In Your Experience…
This month began with the news of GenArt closing it’s doors after 16 years supporting emerging artists across the country: fashion, film, music. While this was sad news for so many, the news left us with lots of questions: What will replace it? How can indie artists come together to support each other in a way that is financially viable today?

It was also unsettling to read that many designers had lost money in the fallout, including Kate Boggiano who has a boutique here at Smashing Darling. Have you ever lost money to a production company? Is there a solution to situations like this? How do you protect yourself? Please comment or send us an email (trishandjulie@smashingdarling.com) if you have advice for fellow designers.

Fashion advocates in DC? Yes indeed. Congratulations to Lara Miller who was awarded the Leadership in Emerging Business Award at the first annual State of Style Awards and Advocacy Day in Washington.

What is indie fashion? Mainstream fashion? Where do you, as designer or shopper, fit into these definitions? Last week Not Just A Label rocked our world with their answer. Read their musings on Alternative Fashion, and please fill us in on your own unique definition.

Mo

Designer Toolbox #13

by Mo on February 19, 2009

Around the site
…and around the town. It’s been a whirlwind in NYC just swirling around the city supporting darling and other emerging designers on the periphery. And it’s not over yet. Head over to the blog and read a bit about what we have been up to, we promise to tell you more once we stop spinning.
Last night we had a blast at Digital Moda hosted by the Style Coalition, the Next Web crew, and Pop17. Their aim being to join together fashion and tech: mission accomplished. Five darling designers and their models roamed the room mingling among guests. Guests not only were able to see the designs up close and personal, but were able to chat with designers directly. Check out the flickr photo set here, read a darling’s perspective here.

WFW: Where Art Meets Fashion
What better way to celebrate our Smashing Darling second birthday than watching the creations of Kaytee Papusza rock it down the runway? That is exactly where we will be this Friday night, Feb 20th. If you are nearby, come play with us! Williamsburg Fashion Weekend takes place at the Glasslands in Brooklyn Feb 20th and 21st. Over the course of two evenings seven designers will present and 5 bands will play to wash it all down. Who could ask for more?

Gen Art invites you to compete in the 11th Annual Styles International Design Competition, its provocative program for emerging fashion designers. Twenty five finalists will be chosen from over 800 entrants for a chance to present their looks at a high profile New York Fashion Event in May and have a chance to win a $5,000 Award for Design Excellence in five categories:

  • Women’s Ready to Wear
  • Women’s Eveningwear
  • Menswear
  • Women’s Avant-garde
  • Accessories

Entries will be accepted until 11:59pm March 17, 2009.

Submissions will be reviewed at a pre-selection event in mid-April by top editors and buyers from Vogue, Teen Vogue, Elle, WWD, Barney’s, Neiman Marcus, Opening Ceremony and more.

At the event, a Fashion Panel, which has included designers Diane von Furstenberg, Norma Kamali, Betsey Johnson, Cynthia Rowley, Kate Spade, Michael Fink of Saks Fifth Avenue, Tim Gunn of Project Runway and stylist Patricia Field, will judge the designs and select a winner from each category. Styles has been the New York debut for a decade of fashion stars such as Rodarte, Peter Som, Duckie Brown, Hannah Marshall, Jeffrey Chow and Obedient Sons.

Finalists will be notified by phone by April 8th, 2009. Due to the large number of applicants we can only notify the Finalists directly.

To apply by mail please download a printable version of the application. All mailed entries must be post-marked by March 17, 2009

More great goings on in the emerging indie market. I am happy to write about any trunk show, sale, fashion show to help spread the word, especially if there is a Smashing Darling designer involved. Anyone in the vicinity of NYC should make plans to check out the holiday sale that GenArt is having for over 50 emerging designers. Our very own smashing designer Lara Miller will have her designer clothing there. It is a great way to see her incredible designs up close. When she hits it, and she will, you will be able to say you were there. It should a great evening.
