My interest in art began at the age of ten when I discovered the work of Vincent Van Gogh and other impressionists. I studied fine art at the New York/Phoenix School of Design, New York, NY, life drawing and water color classes at the Silvermine Artists Guild, Norwalk, CT, and was educated as an interior designer at New York School of Interior Design.

One day I was lying on the floor staring at my paintings trying to think of a way to showcase them in a non-traditional way.  I noticed the morning light hitting “Night Rain” and it struck me how rich and vibrant the colors were in the sunlight; if only it could be carried around.  That’s when I thought of handbags…clutches to be exact, with a wristlet. Brynn Capella is a Southern California native who’s come a long way from her first handmade faux fur handbag that stopped passers-by on the sunny streets of Beverly Hills in the late nineties! From a very early age, she displayed an interest in fashion and design, whether she was playing dress-up or drawing her own designs.

Her creative nature was brought to the forefront during her college years at San Diego State University. Brynn’s talent was evident as she studied art, graphic design and advertising, yet her interest and intuition in broadcasting and music led her after college to the Music Director position of a San Diego radio station.

In an effort to save some money, she began making handbags as gifts for her friends and family. After years of constant compliments and requests from friends and strangers alike, Brynn realized that it was much more than a hobby! (Keep reading…)

Clutch Ring

A little bit of sculpture for your fingers. This sterling silver ring by Free Forged features four delicate tendrils reaching into a cup to clutch a bezel set carnelian stone in place. The band is smooth and round, and the cup and tendrils raise slightly over 1/4th inch or 1 cm above the band.

Custom rings must include size with order, or production may be delayed. Finish options include bright, semi-matte, and oxidized (pictured). Oxidation colors may vary slightly from what is pictured.
Purchases that are missing the size information will be delayed until I can contact you. Please allow up to 6 business days for production.

Your ring will be shipped gift-wrapped. Shop the full Free Forged jewelry collection here.

About the designer:

I’m recent graduate from the University of North Texas with a Bachelors degree in Metalsmithing and Jewelry. I work primarily in sterling silver, copper, brass, enamel, and occasionally beads, semi-precious stones, and found objects.

I’m currently developing several themed jewelry lines,  with my Molecular Series currently in the shop. These pieces are all abstracted forms of molecules – simple sterling silver circles connected in various random patterns. I enjoy varying the texture in the various atoms – it keeps me from getting bored and makes each molecule unique and different from the last!

Keep an eye out for an upcoming series of necklaces, brooches, and earrings in a casual line-art style.

Retro Glam

We got so hooked on retro glam fashion after putting together last week’s set, we decided to repeat the retro theme this week. The minute we found the Meibury dress by Mahtab Azimi, we knew it was “the one” to build the ensemble around. A simple and sophisticated dress, it flows freely to the floor, while hugging a woman’s curves. What a flattering design for just about any body type!  Maxi dresses are extremely hot this season, and allow any woman to feel like a princess. The slit detail on the sleeve is a perfect addition to this elegant and simple.

Because our our dress is dark, we decided to offset it with a cream colored purse. The Oversized Heather Envelope Clutch in Cream Capo by Brynn Chicago spoke to us with its supple leathers and an oversized design. Finally a clutch that can actually fit all of your belongings. Our favorite thing about this lovely handbag though, is the fact that it’s individually handcrafted in the Windy City!

Speaking of wind, we are well into the fall, and the weather will start to get colder and colder (well, for those of us who have seasons anyway). This means one thing: we all need a fabulous scarf to add to our closets. The Enchanted Cashmere Nuno Felt Scarf by NESchwab is as warm as it is elegant. Made with cashmere, fine merino wool, silk and bamboo fibers, it’s extremely sheer, thin and elegant. The designer herself calls it a “sheer symphony of fiber, color and texture”, and we tend to agree. The icing on this fabulous cake? It’s handcolored and handpainted!

We were so compelled by Cimber Designs in Jewelry’s glamorous pieces, that we chose two items to include in our set. The Black & Gold Snowflake ring is perfect to dress up our dress. Containing a mixture of semi precious stones, it’s a one-of-a-kind creation that’s worthy of a royal hand. The Black Onyx Briolettes will delight and play with light as they dangle from your ear at a cocktail party. In a true LadyLUX fashion, these two beauties are handmade.

They say that it’s what on the inside that counts. So what does a lady wear underneath her fabulous glam ensemble? Well, we would never tell, because we are real ladies! But we also know that a true lady would wear Smashing Darling inside and out. The Sassafrass Camisole from On The Inside Lingerie is sure to delight as it supports. You can even match it with Forget Me Not panties for a delicate lace set.

About LadyLux:
Once upon a time, there was girl named LUX. She believed in humanity, doing good for the sake of good, and all things beautiful in our world. As she grew older and began to take stock of the world around her, her mission in life became clear: be a Change Agent. The tasks associated with being an “Agent” is to use her mind and voice to help fix what is broken in the world and empower the people in it to do the same. Thus was born The Lady LUX Network.

Smashing Lace and Pearls

As Fashion Week New York 2009 draws to a close, I wanted to put together something glamorous, yet relaxed; something feminine, yet with a bit of an edge. Black lace is the fabric I think of first when I am looking for

something feminine and edgy at the same time. The Maggie lace dress from the June Collection grabbed my attention; it exemplifies effortless chic. A perfect cocktail dress, it’s made from 100% black silk lace. Round neck, three-quarter sleeves and a relaxed cut make it approachable and wearable.

Tasteful pearls in combination with other stones compliment lace very well. I scoured the Smashing Darling collections in search of beautiful and original pearl jewelry. With pearls, you need to be careful, as a string of uniform pearls can come across conservative or “bride-ish”. I chose multi-colored pearls in unusual arrangements and accented with multi-colored stones.

The most significant piece from our collection are the Jennifer earrings from Passementerie. To create an illusion of cascading waterfalls, “polished prasiolite briolettes have been topped with lush tendrils of sterling silver, freshwater pearl and faceted moonstone,” says the designer herself.

Because our earrings command so much attention, we opted for understated jewelry for the rest of the ensemble. For our necklace, we chose the Tahitian Pearl in Keishi Custer necklace from “I Do!” This gorgeous cluster contains a South Sea shell Tahitian pearl at the bottom. The rest of the necklace and cluster are made with gorgeous natural freshwater Keishi pearls and are adorned with Thai brushed silver disks and clear Swarovski crystal. Every bead is individually wire-wrapped by hand.

To top off our ensemble, we selected the Starburst bracelet from  Carmen Monique Jewelry Designs. Like the rest of our jewelry collection, it features freshwater pearls and Swarovski Crystals. Our last jewelry piece, the Pearl Cluster Ring from Quilibet is similarly adorned with colorful pearls and Swarovski crystals, and is also hand-detailed. And since no outfit is complete without a perfect clutch, I chose the Bijou Oversized Clutch from Rlee Collection. This handmade clutch is gorgeously adorned with a rhinestone brooch and is made from the finest suede and Italian leather. Armed with this ensemble, each woman is dressed to impress and stand out at the most fashionable of parties.

Editor’s Picks by Skye Cassidy

Try as I might I just couldn’t bring myself to pick out a bunch of snuggly, cuddly woolly warm bits and pieces because down here in the Southern Hemisphere we’re just coming into spring and my thoughts are full of lemonade and sunshine.  Tights are banished, boots are relegated to the back of the cupboard, overcoats are out of sight and out of mind, and all I want is a go anywhere dress, some sandals and a shot of pure hot yellow to match the light of our fiercely burning sun.

The Luba dress (or oversized t-shirt if you’re a very tall sort of person) from CUT-IT-OUT is exactly the kind of throw it on and dash out the door piece which will take an Aussie mama like me from beach to playground to beer garden and back again without losing my cool.   I can hardly wait to wriggle my little flipper feet in the sand at my beloved Bondi beach, but that sand can get egg fryingly hot so a pair of yolk yellow sandals are downright essential – these ones from Ricardo Tovar are just the ticket to save me from fried feet in fine style.

When I’m out amongst the waves body bashing (that’s bodysurfing for all you non-Australian types)  a bikini can be a bit of a flight risk, but a one piece like this snappy Jerry Hall style crocodile swimsuit from Black Heart Bunny will keep me covered (and uncovered) in all the right places.   Having a toddler in tow means I rarely get to travel light, but when I get the chance to run off on my own for a few hours I like to take the smallest purse I can find – this yellow Garden Path clutch from Peep Accessories is small but perfectly formed – and that bunny will make my little boy smile too.

When the sky is a clear intense blue day after day it’s easy to forget that there could ever be a grey rainy day – but without those cloudy days the blue skies would never be so sweet. The Stone Cloud ring from Emily Watson is a smooth cool reminder to never take the sunshine for granted.  – Skye Cassidy editor of Skylark and Son
