Open studios make us giddy, especially when a group of designers come together to support each other like the Metal Arts Guild in San Francisco.  If you live nearby, go meet some local designers and see where they work. Learn more about the artists involved here, and if you are a jeweler in the community save the date for the upcoming symposium below. As always, thanks for inspiring us San Francisco darlings!

Hey Philly darlings! Go support some local fashion tonight, learn more here. Philadelphia Design Initiative … well, you sound smashing! Thanks for supporting independent fashion in your community.

As new fall runway fashions make their way onto the streets, it can be hard to create sartorial singularity.  Saving you from the world of copy-cat design, the Philadelphia Design Initiative, a new local-design repping org created by Melanie Gershman and Scott Yesner, is hosting a fashion show called Fresh and Local. The runway extravaganza is meant to showcase the creative forces in style that are springing up locally… (Read full article @ Citypaper)

The System Is Working: Made In the U.S.A

by Mo on September 12, 2011

We came across a new Tumblr last week: Fuck Yeah Made in USA. We are thankful A Continuous Lean is taking the time and effort to share with us the fact that American-made fashion, though scarce, still exists. Call us crazy (we don’t mind!), but we believe that fashion businesses can be created and sustained right in your own community. Yes, we know there is a whole fashion system out there doing it’s own thing, with it’s own rules. But when places like Frock, a.k.a Darling Headquarters, can thrive … well it proves to us that the local system is working. Have a moment with us in this video tour of of our own happy, home factory and see how Mergirl and Whosiepie are defying odds in Chester, CT.

Please take some time to watch this video and get to know a new fashion collective on the block. It gives us such joy to see fashion incubators and collectives popping up across the country. Why leave the community you love for New York or L.A., when all the resources you need are right at your fingertips? Detroit Fashion Collective and others (see below) hope you will stay put and create your fashion vision from your home locale. They also intend to help in a big way. These organizations are creating a new model, ultimately one that benefits both the designer where they are — be it Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Chicago — as well as the entire community around it. We are thankful to see this happening, the future is bright darlings, just make sure you are looking –and shopping– in the right places. If you know of a fashion incubator near you, please comment and let us know! Happy Friday, stay smashing, and spread the word.

We were thrilled to share with you, about a month back, that Darling Deanna Burasco had her designs coming down the runway at the West 18th Street Fashion Show in Kansas City. We love that this show supports local designers and is free to the public. Even better it takes place outside in the heart of the community’s center for art and fashion, taking up the entire block. It’s true, we want to go — (sigh) and someday we will! Here are some images of Deanna’s pieces and the looks they went with below. Click on over the the West 18th Street website for a full slideshow of their favorite looks from the show, and… rock on local darlings everywhere!

We are always happy to read of new resources popping up for independent fashion designers. Tonight SFFAMA hosts a local fashion designer workshop, and a quick visit over to SF Indie Fashion resulted in examples of even more inspired community action. Take a look below, and thanks to Lorraine for keeping us in the know.

We are sending ourselves to Bend, Oregon this weekend in spirit. That’s right, little darling clones are going to go have a fabulous time and finally meet Stuart Breidenstein of Go Robot. We couldn’t be more excited; Stuart was one of the very first designers to open a boutique on Smashing Darling back in 2007! If you want to go back in time, please go read our interview with him here. Of course you are welcome to stay in the here and now and check out this recent piece below, written about him in his own smashing community. Stuart’s studio/gallery -Stuart’s of Bend- lives in the historic Ironworks building in Bend and will be chock full of events this weekend for Last Saturday, details below. If you make it, be sure to weave your way downstairs to Stuart’s for the first ever *clearance sale — oh my. Have fun darlings! Don’t forget: Shop Go Robot on Smashing Darling.
