Yes, we  r e a l l y  wish we could be at this event. We intend to live vicariously through Darling Lindsay Reif, go see her, say hello. East coast stranded like us? No worries, you can shop her Darling boutique for you and yours.  Your guy is going to look just smashing in that pullover…. wink, nudge.

Oct 1  4:00PM // Second Floor

After the success of Content in 2009, we’re again inviting our favorite local designers to individually take over one of 28 rooms on the second floor of Ace, and transform them into a living, breathing expression of their brands and unique inspirations. This event is not a trunk nor fashion show, but a representation of the sensibilities of Portland designers and a portrait of the vibrancy of our local design culture in relation to the larger fashion world in Los Angeles, New York and abroad.

If it’s hard to generalize about what’s selling, what can sellers of craft bank on? For one thing, the need for a carefully crafted, dynamic online presence – be it a shop, website, Twitter account, or Facebook page. Whether sellers are actually selling online, they need to be marketing online.

Please take some time to watch this video and get to know a new fashion collective on the block. It gives us such joy to see fashion incubators and collectives popping up across the country. Why leave the community you love for New York or L.A., when all the resources you need are right at your fingertips? Detroit Fashion Collective and others (see below) hope you will stay put and create your fashion vision from your home locale. They also intend to help in a big way. These organizations are creating a new model, ultimately one that benefits both the designer where they are — be it Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Chicago — as well as the entire community around it. We are thankful to see this happening, the future is bright darlings, just make sure you are looking –and shopping– in the right places. If you know of a fashion incubator near you, please comment and let us know! Happy Friday, stay smashing, and spread the word.

We are thrilled to see that local NYC designers have a home at Grand Opening during fashion week. Kicking off on September 7th and running straight through to October 2nd, Grand Opening transforms into LES Runway – a convertible runway/pop-up boutique for local independent designers. We love it! Tickets are on sale now, yes… open to the general public, for three shows a night Thurs-Sat throughout the entire month. Tickets are only $12, drink included – most excellent. See you there darlings!

LES Runway @ Grand Opening

Part fashion showcase, part pop-up shop, LES Runway brings the runway to the downtown scene. It is an opportunity for emerging, local fashion designers to present their work on the catwalk, display the same creations in a pop-up store and interact with the general public in a truly creative and unique fashion setting. Grand Opening will reinvent itself by day as a boutique storefront where patrons will have the chance to purchase select items straight off the runway and by night as the most intimate, interactive runway ever to hit New York.

September 7th – October 2nd
Runway: Thursday, Friday and Saturday (7pm, 8:15pm, 9:30pm)
Pop-up Shop: Tues, Wed and Sun (12pm-7pm), Sat (12pm-6pm)

SFFAMAFW2011NEW

Oh dear… prepare for us to get all giddy on you again! We can’t help it, ’tis just too good to see independent designers on the runway across the country, and their designs for sale right here on Smashing Darling. To us it is just a beautiful thing! Darling Avni is on the left coast this week as part of the Emerging Designers evening of San Fransisco Fashion Week. Kudos to Owen Geronimo and SFFAMA for these events and all they are doing to bring their local independent fashion community together – we think you rock.

We are excited to see a second round of NYC  independent designers popping up at Chelsea Market this week! Go meet them, go support them, go shop! …Of course we mean that is what you can do when you take a break from shopping here at Smashing Darling this week (wink, wink).

We are seeing so many local lovelies shouting out independent designers in their community, supporting them in this new season of Project Runway which kicks off tonight. We love it. What? You don’t know any local designers on the show? No problem! Tune in tonight and support Darling David Chum of Selahdor with us! Get to know him better in our interview here — and let the games begin! Good luck to all the designers, we can’t wait to see what you whip up to dazzle and amaze us all.
