If you are in Providence this Saturday go pick out your own favorite little sparkle handmade by RISD alum at the RISD Holiday Sale. Swing by the booth of Dina Varano for something handmade by her, if you can’t make it… go check out her store on Smashing Darling. Take a quick virtual field trip to her studio via the Daily Art Muse and be inspired.

      Style Week Providence, RI

by trish on March 31, 2010

      wireDresses

Providence, RI gets it. They are dedicating a whole week of style events inviting local designers to take the stage. I am happy to shout this out for two reasons. One, I love the highlight on local independent fashion designers because, as we all know, fashion in the US doesn’t only happen in NYC. And two, because a couple of the painstakingly chosen designers are part of our community. There is another bonus here, the emphasis is on style. I like independent, personal style … it makes me happy knowing not every one will look the same.

StyleWeek Providence is a week long celebration of the fashion, design and culture. At its core are daily formal, invitation-only runway fashion shows for buyers, press and stylists from the Northeast and major metropolitan areas throughout the country. Modeled on major Fashion Weeks in cities like New York, Milan, Paris and London; StyleWeek Providence is New England’s only fashion week event that focuses on the business of fashion. StyleWeek’s shows feature a range of designers, introducing both new talent and latest collections from internationally recognized fashion houses to buyers and media.

Darling designers showing during Style Week include David Chum – Selah D’or, Catalina De La Torre, & Andrea Valentini.

Amy Martin designs organic and rustic jewelry for her darling boutique, Esma Studios, right from her home studio in Chambersburg, PA. Her pieces can be worn everyday, no matter what the occasion. While each piece is great on its own, she wants her jewelry to be layered and mixed together to create a completely individual look.

I love how fashion can be used to express who we are to the world. What we choose to wear gives others a glimpse into our psyche.

      designer Amy Martin
Darling: How did get into jewelry design?
Amy: I love creating, so I’ve done everything from painting to aromatherapy to making handbags.  I guess it’s just natural that I would try jewelry, too. I started making beaded jewelry, but soon became really drawn to metalwork. I taught myself the techniques through lots of research and lots of trial and error. The learning is an ongoing process. I’m always thinking of new things I want to try, and I don’t think I’ll every stop trying to learn new techniques to incorporate into my designs.

Darling: When did you start your own line of jewelry?
Amy: I first started making jewelry about 4 years ago, and I opened my first online shop in January 2007.

Darling: What surprises you the most about having your own line?
Amy: When I first opened my online store, I was surprised that people from all over the country and the world were buying my jewelry! With so much jewelry out there, it’s still such an exciting feeling when someone chooses a piece from my collection. It motivates me to always be coming up with new designs, so I can keep things fresh for my customers.

      Darling
      : What inspires your designs?
Amy: I think the thing that inspires me the most is daily life. I like to create pieces that are practical enough to wear everyday – for work, an evening out, hanging out with friends, etc – but also unique enough to feel special and add excitement to an outfit. My designs definitely reflect aspects of nature, but I also gain inspiration from urban life and rock ‘n’ roll style.

Darling: If you had the choice of any jewelry designer in the world to work with/for, who would that be?
Amy: I really admire Lulu Smith’s work. I love the way she uses resin and her color combinations are just marvelous. I have played around with resin in the past, but was never quite happy with my results so I sort of put it on the back burner. I think it would be great to learn from her to incorporate color into some of my more organic designs.

Darling: What fashion trends, if any, are influencing your jewelry?
Amy: I really don’t pay a lot of attention to upcoming trends. Generally when women buy a quality, handcrafted piece of jewelry, they want it to last them a long time and not feel dated in a few years. While there’s definitely room in a woman’s wardrobe for trendy pieces, my goal is to create designs that will still feel fresh and modern years from now. That said, in the future I may come out with seasonal collections, which would have a few trendier pieces.

Darling: How do you market yourself?
Amy: I’ve actually found word-of-mouth and great customer service to be the best form of marketing. I think good communication and nice packaging make the customer feel special, which encourages them to share their experience with their friends. I’ve also found that staying visible online through sites like Twitter , Flickr , and various forum groups helps get people interested in my work. Lately I’ve also been working on gaining more wholesale accounts, so I’ve joined several wholesale websites that market to retail shops.

Darling: What is the one item in your wardrobe you can’t live without?
Amy: My knee-high boots from Duoboots.com. I searched forever for boots to fit my skinny calves, but could never find any. Duo Boots makes boots according to your calf size. I have 2 pairs so far, and I love both of them! The quality is super and they have tons of great styles to choose from.

Darling: How would you describe your personal style? And who or what influences that style?
Amy: I’m sort of a mix between a fashionista and a comfortista (is that even a term?) I definitely like to have fun with my clothes and keep up with fashion, but I also need to be comfortable. I don’t like anything too girly or too fussy, and I don’t like anything to look too thought out, intentional, or too matchy-matchy. More often than not, I’m wearing jeans, and I love layering multiple tops. I only buy a few pieces each season, so I like to get things that are somewhat classic but have a unique aspect to them. I generally avoid anything too trendy, but may get a couple of trendy items here and there if it’s something I’m really drawn to.

Darling: What does your average day entail?
Amy: Well, I don’t really have an average day, it seems. I’m still working on phasing out my “day job”, but luckily it’s a job where I have a lot of freedom and time to work on my business. While there, I do things like update my website, edit photos, work on my accounting, etc. Then, in the evenings and on my days off from that job, I work on making new pieces, taking photos, packaging orders, and things like that. Weekends are pretty relaxed. My boyfriend lives and hour and a half away, so I usually spend time on the weekends with him.

Darling: Do you have a company mantra that helps you run your business?
Amy: I don’t necessarily have a mantra, I just try to always think about how I can best serve my customers by offering great designs and great service. I pay attention to companies that wow me and companies that turn me off, and use those situations to develop my own formula for creating a great customer experience.

Darling: Tell us about something you LOVE that you want others to know about.
Amy: I love Donna Hay cookbooks! Every dish is beautifully photographed, and the recipes are easy to follow. She calls for a lot of fresh ingredients, which is important to me, and the books are filled with useful tidbits in addition to the recipes. I highly recommend!

We want to shout out a huge congrats to accessory designer Alison Woodward, for being featured in Daily Candy’s Bidding Wars. She is the creator of Reverie, a jewelry line that has been attracting attention from selective stylists including Lori Goldstein, Britt Bardo, Krisana Palma and Lisa von Weise. The label is in its fourth year since launching in 2003.

Today we have an interview with Jean Voute Pratt the brains and beauty behind two sites. Style Observer, a style blog where she helps women put it all together and Gift Girl, her personal shopping website. Shopping for all the girls and women in your life just got a whole lot easier. A couple clicks of the mouse and you’re done!  We here at Smashing Darling are happy to congratulate Jean, today is the launch of Gift Girl’s second version. On top of all this Jean has also been on Access Hollywood with style tips and was a co-sponsor for the site Inside The Tents. I loved reading her coverage of New York Fashion Week. Enjoy reading the interview and be sure to check out her websites.

Trish: How did you get into the business of personal shopping?
Jean: Personal Shopper is a misnomer. I only buy Gifts for Girls. I think of a personal shopper as someone who gets you whatever you want… not really my thing. I started out when I was a young Girl visiting my Dad on the trading desk. The guys would ask my opinion & liked the results of my suggestions. I did it for fun for a few years after college, and then decided to turn it into a real business.

Trish: When did you launch Gift Girl and can you tell us a bit about it?
Jean: I launched Gift Girl in October 2007. At that point it was geared toward helping men find gifts for the Girls in their life. The new 2.0 version will not only help men, but women as well.  The idea is for everyone to be able to find the perfect gift for every Girl.

Trish: Gift Girl 2.0 just launched, what new exciting features are there?
Jean: We have expanded into more than just fashion. We suggest Gourmet, electronics, flowers, sports equipment, etc. There will also be profiles for women that will help generate Gift suggestions.  Each Girl can have a wish list, and the ability to share the wish list with others. You can invite guest members. It’s really become a place to fulfill all your gifting needs – Girlfriend, Sister, Mother, wife, Hostess, Teacher, Friend, etc.

Trish: You split your time between Gift Girl and your blog Style Observer, how did that get started?
Jean: I started Style Observer after noticing that half of my Gift Girl members were women. I reached out to them to find out why. They liked the way I pulled the outfits together in the Collections section, and they liked the overall sense of style. So, I write Style Observer to help Girls pull it all together. It’s a site that helps make trends wearable, it takes runway to reality. I’m like a sister or a close friend telling you, in an absolute honest way, what works and what doesn’t.

Trish: In your opinion, where is fashion trending for spring ‘09?
Jean: I think we’re going to start seeing a lot more of affordable fashions.  I think places like Zara & H&M will have more of an impact. I also think it’s a great time for Indie fashion to make a big push. People are looking for something new and fresh.
I think we will embrace retro-glam – a woman being a woman in a modern way. We will also see Boho for a long time – it will evolve – but it will remain. It’s a wearable style, sexy style, and works differently on every Girl.

Trish: What is the one item in your wardrobe you can’t live without?
Jean: Denim!!! I have about 30 pairs. You can pair them with a dressy blouse, a tee, a fitted jacket, a tunic – endless possibilities.

Trish: How would you describe your personal style? And who or what influences that style?
Jean: I’m definitely a chameleon – depending on my mood. Sometimes my style is really influenced by a place. St. Barts is part of my soul & the fashions there open my eyes to a different way of wearing clothing. People’s style also influences me. I love Carrie Bradshaw for her creativity, I also love Sarah Jessica for her NYC edge, I love Katherine Heigle for her modern classic style. I also love when another person’s style intrigues me. Fellow blogger, Rumi, from Fashion Toast has great style. It’s so different from the way I dress, but I love to see how she puts things together.

Trish: What is your fashion obsession of the moment?
Jean: I’m obsessed with Chanel right now.  When I was younger, I never understood the whole Chanel cult thing. UNTIL… I tried on a Chanel dress. The fit, the feel, the fabric, everything gorgeous.

Trish: What does your average day entail?
Jean: Wow.  I wake up – feed the three dogs – then feed the two boys. Get the boys ready for the day. Then I work-out starting off with a 6 mile run. Shower & dress. Sit down at my computer for as much time as I have before I have to pick up the boys(usually 4 or 5 hrs). Get dinner ready & served. Work for another 2-3 hrs. Try to get the boys bathed and to bed by 9. Then back on the computer until about 11 or 12. Unwind watching some TV for an hour, and then fall asleep.

Trish: What is your style tip for the day?
Jean: When you are struggling getting a look right, put it aside for a few days – it will work itself out. Don’t wear an outfit before it’s ready, or it will bomb.
