Providence, RI gets it. They are dedicating a whole week of style events inviting local designers to take the stage. I am happy to shout this out for two reasons. One, I love the highlight on local independent fashion designers because, as we all know, fashion in the US doesn’t only happen in NYC. And two, because a couple of the painstakingly chosen designers are part of our community. There is another bonus here, the emphasis is on style. I like independent, personal style … it makes me happy knowing not every one will look the same.
StyleWeek Providence is a week long celebration of the fashion, design and culture. At its core are daily formal, invitation-only runway fashion shows for buyers, press and stylists from the Northeast and major metropolitan areas throughout the country. Modeled on major Fashion Weeks in cities like New York, Milan, Paris and London; StyleWeek Providence is New England’s only fashion week event that focuses on the business of fashion. StyleWeek’s shows feature a range of designers, introducing both new talent and latest collections from internationally recognized fashion houses to buyers and media.

Twine Pendent Earrings in Steel Medium
Two recycled steel intaglio pendants, inspired by a simple ball of twine, are hung from sterling silver ear wires. Fibrous and organic, twine represents the ties in life that bind us together with ease and a sense of belonging; these strings that we choose to connect to each other. These pendants stand out beautifully combined with a heavy cable knit cardigan, or hanging above a simple V-neck tee. Pendant is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Ear wires measure 3/4 inches in length. About the Designer:
Wakana Koike is a winner of the inaugural ‘It’ Designer contest launched in May 2008 in search of undiscovered talent in the fashion design world. Hundreds of designers from all corners of the country had submitted designs and nearly one hundred thousand votes had been cast by the My’It’Things community.
Three finalists showcased their creations on October 15, 2008 in a highly publicized runway show NYC, and were featured in WWD. The winner of the ‘It’ Designer contest was chosen 50% by popular vote and 50% by the celebrity judges’ votes and was awarded $5,000 toward the production of the Spring 2009 line. The line will be available for pre-order here starting February 2nd, 2009.

Anarchy Women’s Zip Hoodie – Buy Now
This hood is stenciled and appliqued in genuine U.K. Punk tradition with a perimeter of safety pins . This is not a screen printed production item. It is hand stenciled and sprayed with water based/non-toxic textile paint and each one is unique. The Hood lining has a matching Union Jack stencil. There is a second applique on the front which contains an image of the Queen with her mouth stitched shut and thumb holes in the cuffs.

Loretta Nguyen and James Dawson design and produce screen-printed and stenciled t-shirts and appliquéd hoodies. We draw from an urban aesthetic where multi-culturalism and pop culture merge with inner city decay, graffiti and a lo-tech DIY sensibility. We strive to reflect and celebrate this to some degree in our designs. We derive inspiration from politics, history, media and our sexual identities. We look back at our culture to see what has endured and use it as a road map as to where we’re going. As a culture, we are mixing elements from around the world to create the future. It’s important, as Americans, that we see beyond the regression of our recent past and focus on the fact that the world unfolding around us is incredibly exciting.
