Deitrich Hat

Today’s featured item, Deitrich Hat,  is by independent designer and milliner Anne De Pasquale. This hat was blocked on an original 1930’s hat block. The hat is shown here in velour felt. It can be made in any color available. If you are interested in this stylish little number, please by all means, request other options it may come in. Also a note to keep in mind the vintage hat block used produces hats that fit 22-22.5 inch heads.

Beatrice Cocktail Hat

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! This hive filled with bees won’t sting, but honey, you’ll attract something with this piece!

The hive is constructed using a basket weaving technique and covered in a raw silk. The little bee’s buzzing around are attached by a thin wire so they actually look like they’re flying about! Shop Katie Burley’s full collection here.

About the designer Katey Burley:

I was born and raised in Washington, DC. I followed my heart and my hands to the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD where I studied Fibers and Wearable Sculpture. There, my love of all things cranial was unveiled.

After many interesting adventures, from working in a one room “sweat shop” in NYC, to making one of a kind hats for the runway, I now call San Francisco home.

I hand block and hand trim each hat, with selected materials that are few of a kind or vintage, making each piece couture. Inspired my pieces of discarded history, hunting in alley ways and digging through thrift shops for abandoned souls.

Show Me A Hat Sugar

by trish on August 17, 2009

Picture 21

One of our darling designers, Katie Burley, gave us the heads up about a show on August 21st. She and other local San Francisco milliners have gotten together to collaborate on a hat show. They want all interested to come out and enjoy the evening with them. It is sure to be a fun night and we are sure all who attend will walk away with a little more knowledge about the lost art of millinery.

We would love to see pics from the evening! Email us so we can post in the blog. trish@smashingdarling.com.

My summer wedding is approaching and I still haven’t picked a dress for the big event. I am definitely a non-traditional bride and we already tied the knot in NYC, so I am looking for a fun, light and airy dress with some frill but easy to dance in. Organizing a wedding on the Black sea coast and inviting an international crowd is not making my task easier, especially when most of my friends are in fashion. I would like to surprise people but still be an elegant bride!
I’ve been looking at some of the fabulous designers on Smashing Darling and already like a few glam pieces:

picture-311

A t-shirt ballgown like this one might be quite fun but it should really be in white!

The dead butterfly bird skull dress might not sound appropriate in name but has the lightness I like, with a summer influence and a touch of color! The butterflies are quite a wonderful touch!

I would love a gorgeous headpiece that goes with the summer, flowery, feathery theme, maybe the Beax feathered cloche.

Maybe a pale yellow silk gown with a sexy back would be the perfect summer wedding dress. I love how the back is!

I love that this bishop dress is made from organic cotton and natural dyes and it has an elegant but relaxed attitude, but I’ll have to go heavy on the jewelry for it!

And last but certainly not least the jewels. This 18 Kt gold locket necklace with sea pearls and champagne diamonds seems quite perfect to me!

And the more I dig into it the more I realize I have so much more to see: a veil, a tiara, earrings, shoes, my head is spinning from the shopping excitement!

We have recently been looking around the website tidying up a bit. You know making sure items are listed in proper categories and what not. We came across this Katie Burley hat photographed on a women but listed in the men’s category. We were on the fence as to whether to email Katie or not to make sure the listing was deliberate. This is why, we think it would look amazing on Will.i.am. Below is a picture of Will.i.am and below that that a picture of Katie’s hat. If anyone out there knows Will.i.am, please pass the link on. It might make this milliner’s day to know Will.i.am is wearing one of her hats!

Just sayin’… but you be the judge. You can purchase this hat and others like it in the Katie Burley Couture Millinery boutique through Smashing Darling.

Editor’s Picks by Trishdarling

Two great looks, one great coat. I don’t know about you but that is always a bonus for me. I love being able to create a whole new look just by changing the accessories. This coat/jacket is a feat of engineering. Long and sophisticated with black and white accessories or short and sassy with a knit hat and fun colors. You can’t go wrong.

Anyway
