Happy Friday Darlings! This news is a few days old but we like to start Friday off with a little giddy cheering (or squealing if you are TrishDarling). Frock — the home of Smashing Darling, TrishDarling’s line Mergirl, and the fab Whosiepie as well — took a lovely 2nd place in the E-List’s CT Shoreline Readers Poll for Best Women’s Clothing! Yahooooo! Darling Dina Varano also took 2nd for Best Jewelry along with a bunch of other favorite shoreline spots for vintage, food, and more – see the entire list here.

In case we have thoroughly confused you about how Frock and Smashing Darling are one…just watch this video below…

Lori Warner Studio/Gallery

N E S T as defined is a structure or place made or chosen for sheltering.  This exhibit explores the idea of nest in three media in a collaborative spirit amongst three prominent Connecticut artists  –  Lori Warner, Dina Varano and Pat Smith. The three artists worked closely together to develop and expand this idea with weekly studio visits over several months where they shared ideas, images, readings and critiqued nascent pieces, materials and techniques.

Read more about NEST…

From a distance nests can look haphazard, but at close examination one can see the deliberate structure.   When Dina Varano creates her art for this collection, she considers the timely process of placing each twig, vine, or delicate grass. “I create a mantra during the process,” says Dina, “and in the end, those delicate lines build a strong structure – an ordered chaos that has purpose and grace.”

CT Indie Fashion: Don’t Miss the e-fair

by Mo on January 19, 2011

Local food, local fashion, music, and –oh my– 75% off! Don’t miss this one day carnival of 30 of the CT shoreline’s best shops and designers, including Darling Dina Varano. Tri-state area darlings, buy yourself a ticket now to save yourself $5 and skip the line on the day of the e-fair. I can’t be there, but I know the Frock gals will be there strolling (a.k.a. not working), and in case you miss the fine print down below – there will be a photo booth, um, for the kids! Oh how we love the photo booth fun…

Happy Holidays darlings. I wanted to share with you what it’s like here in Chester, CT at Darling Headquarters, a.k.a Frock. From here, things look pretty magical, and not just at the holidays – all the time.

Susan Lomuto, creator of Daily Art Muse, experienced the magic firsthand recently, and documented so beautifully what is so often hard to put into words. Working as an apprentice to independent designer Dina Varano in her Chester boutique and metalsmithing studio she wrote about her experience in her blog. From time in the studio, to heartwarming exchanges between designer and shopper/supporter during a recent Chester Open House holiday night, her posts show the essence of why it feels so good to support independent designers, as well as how important it is for a designer to read recognition of their own work, by bloggers, shoppers, media, everyone. Independent designers are on a hard road following their dream, your support goes far.  Thank you. Always Darling Forever.

In the four hours that I was there, I marveled at Dina’s energy and enthusiasm, spending time with almost every person who walked through the door (and there were dozens), often greeting them with a hug, always greeting them with a smile and kind words.

Some of our favorite quotes from the post:

I heard stories. Stories of how Dina had created the perfect gift for a fiance, wife, mother, daughter, lover. Stories of how Dina had taken a beloved piece of jewelry that had lived out its useful life and found a way to incorporate pieces of it into a new design so that it lives on. Stories of how Dina’s shop has been a go-to place to shop in Chester for 15 years.

Dina has built a loyal following of collectors, customers and friends – not only because of the quality of her work – but also because she has spent years cultivating relationships with customers in her community and beyond. Down to earth, authentic, at-the-ready with ideas and flexible, she is a great example of how to build trust and loyalty, and I’m not just saying that because of my apprenticeship.

I walked away that night understanding that I had just witnessed success.  Success built on the foundation of good work and good relationships. I strongly encourage you to continue to develop relationships with your customers and potential customers, whether they come to you online or at a brick and mortar shop. Everyone benefits.

Find a Darling, RISD Alumni Holiday Sale

by Mo on December 3, 2010

I always searched under the Christmas tree for the smallest box I could find on Christmas morning. I knew there would be a lovely, sparkly jewel in there picked out by Dad (a.k.a Santa) that I would oooh and ahhh over all day long. If you are in Providence this Saturday go pick out your own favorite little sparkle handmade by RISD alum at the RISD Holiday Sale. Swing by the booth of Dina Varano for something handmade by her, if you can’t make it… go check out her store on Smashing Darling. Take a quick virtual field trip to her studio via the Daily Art Muse and be inspired.

Today I am dreaming of the day when I can work with a photographer who can help me convey my brand. I found these lovely photos on Facebook of the new PINaR ERIS, Electrogeisha Collection. I wanted to share these with the community because Pinar always does an amazing job conveying her brand through the photos taken of her collections.

This is the place I strive to be. Independent fashion designers, such as Pinar, always inspire me and give me hope for where I know I will be someday with my brand. There are only so many hours in the day, and for now most of those hours are spent running Smashing Darling, my other love. It is because of Smashing Darling I am now surrounded by so much talent I never would have known. Being tucked away in a small little town of 3500 in the Connecticut River Valley sometimes makes it difficult to  meet other independent fashion designers … but not any more.

Leave me a comment and a link to someone who inspires you to greatness. Do you dream about what could be better about your branding and how to convey the message better? What obstacles are standing in your way? Is there anything you can do today to get one little step closer to your goal? I had a great conversation with jewelry designer Dina Varano the other day, and she reminded me to not only work in my business but ON my business.

leni+spine+red+carpet

I was cruising some of our designer’s blog and came across a post by Dina Varano. Dina’s Spine necklace was on The Red Carpet at the Emmy’s this year. I wanted to let the community know so we could all give her a huge CONGRATULATIONS! Read her original post here and leave her a comment because that is just plain awesome.

This is just the beginning (yes, I am mandating) … it is a fun thought to think someday the whole red carpet will be full of women wearing independent and emerging designer pieces. I know this is a devilish thought but I can’t help myself … “Who are you wearing?” asks the reporter. “[Inset a brand name here]“, says starlet. A hush falls over the crowd. People are whispering to each other, “how could she?”  That was so 2009, “who was her styist?”  Sorry, I know that may be a little extreme but I’ve been an independent designer for so long, I get to have these delicious little thoughts in my head every once in awhile. It helps me keep going sometimes. Please know, I wish no one ill will. Just trying to carve out a little piece for us indies.

Cheers,

trishdarling
