Indie Fashion Finds: New On Smashing Darling

by trish on January 16, 2012

It’s January. The calendar just flipped to a new year. This always makes me get a little dreamy. I dream about what will be in the months to come. I dream about all the goodness to happen. I dream about where I want to be in my life. I think about the 12 months I have before me to reach my new goals and make things happen. This always seems a good time to me to have fun with my wardrobe too. I like to buy something might not wear to the office … something just for me that reminds me the whole year to keep dreaming.

Resources For Independent Fashion

by Mo on April 1, 2011

Reminder! Comment to win a copy of Fashion Unraveled: In this book Jennifer shares lessons she has learned from good decisions and bad as she built her fashion brand. The chapters and worksheets in the book are short and sweet so you can attack them in small doses. Read more

More darlings coming together to help designers…that always makes our hearts sing! There isn’t a website to link to yet, but we’ll let you know when there is. Guilded brought to you by STUDY NY and Bahar Shapar.

GUILDED is almost ready to launch with our series of classes and training in sustainable design and methods, workshops and master classes in artisan techniques and a platform for collaborative community. In the meantime, though, we’d like to celebrate the month of April (Earth Month) with a whole bunch of exciting events. (Email for more info: guildedstate@gmail.com)

Fabric & Trim Sale
Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10
Do you have extra fabric, notions, trims or accessories that you know you’ll never use just taking up space in your studio/home?  If so, it’s time to get rid of it all.  Purge, purge, purge! We’re going to do a major marketing push in the design schools (Pratt, Parsons, FIT, SVA) to offer students low-priced fabrics for their final projects and other designers new fabrics to use.  This event is a way to dispose of excess without contributing to the waste stream, and a way to share sustainable and vintage fabrics with students and young designers.  As with the sample sale we will offer master checkout, staffing and bags.  However, since we imagine everyone has different quantities of stock, the fee will be 20% of sales instead of the flat rate we charge for sample sales.

Nicki Minaj Rocks Krelwear on Letterman

by Mo on November 22, 2010

Nicki Minaj appeared on David Letterman last Thursday eve and we are so happy to see her decked out in independent fashion, KRELwear. This appearance coincided with the release of her new CD, Pink Friday, out on you guessed it, the day after this appearance. We had to share this with the community so everyone can join us in saying congratulations to designer, Karelle Levy, for dressing the female rapper that is causing quite are stir. Nicki is known to many as the Barbie to Lil Kim’s Queen Bee title in the world of rap. That beef aside, we are so happy for Karelle. ROCK ON darling!

How can you live with yourself without having this killer outfit?

Independent Fashion: The Good News

by Mo on November 18, 2010

Post by Trish

As NY turns away workrooms in favor of real estate that will bring in more money, we are happy to be highlighting fashion workrooms popping up all over the US … and I’m sure, all over the world. I know that first sentence might sound a bit biting but I have to admit I am hurt NY keeps chasing workrooms and manufacturing out of the city for the sake of the all-mighty dollar. I know I shouldn’t care since I am not a designer in NY anymore. I have my own beautiful design studio and shop in Chester, CT and am making my own dream come true. It still saddens me for all of the designers still designing in NY watching what was once one of the most vibrant fashion capitols get reduced to a strip of fashion retail giants. Sorry Mayor Bloomberg, I don’t agree with your new plan, or that it will keep NY a fashion capitol. Fashion doesn’t exist without workrooms. Plain and simple. If you take away the very thing that creates fashion, all you have left is a pretty, but hollow facade. Have you ever seen the pristine beautiful fences made out of plastic … doesn’t take long before they are covered in mold or algae and look way worse than a weathered authentic wooden fence. What do we have when there is no authenticity left?

Many kudos to the brave designers and entrepreneurs that don’t believe the status quo of shipping all manufacturing overseas and continue every day to live their dream despite what “fashion business experts may” say. Below we highlight two designers/workrooms in Detroit and Seattle. Keep tuning in because we won’t ever stop supporting and highlighting independent fashion designers and their creative spaces.

Detroit is Smashing

Today’s Featured Item

by trish on June 21, 2010

hadda dress by shardann

Today’s featured item is by SharDann of Brooklyn, NY. The Hadda Dress is made from pinstripe wool suiting. This garment has a super soft feeling and rich color. Exposed zipper at side seam adds extra punch of color. It might seem kind of crazy to think about wool when summer is just beginning, but it is never too soon to think about what you will need for next season.
