We can always count on Williamsburg Fashion Weekend to mark, if not celebrate, the close of official NY Fashion Week shows. For nine seasons they have been merging, and supporting, independent fashion and independent music. This season we spy a darling in the line-up: Alisha Trimble. In years past, the band ladies have been the models — we love that. Get the full list of independent designers showing, as well as the bands, on the WFW website. Then just prepare yourself for a wee bit of lovely chaos, and a whole lot of originality. If you get there, leave a comment and share your blog or pics with us!

Williamsburg Fashion Weekend
Williamsburg Fashion Weekend’s 9th season will be held on September 16th and 17th at Windmill Studios, NYC at 287 Kent Ave. in Brooklyn, New York. WFW provides a platform for young and emerging fashion designers who push the boundaries of design, presentation, production, ultimately re-evaluating the fashion industry as a whole. Past participants have shown us there are many creative ways to be ‘green’ through recouturing, upcycling, recycling, eco-friendliness, transparent business practices, and artisan techniques. This season will be a feast for the audience’s eyes, ears, hearts, and minds. Shows run the gamut from fashion as conceptual art to ready-to-wear and incorporate live music, theater, and dance. The shows are always raw, experimental and forward thinking.

Oh glorious are those who support emerging, local fashion designers! We are thrilled for Cheryl and Marc Maleh who successfully funded their idea for L.E.S. Runway on Kickstarter mid-June. If you are a NYC designer in any of the five boroughs, check this out! Get to know their vision better in Cheryl’s video, then see if you fit the requirements over on the full application page on the Grand Opening website (only a one-time $15 fee). We’d love to be coming to your show this September!
About this project
Part fashion showcase, part pop-up shop, LES Runway brings the runway to the downtown scene. It is an opportunity for emerging, local fashion designers to present their work on the catwalk, display the same creations in a pop-up store and interact with the general public in a truly creative and unique fashion setting. Grand Opening will reinvent itself by day as a boutique storefront where patrons will have the chance to purchase select items straight off the runway and by night as the most intimate, interactive runway ever to hit New York.
My name is Cheryl Maleh, and I am working with Grand Opening to bring LES Runway to life for the month of September 2011. Runway shows will take place throughout the weekends, and a different designer or group of designers will be featured each night. We are looking for designers who live and work in one of the five boroughs to be considered. Designers who back this project with a small contribution of $12 will have their application fee waived. Participating designers will be chosen from these applications by a select group of established local designers and industry professionals.

Sir by Joanna Baum + Fashion’s Night Out, with Society of LES, present:
A Night of Custom Dressing Sessions, Refreshments, and Performance by Alexa Wilding
Friday, September 10th, 6pm – 11pm
129 Bedford Avenue, near North 10th Street

As an official participant in Fashion’s Night Out, Sir by Joanna Baum is celebrating with fellow design friends Society of LES at Sir’s Williamsburg boutique with music and refreshments. We’re also thrilled to be hosting a “window performance” by much-buzzed (W, Interview) singer-songwriter Alexa Wilding at approx 8:30. Alexa is a burst of rainbows, unicorns, and sunshine in one, and even though Nylon named her their “band crush” first, you’ll be crushing hard after her gig with us, too!

Sir Brooklyn
Sir designer Joanna Baum describes her pieces as “softly deconstructed classics” full of “old-school touches.” The label is inspired by vintage chic, Parisian sensibilities, and bias-cut elegance. “I like to think that I’m willing to work with clients and give them a level of attention that might be more traditionally associated with a tailor,” says Baum, an award-winning fashion graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) whose clothing appeared in the Mira Nair film The Namesake.
