UNIQUE LA’s History: Making Consumerism Count
Started in December 2008, UNIQUE LA is now the largest independent design & gift show in the country! We created the event to allow shoppers to discover great local, independent design while taking part in community and supporting the local economy.  The coolest thing about the show is that attendees get the rare chance to meet and shop directly from over 300 hand-selected designers and artists. Our mandate is that 90% of the vendors are local (LA and California), with a sprinkling of amazing American talent from around the country such as Brooklyn, Athens and Portland.

The State of Independent Fashion
Fashion designers held about 22,700 jobs in 2008. About 31 percent of fashion designers worked for apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers; and 13 percent worked for apparel manufacturers. Many others were self employed. Little or no change in employment is projected.**

More and more fashion programs (often without a small business focus) + inspired students + fewer jobs = a large community of independent designers out there on their own. We want to help. What do you need help with most? Please drop us an email or comment and let us know.

In case you missed it, we added location to your boutique (read more). When we complete the search by area function, consumers will be able to type in a location and see the designers near by, and if you like, you can connect with your local Darlings!
Just as a reminder, you can help us build our community by sending us fashion events happening near you, or local boutiques supporting independent fashion. If you have had a good or bad experience with a show or event we want to hear about it. Sharing your experience can help another designer down the road.

Every month there are new designers and new shoppers joining the site – welcome! But this month our new friend on Smashing Darling is PayPal. Not only does PayPal give customers another payment option, it also makes it easier for us to send that payment to you.
Not to fear, there are no added fees with this new addition. But if you already have a PayPal account, please make sure that the email address in your Smashing Darling account is the email you use for your PayPal account.

The holiday craze is just around the corner…if not already happening wherever you are. Multi-tasking indie designers just don’t stop! A Fashion Incubator coming soon to NYC, check it out….We spotted a few darlings in The Fashion Journal that is Darlings Samoy Lenko and House of Versatile Styles, lovely!….Get to know your fellow Darlings in these great interviews: One with fiftyseven-thirtythree in Hyphen Mag and another of Kaytee Papusza in regards to her latest photo shoot. The KRELwear team will be in NYC this weekend if you are nearby for some quickie couture….and Darlings, if you have the time, do go see Coco Before Chanel and be inspired.
