There was a time when Hartford was a great small city.  I know this because I grew up just 10 short minutes away. During my short lifetime, 44 years to date, Hartford has slid almost into oblivion. It lost so much of it’s life as a great little city when it became the insurance capitol of the US. All it’s former manufacturing plants are still standing but silently decaying. I know this has been the fate of so many cities across the US. Just when it feels like all hope is lost … along comes 3 young men from the Hartford area, hand making blue jeans on the fifth floor of a city building overlooking empty store fronts on Pratt St. Their company is the Hartford Denim Co.

Their story was forwarded to me by a good friend who originally found it through NPR (flickr slideshow). Hope springs eternal for me. Maybe one day Hartford Denim CO. will be a turning point in bringing the city back to life one stitch at a time.

Thank you Lori for forwarding this story to me. It gives me so much hope for the future.

Recycled Denim Wrist Cuff
by
Lori Lynn Designs

This upcycled denim wrist cuff was created using the bottom band from a denim jacket, adding red and white polka dot ribbon and vintage lace. The cuff is 2″ wide and will fit a wrist up to 8 1/2″. It can be enlarged or shortened about 1″. If you need the size adjusted the designer is happy to do that. One of the perks of buying independent fashion, designers are usually happy to adjust things to fit.

This item is available for purchase on Smashing Darling.

We recently learned from an article originally posted in Racked, that independent designer Bob Bland (Brooklyn Royalty) is partnering up to deliver a whole new way to shop. The designer is taking over the space currently known as, Night Owl, 170 N. 4rth  Street, Williamsburg Brooklyn. The knew boutique will feature her line of streetwear, Brooklyn Royalty, while remaining a full service bar.  Look for Kingdom, (so absolutely fitting a name for royalty) to open April 1, 2010. As always, if you can’t get to Brooklyn, you can always find the line right here on Smashing Darling. Read all about Bob’s adventure at the filming of Semi-Precious Weapons‘ 1st major music video. Love that band members are wearing Brooklyn Royalty denim … big congrats on landing that one Bob! Rock on!

Fun With The Girls From Compai Clothing

by trish on April 16, 2008

Sisters Justina and Faith owners of Compai

I was in in NYC this passed Saturday for a quick overnight. As luck would have it the girls from Compai were rocking it out at Madewell in SOHO. They were sewing on the spot some of the creations they make out of denim from their book 99 Ways To Cut, Sew and Deck Out Your Denim.

Alynn Perl is wearing #92 Penelope Flower Barret from the book.
I was quite fortunate to get this same lovely little number as a pin. I love it!

Great thanks to the people from Madewell for hosting the event.
If you are in SOHO, they are located at 485 Broadway(corner of Broome).

Stay tuned for other events these girls have got coming up and to read our exclusive interview with them.
I would love to hear from you if you are hosting an indie event or want to showcase an indie store.
email me trish(at)smashingdarling(dot)com help us spread the indie goodness.
