Disco Doll Dress by Allison Leigh

Vintage glitter knit fabric off-the-shoulder dress. Tie at the bottom, shoulder strap joined by metal curved “barbell” pieces in pewter (looks like tarnish-y silver ). Sexy and funky all rolled into one! Runs small. Dry Clean only.

About the designer:

Allison has always been intrigued by fashion; starting out as an astute fondness for playing dress-up. Later, it became a source of rebellion…she didn’t want, under any circumstances, to adopt the conservative, cloned styles that were worn by her peers in the small midwestern town in which she was raised. At age fourteen, Allison’s mother enrolled her in a sewing class, and she quickly discovered her ability to visualize an outfit, then create it with her own two hands. Never one to want to blend in with everybody else, she fell in love with the idea of being able to make and wear a garment that nobody else on the planet possesed….the ultimate in individuality and self-expression. Allison  attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where, in 1993, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Clothing and Textiles. From then until late 2004, she lived in Chicago, IL where she freelanced in apparel design, selling her pieces in local boutiques, and participating in runway shows and other fashion events.    Allison moved to Phoenix, AZ  in fall of 2004, en route to California, and stayed until summer of 2008, enjoying being a part of the emerging fashion scene in the area.  Now  a  resident of San Francisco, she will be working hard to get ala established as a fashion voice in the big city.   allison leigh apparel was officially started in 2006 and can best be described as young, flirty, fresh,  and a little ‘toungue-in-chic,’ so to speak…..

In The Chic Boutique Today, Go Robot Rings

by trish on September 4, 2009

item-60558-49cda2f0ef330-m
Musselburgh ring

Designed for Earth Day, these sculptural rings are drastically re-purposed from discarded golf clubs. They are made from laminated layers of maple and catch the light most handsomely. Each one is uniquely hand-shaped with highly exaggerated angles, then sanded smooth and oiled. Some may include bits of brass screws . They can be made in women’s and men’s sizes. The rings are wide so you should order yours a quarter to a half size over your ring size. If you don’t see your size, email me for availability and time.

Shop Go Robot’s full jewelry and accessory line here.

About the designer:

My name is Stuart Breidenstein. I created this store as an outlet for one-of a kind and small runs of my newest jewelry. I make each piece by hand, (with the help of some robot pals) and I pay very close attention to detail. I like working with sterling silver and other metals, as well as wood and recycled/re-purposed stuff, but what I really get excited about is exothermic polymerization!  I constantly try to innovate and invent processes so that my jewelry stays fresh and is always on the cutting edge. Here’s a website where you can view archives of older pieces:

SMASH UP XV – Track Bike

by Mo on August 7, 2008

On Sale Now!

Are gas prices finally motivating you to commute another way? Especially this time of year while the sun is shining and the snow is not flying. This month’s Student SMASH UP can either remind you to commute another way OR help you suggest it to the world; better yet, buy one for someone who drives their car around the block to the coffee shop, grocery store, post office etc.

This month we stick around the Pacific Northwest with a tee for the guy’s -and maybe the gals?- from Nathan Coyne out in Portland, Oregon. Nathan is a junior at Portland Community College prepping to transfer to PNCA, and this tee is an ode to his track bike – we love it!

I have been printmaking for about 3 years now and I really love it, hopefully I will be able to do it full-time as a career one day. I always like to draw things that I enjoy doing, riding bikes, etc. Since I’ve never gotten my drivers license I end up riding my bike everywhere and that made me want to make a shirt about my fixed gear. I like to create images for areas that I think need more exposure, stuff that I think matters.

Click on any of the pics in this post to open up these images and see how crispy clean Nathan’s print is, and head into the SMASH store to see the barcode on the back. Eco-brown in color, this tee is the earth friendly version of a vintage heather classic from Alternative Apparel, an organic cotton and recycled-poly blend. This tee is also unisex – um, gals you may want to be careful where those bike wheels end up! – we think it looks rockin’ on both of our models above. By the way, a Darling thank you to Barbara and Logan who we stole from work one sunny afternoon in Chester, CT this week! Thanks as well to the talented Whosiepie for these shots.

Thanks again to Nathan, for his super speedy printing, here he is on a recent trip hanging out at Yosemite.

Don’t forget his shirts, and all the student SMASH UP garments, are limited edition and only to be found at Smashing Darling. Check them all out here, an if you know any student printmakers, send them our way! Email mo@smashingdarling.com.
