SMASH UP VI – Tears of Cerberus

by Mo on November 8, 2007

Pre-print, and in process

via cameraphone

with Mickey at RISD,

and post-print on Julie!

SMASH UP VI on sale now in the Student SMASH UP Store.

I love this shirt, I just want to put it on and go cause a ruckus. Our November SMASH UP student likes to draw, “antique, cliche monsters (like Cerberus) in a slightly less traditional, more tacky manner.” I like to think this three-headed dog is guarding and supporting all of our indie designers, and when you wear this rockin’ tee, you are too.

SPEED, is one of Michaela Zacchilli’s self-proclaimed, major selling points as a human being. Michaela, a.k.a Mickey, lives in Providence, RI and is a senior Printmaking major at Rhode Island School of Design. She draws comics and makes prints, for great justice, see more of her work on her website: http://michaelacolette.com.

Check it out – the barcode is on the body of the big dog, and I am pretty sure that is the dog’s tongue that is sending you to smashingdarling.com? I guess only Mickey can tell us! If it is up to me, I would say this puppy is giving you a smashing SMOOCH!

TEXTURE: For this one-size ¾ sleeve Alternative Apparel baseball tee (50% cotton, 50% poly light knit gauze) Mickey used a rainbow roll and then reprinted the same image in white on top, slightly offset, to spice things up. And spice things up she did, I love the slight scoop neck, don’t you all think Julie should model all of our girlie SMASH UP’s ?!

The student SMASH UP is an ongoing collaborative project between Smashing Darling and printmaking students from all over, you can find this limited edition SMASH UP and the past five in the Smashing Darling Student SMASH UP store.

Instead of arriving on the 10th of every month, we will deliver these to you the first Thursday of every month. In case you are new to this SMASHing routine, click on Subscribe right in the store and everytime we post a new student piece it will be delivered right to your email! You can also recommend a SMASH UP to a friend, leave Feedback, and click on the store Profile to learn more details about our project.

Go buy one now for you and cause your own ruckus; buy one for your gals too and all of you go cause a ruckus together, after all we could all use a little more power now and again! Get your groove on and give out sloppy smashingdarling kisses – share the indie love!

Have a great day ~ the Darling’s

SMASH UP V – Cloak and Dagger

by Mo on October 10, 2007

Our friend Andrew

in action

printing SMASH UP

at Peregrine Press, Portland, Maine

SMASH UP V on sale now

If you ask printmaker, student, coach, and mixologist Andrew Jaspersohn, where the idea for SMASH UP V - Cloak and Dagger – came from his response may go something like this:

“I was raised in the mountains of Vermont by wolves obsessed with James Bond, who, after much pleading, finally taught me the art of Arnis, Filipino knife and stick fighting…”

Wait, did he mention that before or after those Bond-like Bijou Cocktails he whipped up for my volunteer photographer and I? Hmmm, I can’t remember….Well, okay, maybe he would just tell you that he is pretty much a James Bond (and maybe a comic superhero) geek, and this shirt may just be the first of a series of knife-fighters soon to be purchased in his own store right here on Smashing Darling. I can’t wait, because as you can see, this shirt ROCKS for all you boys and girls out there. It is super soft (cotton-poly-rayon blend) and the wide waistband and matching sleeve hem make it unisexily perfect. Buy one for you and all of your friends, and then celebrate. If with a cocktail, see recipe at the bottom…oh yeah, did I fail to mention he makes his own bitters too?

Andrew started printing in college at Colby in Maine, apprenticed for a year at Vermont Studio Center in his hometown of Johnson, Vermont. He moved back to Maine a few years ago and was on the waiting list for Peregrine Press for a year and a half before being accepted. Now, when he isn’t working towards his Art Education certification at MECA, he can be found whipping up cocktails at BarLola, or printing away custom hoodies for friends at Peregrine Press.

You noticed that the design is printed on the lower-right, back corner of the shirt, right? If not you just aren’t paying attention! Regardless, you should really click here and check out the slideshow of Andrew’s print session at our Smashing Darling Flickr page. We had a lot of fun, and I was kidding, no cocktails were enjoyed during this shoot, just coffee…coffee a la bijou. While you are there, join our group and send us some pics of your indie influence, inspiration, or just your favorite indie style. Come play with us!

The bar code and logo makes it official, our SMASH UP V is here, only 48 limited editon pieces made, as always, and ready for the buying frenzy in our Smashing Darling store. Go buy yours today, these babies won’t last long!

Stay tuned for SMASH UP VI November 10th, and until then if you meet any student printmakers, send then my way, email mo@smashingdarling.com!

Bijou Cocktail

1 1/2 oz gin

1/2 oz green chartreuse

1/2 oz sweet vermouth

1 dash Andrew’s orange bitters

Student Smash Up lV, Monster Smash

by trish on September 10, 2007

Boys this one is for you! Smash Up IV is here and it is fabulous. Go to the Smashing Darling store and buy yours today! Then channel your inner monster, put on your skivvies and run around like a madman! The September SMASH UP collaboration is for the boys, technically, but hey why can’t us gals kick it is in these? Girls these make great hang out shorts for you too! I don’t know if it was all the mod talk last week or just the new Monster SMASH UP images, but I can’t stop thinking of The Munsters, The Addams Family, and, of course the Monster Mash… oh yes, I am going there, c’mon don’t you need a little mash for your Monday morning?

He did the mash
He did the monster mash
The monster mash
It was a graveyard smash
He did the mash
It caught on in a flash
He did the mash
He did the monster mash

Remember these smokin’ undies from the July SMASH UP? We asked their creator, Meg, to think of the boys so you and yours could be smashing together! Or, if there is no other boy-half in your life, (because boys can really be monsters sometimes…) how cute would these be under that mod mini-skirt in your closet that you never wear? Just be careful who you show your inner monster layer to!

These cotton undies are the ultimate in comfort by American Apparel.  There are only 48 of these monsters…so buy yours today. Meg Turner lives in Providence, Rhode Island and is a printmaker, bike-builder and explorer of buildings. She is a senior studying Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design, and recently started her own small editioning studio – Messmate Prints, for more information about editions, e-mail Messmateprints@gmail.com. Thanks Meg!

Students, send us your designs!

We are having a blast

smashing

it

up

with

you.

Student Smash Up III Up Up and Away

by trish on August 10, 2007

The Smashing Darling cheer goes something like this: Collaborate, Collaborate, Collaborate! Three cheers for SMASH UP III – Up, Up and Away. All of us darlings remember how awestruck we were as baby darlings, and still today, when we spotted a hot air balloon peacefully lifting high above the clouds. We agree we must have been jealous of that bright, beautiful fabric – filled with delicious air – and it’s ability to be free and fly high up into the sky.

Morgan Calderini, recent RISD grad, printmaker, hot air balloonist, and our August SMASH UP collaborator, obviously feels the same way. As a child a balloon landed in her front yard and since then she has always dreamed of flying. You never know when or where inspiration is going to arrive! She designed and built her own hot air balloon in January and is currently in the process of learning how to fly it. Her current studio work draws inspiration from her interest in flight. So now she has built these sweet baby onesies for your special pumpkin who is just feeling inspired to crawl, walk, or jump right out of their crib and fly…okay, or maybe even just to drool!

Morgan used a rainbow roll to create many colors using one screen, thus no two will be exactly alike, and don’t forget all the SMASH UP items are limited edition.

I love the bar code and smashing writing right down by the snaps! This onesie definitely makes a great gift for all those droolers and crawlers in your life, and you could even wrap it up and tie it right to the end of a balloon! Or you could be as crafty as Morgan and make your own mini hot air balloon and put the onesie in the basket!

Whatever you do, be smashing and SHOP INDEPENDENT!

The student SMASH UP is an ongoing collaborative project between Smashing Darling and printmaking students from all over, so if you know a student who may be interested have them email mo@smashingdarling.com to find out all the details.

Did you miss the first two SMASH UP’s? Just go to the Smashing Darling store and click Subscribe (at the top right hand of the page) and each collaboration will be sent right to your email, it doesn’t get any easier than that!

SMASH UP IV coming September 10th!

Up, up and away, my beautiful, my beautiful balloon! For we can fly. We can fly!

Smash Up l

by trish on June 10, 2007

Smashing Darling has done it’s first collaboration! WOW! We thought it would be really cool to work with the creativity of the future, so we decided to start smashing up with students. We posted a wanted: Students ad on the RISD intranet and Wha – LA, Here it is!

Actually this one is really special, not only is it the first collaboration with a student for us, the student that answered us decided to collaborate with another student! I think it is always amazing to see what happens when you smash together 2 creative forces! You never know what will happen!

Clara and Breanne became BFFs in 2006 while in graduate school at the Rhode Island School of Design. Their ongoing collaboration is a combination of their respective aesthetics using hand drawn and vector based imagery. Currently Breanne is working towards an MFA in printmaking and Clara graduated in 2007 with an MFA in graphic design.

So we want to thank Clara and Breanne!

Congrats go out to Clara she graduated during this project!

So go snag one of these Red Hot Tanks before they are gone. There is a limited #, 36 to be exact, well 35 after I get mine! A mere 36 people in the whole world will be able to say they have the first Smashing Darling Smash Up Tank!

Don’t forget to check out the back, It has our signature Bar Code, only those in the Know, will KNOW! Inside secrets, How cool is that!

The next smash up/collaboration will be available for sale on July 10th.

if you know any students that would like to participate tell them to contact us.
