What’s Going On
Maybe Fall fashion is hitting NYC this week, but the rest of us are ready to shop for, and welcome, Spring! The hopeful colors of spring are popping up all around Smashing Darling as designers load up their boutiques with new inspiration. Mainstream fashion may be planning for 2010, but around these darling pages you can find one-of-a-kind clothing and accessories hot off the pattern table last week. We think that rocks. We hope you do too. Online or off, we think this Wall Street Journal article states it best:
…The clothes are exclusive, and the designers often offer alterations and special orders — as well as the pleasure of personal interaction with them.

Coming as soon as, oh -tomorrow!- New York Fashion week craziness! The darlings will be contributing from the outskirts making sure that the indie fashion scene is well, um…seen, and the voice heard. Fashion week now extends well beyond the tents especially for indie/emerging designers, and we will be there blogging, tweeting, and facebooking as much as we possibly can. Stay tuned to the Smashing Blog as well as Inside the Tents.

The Darlings end that run with a little ‘ole birthday, that’s right – ours! In our honor pop open a little pink bubbly, if you like, on the 20th of February when we officially become toddlers – we are TWO!

I love clothes and I love Smashing Darling. Supporting indie designers is the best way to give a gift this holiday season. And not just Christmas. As my friends know, no one receives a gift for me until after New Year’s and so this year, I’m embracing it. I am only giving “Happy 2009″ gifts or perhaps even, “Congrats on all you’ve accomplished in 2008″ gifts. Possibly even, “Don’t worry – this year will be better” gifts. Regardless, people appreciate gifts, no matter how late they are.

Picking just a few things was very hard so I chose one item and paired other items with it. This is often the way I create an outfit. I’ll have one handbag or one necklace and create the outfit based on an accessory instead of adding accessories to finish an outfit off. I feel like I’m playing dress up already….
I started with the gorgeous Flowers in the Dark earrings by Fancy Footwork.
I love dark earrings because they contrast with my hair and I feel like they go with anything. I am also a huge fan of vintage so these earrings caught my eye right away. These earrings really make a statement for me and I felt like I could match lots of stuff with them- so I did.

The 50’s Black Swing Dress by hello, fabulous is perfect for both dressing up or dressing down. Because everything is dark, you could pair a cute pair of bright shoes or a bright handbag. I thought the Anna purse would match the dress and the earrings perfectly for a nice night out.

When I’m not feeling girly and vintage-y, I’m probably wearing a cool tank top. The Anouk tank is exactly what I like to wearing on a day-to-day basis with a cute pair of jeans and, of course, cute earrings. I also picked out the BrooklynSoul Flutter Bracelet for this outfit just because it was so damn cute. Both are very affordable and created by awesome indie designers – what more could you ask for?

The next item is for all my girls with a lot of vintage dresses. If you’re like me, you buy the dress and then never wear it because you don’t own the right undergarments. The Mergirl Vixen Slip could fix that problem
right away. (By the way, this is the perfect gift for any vintage-loving lady in your life. Hint, hint.)

Everything in the Lara Miller collection is gold. For this particular outfit creation, I went with the Erin Miller dress It’s like a million dresses in one and it looks completely classy. Perfect for multiple occasions and no one will no you are wearing the same dress, you sneaky thing. Plus, you could pair it up with any jewelry.

I love this Erika Hendrix tunic. It’s so rock-n-roll and there’s so much you could pair it with especially a long necklace like the one from RockLove Jewelry. Both items could be such a fun outfit. Pair them up with the original black earrings to look very awesome.

Lastly, I wanted to include something crazy sexy and I think the BOAZ Silk Tuxedo Dress just screams sex appeal Perfect for a night out. I picked the Go Robot! Toronto Bangles to go with it so there was a splash of color. – Brea Grant

Wanted to share Juliedarling’s guest pot she did for Brea Grant’s Blog. I am looking forward to seeing more. I love that the highlight on indie design!

here is an excerpt from Juliedarling’s guest post:

Hi! juliedarling here to interrupt your regularly scheduled Brea list (~ insert loud high pitched noise~)

OK, now that I’ve got your attention, Brea has asked me to guest post today with a juliedarling list. Why a juliedarling list you ask, and who is juliedarling anyway? I’m the co-founder of www.smashingdarling.com, a site where you can find over 450 of the hottest indie fashion designers you’ve never seen. It’s my job to rock indie fashion, find hot new designers, and keep people like you looking smashing … and I love doing just that.

You can read the rest of the post and see all of the highlighted designers in Brea Grant’s Blog.
