Sustainable Fashion for a Living World

Join Rogan Gregory and Scott Hahn, co–founders of Loomstate, Julie Gilhart, Senior Vice President and fashion director of Barneys New York, and Leslie Hoffman, executive director of Earth Pledge in conversation with Sarah Scaturro, textile conservator, curator and author, on the importance and future of sustainable fashion.

This program is presented as part of the exhibition, Design for a Living World, which will be open for a private viewing before the program from 5:30 – 6:30pm

Casting Call for all Emerging Designers

Dream Cartel, a brand new fashion PR firm based out of Los Angeles, is holding an online casting call for all fashion designers looking for representation. Dream Cartel will provide media relations, social media branding, and buzz marketing to 3 designers that will be chosen. One lucky winner out of those 3 will receive free PR services for 6 months — yep, completely gratis!

If you’re interested, you will need to submit your information including your name, contact number, email, and a link to your online portfolio to casting@dreamcartel.com. A short digital video telling us why you should be picked wouldn’t hurt either! Deadline for entries is Friday, May 15th, 2009. Good luck!

This is a look at WAYNE, by designer Wayne D. Lee, one of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation 2008 winners.

We want to say congratulations to the 2009 winners of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award. We know how hard it is to make it in this business. This is a great opportunity Ecco Domani is providing to emerging fashion designers every year. Each winner will receive $25,000 to use towards showing their collection during this years NY Fashion Week.

The winners are, in the women’s design category, Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs of Cushnie et Ochs, Lyn Devon, Matthew Ames and Alexa Adams and Flora Gill of Ohne Titel. Corpus, designed by Jerrod Cornish and Keith Richardson won in the men’s design category. Monique Pean’s global-inspired sustainable jewelry won in the accessories category, and a new award for sustainable design was awarded to Bodkin Brooklyn, designed by Samantha Pleet and Eviana Hartman, the founding columnist of The Washington Post’s EcoWise column and former fashion features editor at Nylon.

Ecco Domani means “here’s tomorrow,” and we look toward the future for both our wines and the world around us. In support of innovation in the fashion industry, the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation (EDFF) is dedicated to supporting the careers of aspiring fashion designers. Each year, the EDFF awards a $25,000 grant to seven fashion designers to present a runway show at New York Fashion Week. Hey there darlings! We hope this news-blast finds you in a celebratory mood as you prepare for your-holiday-of-choice this season. We have many things to be joyful about…maybe we forgot to tell you about a new Darling fan? Brea Grant from the NBC show Heroes added us to her list, check it out -and be sure to check out Julie’s picks
while you are there! This Angela Johnson dress to the right would sure look adorable on Brea…hmmm. Keep your eyes peeled, you never know whose dress she’ll stroll down the red carpet in next. Maybe, just maybe, it will come right off the Smashing Darling pages.

Strolling through the dark basement labyrinth at FIT yesterday, we couldn’t help but think of the gorgeous and darkly romantic creations of darling Papusza Couture, (left).

Wow. A new year on the way. 2009, can you believe it? Seems like just yesterday the first Darling newsletter was sent out.
