FNOvintage: Market Publique Pop-Up!

by Mo on September 10, 2010

The Darlings love vintage, no doubt about that. If you are kickin’ around Brooklyn for Fashion’s Night Out tonight swing by the Market Publique Pop-Up and wish Founder Pamela a happy birthday! The only question left is Bubbly or PBR? You decide…

fno-stripes_med

Last year was a blast, & this year will be even better, with a best outfit contest (winner gets
$100 gift certificate to Market Publique!), tons of vintage, bubbly and
PBR.

What’s Going On
First and foremost, please take a quick moment and answer our two question mini survey – we want to know what you want to find here at Smashing Darling!

If you are in NYC, you know summer is going on – and it is steamy. Recognition for independent fashion seems to be picking up a bit of steam too. We were very happy to see indie fashion in the spotlight recently. Christina Binkley, Wall Street Journal, took a few minutes to chat with Darling Co-Founder, Trish Ginter, among others…please take a moment and read how independent fashion is gaining clout.

Darling Love
Did you know TrishDarling was a freelance costume designer at 15? (MoDarling was kick-ball-changing in dance class at 15! …Miss those days.) Madison Buyer got to know Trish better in this interview; take a moment to read how Smashing Darling came to be.

Did you used to sew your own clothes? Did your mom? Whether you are just starting out or want to start again, you can find inspiration at BurdaStyle. Read about us in their blog, and then go explore!

In Your Experience…
This month began with the news of GenArt closing it’s doors after 16 years supporting emerging artists across the country: fashion, film, music. While this was sad news for so many, the news left us with lots of questions: What will replace it? How can indie artists come together to support each other in a way that is financially viable today?

It was also unsettling to read that many designers had lost money in the fallout, including Kate Boggiano who has a boutique here at Smashing Darling. Have you ever lost money to a production company? Is there a solution to situations like this? How do you protect yourself? Please comment or send us an email (trishandjulie@smashingdarling.com) if you have advice for fellow designers.

Revolution
Fashion advocates in DC? Yes indeed. Congratulations to Lara Miller who was awarded the Leadership in Emerging Business Award at the first annual State of Style Awards and Advocacy Day in Washington.

What is indie fashion? Mainstream fashion? Where do you, as designer or shopper, fit into these definitions? Last week Not Just A Label rocked our world with their answer. Read their musings on Alternative Fashion, and please fill us in on your own unique definition.
