About the designer:

About Leslie Ann Black
Black Bags is the creation of Leslie Ann Black. Leslie’s philosophy is that simple, uncomplicated, and classic styling is best. Leslie Ann Black has been sewing since in high school (70’s), and she owes her skills to Aunt Betty Lou. Aunt Betty Lou, is the mother of two boys and welcomed the opportunity to have a girl’s day of sewing with her niece. Leslie would start out with simple patterns and with each trip up the mountain (Berwick, PA) would see advancements in skills and techniques. Hopefully Aunt Betty Lou has forgiven her for those horrible John Wayne shirts with ruffles! Some things should never be repeated.

SMASH UP XIIII – Sixties Salon

by Mo on July 16, 2008

There’s nothing better than a pink girlie tank for hot summer days! For number fourteen in our student SMASH UP series we go west, all the way to Portland, Oregon. This fall Adriana Lenarczyk will be a junior at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. Sometimes you have to search for things in life, and other times good things just find their way to you. Adriana has been searching for a major that was a good fit – from Psychology to Studio Art to Graphic Design, until she finally found her current major – Printmaking. Her favorite techniques are intaglio, or copper plate etching, and screenprinting.

Adriana has been inspired by feminist art lately and right now really interested in the work of Kiki Smith, Barbara Kruger, and her teacher MK Guth. The design for this fun, pink summer tank is a photo transfer of a 60s salon chair that found it’s way into Adriana’s life via Goodwill:

“For this design, I was just playing with 6 color prints for class, and I came upon this sweet vintage salon chair that I found at the Goodwill for 20 bucks. Still works by the way! Anyway I put it on my porch. The girls who live downstairs and I sit in it with drinks, and it’s just so girly and the epitome of that kind of “please me” attitude that I found deliciously feminine!”
This 100% cotton ribbed beater tank is one of the top 10 styles for women over at Alternative Apparel. Adriana printed the barcode right up top on the back of the tank, see how the sunlight sparkles on it above! Many thanks to Sydney for modeling – does she look familiar? Maybe you saw her in her own indie dress in the blog…send us any pictures of you mixing up your indie, we love to feature you! More details here.

SMASH UP XV coming soon on August 7th.
Until then, stay smashing and
have a great day!

I stumbled across this post while perusing Twitter and thought it was an important topic for our community.
There are a lot of good links and videos to watch.

After previewing tonight’s episode of the Sundance Channel’s Big Ideas for a Small Planet, I couldn’t help but think that this week’s topic — fashion — tied in very closely with last week’s show on food. After all, we all eat, and we all dress. Our clothes, like our food, generally start off as crops in fields, and the process of transforming those crops into garments typically involves heavy chemical inputs and many miles traveled (especially in this era of globalization). The fashion industry has a heavy environmental footprint, but a number of designers and manufacturers are challenging those norms, and creating clothing that’s both fashionable and sustainable. Take a sneak peak at one of these companies featured in tonight’s episode: Del Forte Denim

click here to read the full thought provoking post about the impact the fashion industry has on the environment and what companies are doing to change.

Stay tuned for Chicago based smashing designer Lara Miller she will be featured on the show Big Ideas for a Small Planet. The show will now be airing Tuesday June 10, 2008 at 9 pm Eastern.

…also making a difference, designers of Funk Divine are using such fabrics as hemp and organic cotton. Type in eco fashion or recycled to find the many designers in our community doing their part to change the impact of fashion on the environment.

Black Hemp and Organic Cotton Zip-up jacket

We are all in the fashion business, buying or selling, I would love to hear you. What are your thoughts on trying to lessen the damage to the environment. It can be small. It is one small act at a time that can add up to something big. Please share, you may give someone an idea they haven’t thought of already.
