Featured Independent Designer Of The Week: Avni

by trish on November 14, 2011

Anvi featured independent fashion designer

Avni currently designs her line in Cambridge, MA.

Born and raised in India, Avni’s designer, Avni Trivedi, spent her formative years immersed in the rich history, vibrant fashion, and beautiful art of Indian culture. From a young age, the crafts of local artisans fascinated Trivedi, who fell in love with the handmade fabrics she scouted out at artisan fairs in the villages of Gujarat. As she learned commerce from her grandfather, who headed a textile research unit, andingenuity from her mother, a successful entrepreneur in India’s fashion industry, the young Trivedi began designing clothes from local handmade fabrics as a hobby. … read more

Hey Darlings, we know it’s a crazy time of year, so we offer you some inspiration. Read on below and get to know independent designer David Chum, and his line Selah D’0r a little bit better. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for us in 2011.

Selah D’or (sell-lah door) is a play on the phrase “cellar door,” a combination of words in the English language once characterized by J.R.R. Tolkien to have an especially beautiful sound. It loosely translates to forever light or true in Hebrew.

Darlings: We know you are a self- taught designer, how did you get into fashion? When did you start your own line: Selah D’or?
David: Fashion has always been there: Disney-inspired fashion drawings as a child, costume design in high school drama. I’m not professionally trained. I actually went to school for a Fine Arts degree. Even then I would incorporate hand-made costumes and jewelry into my artwork. After I graduated I exhibited all over and finally got to a point where I just found myself bored, tired, and unmotivated with my artwork. I’ve always toyed with the idea of starting my own line. It was in 2008 when I finally decided it was time to move on, bought some pattern drafting textbooks and started to teach myself how to cut, drape, and draft. I launched Selah D’or with my Fall/Winter 2009 collection.

Darlings: What inspires your designs?
David: The work is primarily the same from season to season, the specifics just change according to where my interests are at the time. Some collections have very specific inspirations: long lists of retro periods, plants and animals, mythology, movies, etc. Sometimes I just design according to an idea or feeling I want to convey. Regardless of all of this, each design is always built off of the body. The female form and it’s interaction and harmony with the materials is always the basis.

My woman, the Selah D’or woman, isn’t a creature of habit. Her only habit is to look beautiful. Each season/collection is an expression of a different facet of her femininity. She’s always relevant. She’s flashy, but not gaudy. She’s edgy, but she’s elegant. She’s sexy, but not vulgar. She’s the sum of opposites….so many opposites. Her style, her beauty and grace exist in the gray area between these opposites…between this tension. She is the woman all eyes turn to when she walks into a room. It’s very powerful to have that. Beauty is power.

Darlings:: If your studio walls could talk what would they say?
David: David works too much. He puts his sweat, blood, and tears into this, literally. He works in chaos and we wish he would organize and clean up already.

Darlings:: To this point what is the most important lesson you have learned that helps you maintain your business and collection?

David: Do whatever it takes. Keep on going. Even when you feel like you just can’t go anymore. It’s also okay to say “No.” Not every opportunity presented to you is a good fit for your business, for your brand. It’s important to recognize and maintain your label’s identity. Also, it’s good to always be prepared for the unexpected, whether that unexpected thing is negative or positive.

IMG_6321-Edit-2

Darlings: How do you market yourself and your label?
David: Word of mouth is a powerful thing. When I first launched I participated in so many random runway shows. It really got the buzz going. The internet and social media is also an amazing, and free, tool.

Darlings: Does your community feel like a supportive locale for emerging designers?
David: Boston has a small, but vibrant fashion scene. It is very supportive of all of it’s emerging designers, but I feel it’s still trying to find it’s way and place in the industry. In the past the focus wasn’t on the business side of fashion. Shows and events usually served as entertainment and ego candy. Whereas in New York, your show is an investment in your business. It’s there to market your new work to the retailers and press. There’s a shift happening right now where the community is realizing that we are businesses and our goal is to thrive.

Darlings: Do you have any current fashion obsessions?
David: Victorian hair mourning jewelry. They used to take the hair of the deceased and create pins and pendants. These were meant for the mourner to wear.  Sometimes the hair is braided and manipulated into intricate designs. I think they’re so beautiful and really fascinating. I don’t own any, yet, but plan on starting a collection.

Darlings: Any upcoming events you are getting ready for? Fill us in!
David: I’m just getting my AW11 collection together for a show this March. I’ll also be showing this collection at one of Marilyn Riseman’s private luncheons, most likely a non-traditional format. It’s difficult to produce a quality runway show that doesn’t end up looking like a cheap imitation of New York’s shows when you’re working with a small budget.

Our Editor’s Picks have taken a bit of a break around here, but when we saw Kristen D’Amour posting about indie fashion landing in the WSJ we were inspired to bring them back. Read her blog description below and you’ll understand why we felt an instant bond. If you are blogging/writing/printing about indie fashion and want to play, do be in touch, or send us a heads up on your fave blog about indie fashion. (Comment below or email: mo@smashingdarling.com)

there is more to style and shopping than what you find in the mall.  there are so many independent clothing designers whose heart and passion are in creating clothes.  they have a unique point of view in their designs and often times hand make the stylish clothes and accessories.  the clothing menu is dedicated to bringing awareness to indie fashion designers and giving people an option outside of what is offered in the mall, while providing the latest in fashion trends and tips.

My mantra for fashion is: don’t be afraid to mix and match – colors, styles, patterns.  I love discovering new combinations either on other people or in my own wardrobe. (Which is usually discovered by accident, when I’m bored by the clothes I have and start mixing pieces together).  So this outfit, Agency Day, is an outfit I would love to wear to work.  The best thing about it though is that every piece you see here was made by these independent designers listed below.

agency day

MarMaFashions: I like the vintage-inspired touches of this cropped jacket, like the rose pin at the collar.
Love, Anjia: This tunic has an interesting print that adds texture to this outfit, but is also not overpowering.
Asuyeta: Made by one of my favorite indie designers. I like the unique color of the skirt that is actually a really cool print when you look at it closely.
Mi Mo Handbags: I have a weakness for dark brown bags.  I like that this one looks like its worn-in, but is actually new Italian leather.
Julie Seidell Jewelry: It’s classic with its Swarovski Pearls and silver chain, but is unique and modern at the same time.
Anne Maa Designs: This ring is just cool. It reminds me of my days going to the Museum of Science as a child – good memories!

Catalina’s career path portrays an artist, jewelry designer and entrepreneur whose vision, sense of style and attention to details will undoubtedly keep her in the vanguard of American jewelry design. Her singular expression is clearly influenced by her Latin roots and Boston’s progressive women’s style, an interesting mix of city chick, joyful and heritage. Catalina De La Torre believes in combining fashion with artistry and craftsmanship.

Trish: How did you get into jewelry design?
Catalina: When I moved to Boston, I’d love to go out and do ” people watching” Bostonian women are interesting, are a different mix , fashionable still conservative, in other words ” Urban chic”. Yet, a lot of the accessories were missing, things you see in NY or Europe. So, I started thinking about trendy yet classic accessories. This helped me a lot and I have always been into art.

Trish: When did you start your own line of jewelry?
Catalina: It was winter of 2004, I started designing small pieces with wire and semi-precious stones, then I ventured and went to a couple stores and they loved my pieces. They encouraged me, I left my job and started a full time business pursue.

Trish: Where did you study your craft?
Catalina: I went to Massart for jewelry classes, then I have been attending different institutions for metal smith classes and seminars, schools such as Metalwerx, Escola Masana Barcelona spain.

Trish: Where do you turn for inspiration for your designs?
Catalina: Bold and colorful. I like to mix metal and colors. I think the combinations are endless. Then I look into nature, urban women, fashion trends, I just let my imagination led me, keeping a fresh modern interpretation.

Trish: What fashion trends, if any, are influencing your jewelry?
Catalina: European fashion is a big influence, but then Boston Women and style help me shape my final jewels.

Trish: What does your average day entail?
Catalina: Well, I will say, in the mornings I returned phone call, order supplies/materials, then design, production, and filling orders, and by the end of each week I’m doing some paper work. When I’m getting close to one of the tradeshows, I just design and developed the new pieces for the next season.
Always during my day, I’m looking for new costumers, new prospects that will help my business grow.

Trish: Do you have a mantra that that gets you through the day?
Catalina: Is my company, I want to succeed, and I want to be recognized and to be part of every trendy women.

Trish: Do you ever get back to Colombia?
Catalina: Yes, I go once a year, sometimes more, One of my outsourcing companies is there.

Trish: How would you describe your personal style?
Catalina: I will say, ” Urban Chic”, I try to stick to well made basics that can take me anywhere, that includes jeans, boots with heels, and the accessories give you an easy way to incorporate trends with out becoming obsessed with them

Trish: And who or what influences that style?
Catalina: I will say the trend and the season ( winter, spring, summer or fall).

Trish: What is your fashion obsession of the moment?
Catalina: Handbags, I just love them, since I have the bussines I feel my traditional handbag is not enough and it hasn’t enough room for all my things, I’m always looking for a new trendy , colorful and comfortable handbag.
