outside the Box
Is the the road less traveled your road to success as an independent designer? Very likely. We love seeing the ways designers, and those that support them, get creative in order to make their passion a reality.
Catwalk Genius was born about the same time we were, so it’s grand to see innovative ways to build funding for indie designers on the other side of the pond.
Kickstarter is a funding platform we want to remind you about. Here is a great intro from Macala at FashionablyMarketing.Me, and a favorite project from last year by Brooklyn designer Tara St. James. Think you’re ready to launch your own Kickstarter project? If so, send it our way!

In Your Experience…
This month began with the news of GenArt closing it’s doors after 16 years supporting emerging artists across the country: fashion, film, music. While this was sad news for so many, the news left us with lots of questions: What will replace it? How can indie artists come together to support each other in a way that is financially viable today?

It was also unsettling to read that many designers had lost money in the fallout, including Kate Boggiano who has a boutique here at Smashing Darling. Have you ever lost money to a production company? Is there a solution to situations like this? How do you protect yourself? Please comment or send us an email (trishandjulie@smashingdarling.com) if you have advice for fellow designers.

While you are there, catch a glimpse of PapuszaCouture in this interview with their Director of Photography, Mikey Pozarik.

Smashing Kudos and tidbits
We tend to think of indie fashion as the invisible slip under the mass-marketed-uniform of the fashion industry. Maybe that is a bit dramatic … Regardless, we just want you all to find the joy in being your unique self. Whether you need a video to show you or not…indie designers are here to help you do just that. Show off your personal style!

The State of Independent Fashion
Fashion designers held about 22,700 jobs in 2008. About 31 percent of fashion designers worked for apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers; and 13 percent worked for apparel manufacturers. Many others were self employed. Little or no change in employment is projected.**

More and more fashion programs (often without a small business focus) + inspired students + fewer jobs = a large community of independent designers out there on their own. We want to help. What do you need help with most? Please drop us an email or comment and let us know.

Build Community
In case you missed it, we added location to your boutique (read more). When we complete the search by area function, consumers will be able to type in a location and see the designers near by, and if you like, you can connect with your local Darlings!
Just as a reminder, you can help us build our community by sending us fashion events happening near you, or local boutiques supporting independent fashion. If you have had a good or bad experience with a show or event we want to hear about it. Sharing your experience can help another designer down the road.
