Be a Social Butterfly in 2010

by Mo on December 28, 2009

Interlude: a musical composition inserted between the parts of a longer composition

An interlude, that is what the week leading up to the new year, and in this case a new decade, feels like to us. Pick some music to get you through, to bid goodbye to 2009 and welcome 2010. Take some time to look back at the year and see what worked, what didn’t, and make a plan for 2010. If you haven’t taken your brand into the realm of social media, we are here to tell you it’s time. Okay, well, we have always said that!  We read this great post just before our holiday began, and just wanted to make sure you didn’t miss out. Learn about how social media changed fashion in 2009 over at Fashionably Marketing.

Picture 2

It has been exciting to watch more and more people supporting independent fashion, both online and off, since Smashing Darling was born back in 2007. In 2010, be a social butterfly, tell your story as a designer, talk about your process, share it with the world through your blog (you have one right?) and in social media communities. Connect those online and offline communities and let’s all see what the next decade brings!

Podcast: A Conversation with Smashing Darling’s Julie Rorrer and Trisha Ginter

January 30, 2008 — 02:30 AM PST — by Mark ‘Rizzn’ Hopkins

Smashing Darling is ‘an indie fashion site that features independent designers and their products’ founded by Julie Rorrer and Trisha Ginter, both guests and finalists at this year’s Open Web Awards. It is a social network/catalogue site that allows you to join as a designer (or as they say, ‘get smashed’) or to shop as a consumer, thereby either sampling or creating fashion designers that fall outside the mainstream design lines you’ll see at the major department stores.

It’s an interesting idea, and something that has clearly been well executed, something someone like me who isn’t a fashion aficionado can plainly see. In the interview, the founders express how the site went from idea to reality and what their motivation behind the site was

This interview is another in a video series taken by Brad Hunstable from the Open Web Awards that we’ll be broadcasting here at the blog and in our podcast over the next several days.

Mashable Open Web Awards Are Only A Day Away

by trish on January 9, 2008

There is only a day left until the Open Web Awards, the award ceremony for social websites hosted by Mashable and 30 other blogs. They’ve already filled all the alloted places, but a dozen more super-special people can cram in. These include sponsors (yes, you can still get sponsor benefits if you contact Adam today) & special guests. Representatives from hundreds of tech companies large and small, including Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Friendster and Facebook, will be in attendance.

Julie and I will be in attendance to represent the indie design community and Smashing Darling. This is awesome that Smashing Darling received the honor of 2nd place for Best Social Shopping Network among so many great websites in this contest. The most amazing part to us, the site isn’t even a year old yet. Pretty darn cool, if I do say so myself.

The event will be held at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, California on Thursday, January 10th from 7:00 – 10:00 PM. Mashable founder Pete Cashmore, Editor Adam Ostrow, Lead Writer Kristen Nicole and Adam Hirsch.
