The System Is Working: Made In the U.S.A

by Mo on September 12, 2011

We came across a new Tumblr last week: Fuck Yeah Made in USA. We are thankful A Continuous Lean is taking the time and effort to share with us the fact that American-made fashion, though scarce, still exists. Call us crazy (we don’t mind!), but we believe that fashion businesses can be created and sustained right in your own community. Yes, we know there is a whole fashion system out there doing it’s own thing, with it’s own rules. But when places like Frock, a.k.a Darling Headquarters, can thrive … well it proves to us that the local system is working. Have a moment with us in this video tour of of our own happy, home factory and see how Mergirl and Whosiepie are defying odds in Chester, CT.

Happy Friday Darlings! This news is a few days old but we like to start Friday off with a little giddy cheering (or squealing if you are TrishDarling). Frock — the home of Smashing Darling, TrishDarling’s line Mergirl, and the fab Whosiepie as well — took a lovely 2nd place in the E-List’s CT Shoreline Readers Poll for Best Women’s Clothing! Yahooooo! Darling Dina Varano also took 2nd for Best Jewelry along with a bunch of other favorite shoreline spots for vintage, food, and more – see the entire list here.

In case we have thoroughly confused you about how Frock and Smashing Darling are one…just watch this video below…

I think independent fashion designers are really lucky to be doing their own thing. I know I thank my lucky stars everyday. I get to do what I love and it’s my job. I have come to the conclusion that this all needs to be documented. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg for the independent fashion industry, and we’re all here doing our thing helping to create this industry. I thought it would be great to share studio moments with our readers so they can get a glimpse into what goes on behind our studio walls. My studio happens to be part of my retail store, FROCK. I am very lucky to be sharing it with Laura Williams designer of Whosiepie.

Email your studio post to Trish.

Love that you can see my Anouk tank.

ps.
how lucky am I?
I was cutting vintage Liberty of London fabric circa 1978.

pss. If you are ever wondering what it looks like behind the scenes of Smashing Darling … FROCK happens to be Smashing Darling HQ too.

Welcome to #23 – The Good News

by Mo on January 8, 2009

What’s Going On
Change. A new year, a fresh start.
Change for Trishdarling, our parade leader, comes big. Did you know that Trishdarling is also Mergirl? Read here, and now you do. Closed are the doors to her Chester, CT boutique, and into a new studio she goes…soon we will all be drooling over new collections in her darling boutique. News stumbles in of many an indie designer closing their physical location and relying on word of mouth and their online presence only. This is why it is so important to talk to us and be a fan whether it is on your very own street corner, Facebook, Twitter, or wherever you like to gab the most!

Where is Mergirl?

Custom sterling silver earrings (new) by DINA VARANO. A FOUNDLING “poppy” hair pin (borrowed)

and a really amazing pair of SALVATORE FERRAGAMO (blue) wedges.

My husband is wearing JOHN VARVATOS pinstriped trousers, shirt by ROBERT GRAHAM, vest by PENGUIN and shoes by REEF.

What’s your favorite piece of clothing?
Eggplant STEWART+BROWN organic cotton longsleeved tee. Several years old. Many, many washings. Love it.

What 3 things can’t you live without?
My Beautiful Husband
Hot Sauce (Challulah, namely)
Coffee

What one word describes you most?
Observant

How do you wear your indie?

by trish on June 8, 2008

Here, Juliedarling is wearing a custom necklace designed by Catabella. Don’t know if you can read it but it says,’Original Darling’. The MerGirl stretch lace top with open neckline is perfect for showing it off.

How do you wear your indie fashion? What do you pair it with? I would love to hear. Email me trish(at)smashingdarling(dot)com.
