Welcome to #36: Indie Fashion, All the Time

by Mo on February 12, 2010

What’s Going On

The craze of NYC Fashion Week has arrived, and with it a blanket of sparkling snow! Bloggers are in a tizzy, with good reason, out there covering shows to bring you details and images galore. Want to see a runway show? Well, it’s not too hard to catch a livestream this season. We love how fashion is becoming more accessible to you, wherever you are. Mostly we love how tech is making it easier for you to connect with designers everywhere making your clothes – THAT is fabulous.

Connect in Cali

We dedicate this newsletter to all of the Darling designers out there promoting their work all the time, and the communities supporting them. We can’t get everyone in one email, but you get the drift. Oakland based Darlings, FiftySeven-Thirty Three have a good thing going on. Buy up some of their sweet screenprinted goodies and show it off. Join their Flickr Beautiful People group, or better yet -click here- to show off your sexy and win in their latest contest. FInd them and be a fan on Facebook.

Chicago Darlings

With the Chicago Fashion Incubator supporting emerging designers in the windy city there is a steady stream of indie fashion happenings rolling in. Darlings Anna Hovet, Lara Miller, and Che Woo Designs,  immediately pop into our head. We are thrilled that these darlings have so much support in their community. If you are in the Chicago area, or headed there for a weekend, keep an eye on the Darling blog – there is sure to be an event supporting indie designers while you are there!
Follow what all of these Darlings are doing on Twitter:

Ohhhh Miami

The snow is falling here, sun is shining there. No matter the weather, Karelle Levy, designer of Krelwear, either has an event (or two or three) happening, is planning one, or is at her studio (or maybe at the Standard) knitting her heart out. If you get the chance to have her whip you up a piece of quickie-couture, ask her what it’s like to be an independent designer, and get ready to be inspired. If you are in Miami anytime soon, check out her installation: Oh The Tangled Webs We Weave.

House of Organic, The Green Shows

by Mo on October 1, 2009

I really need to get myself over to House of Organic, and soon. TrishDarling and I caught their show, part of the Green Shows, during Fashion Week in NYC a few weeks ago. The live music groove set the mood perfectly as we walked in the door. Though this show was a collective of many designers, the aesthetic was consistent and strong. Graceful shapes, beautiful raw fabrics and intricate crochet details made us both, texture obsessed, want to jump for joy. Oh, and then there were the accessories – lovely. See for yourself below, and learn all about House of Organic here.

Darling Fashion Around the City

Uptown. Downtown. Brooklyn. From luxury pieces to ethical bits – we have been popping around oohing over Darling (and others like Bodkin, image right) Spring Collections. The Green Shows were especially inspiring, featuring a selection of eco-conscious fashion designers including Darling Lara Miller. We cannot wait to see her beautiful Spring line up on Smashing Darling. Bob Bland rocked her show at her very own venue The Arsenal, check out this Village Voice slideshow – sweet! We were thrilled to watch Minna K present at Nolcha, as well as meet some wonderful accessory designers in the Accessory Lounge…more recaps in the blog, coming soon.

Brand Yourself Darlings!

This past Monday eve we got to see some of our favorite people-and meet some new faces- at the second IFB Dress Up Soiree, hosted by sweet Jennine from The Coveted. It was a packed house, and a great panel discussing the future of online fashion media. Stay tuned to the IFB blog and catch recaps.
We are so inspired by all the amazing bloggers out there able to use their voice to promote their own personal brand. Take some time to read this post by Crosby of PR Couture. Info about branding, how important good photos are, prioritizing as a small label and loads more. A must read.

Passion, Process: Blog Away

Darlings, are you out there blogging about your brand, your inspiration, and the passion that keeps you going through the wonderful insanity that is life as an independent designer? We hope so. If you have a blog and we don’t know about it, or a favorite indie designer’s blog that you read, please let us know so we can link to it from the Smashing Blog. We want people to know all that you do to keep your designs out there. Read this Grechen’s Closet post/comments about supporting independent designers and see all those out there supporting your world.
Things Not to be Missed
Please take a second and go vote for Darling Evil Kitty in Project:Design. We love what St Louis is doing for indie!

Speaking of our favorite bloggers…(wink wink) what better way to breeze into Fashion Week than a meet-up two nights ago at the NYC boutique Debut, hosted by Deanne of Dream Sequins. It was a lovely time, check out the pics here. Thanks Deanne!

Vintage, sweet vintage, wherefore art thou vintage….are you in love with all things vintage? Well, my darlings, then you must go check out Market Publique! This online, vintage-only marketplace for people to buy, sell and discuss vintage fashion will surely make you drool…as well as bid away on your favorites!  We met co-founder Pamela Castillo back during NYC Fashion week, go see her (and her crew) rock their vintage wears here, and check out what she found to love in the Darling world below.

Smashing Darling Editor's Picks

Tib Nelson Designs Lucky Penny Romper: I am all about rompers and jumpsuits this season. They have the ease of a complete outfit just like dresses, but you can sit on the grass and picnic without worrying about wardrobe malfunctions. This romper is especially cute because of its flattering cut and sailor-style buttons.

Hello, Fabulous Vintage Fish Pendant Necklace: I always wear at least one thing that’s vintage. I’d accessorize that fabulous romper with this vintage 60’s fish pendant necklace and keep the look ocean-themed.

Nothing Simple Earthy Citrine Cuff: One accessory is never enough. And I like my jewelry to make a statement. This cuff does just that.  The bigger, the better.

Bronwen Handcrafted Red Leather Mac Case:
With our new site and the blog, I am always online; which means carrying around my computer everywhere. I am loving this red leather case which is not only much more fashionable than your average neoprene sleeve, but also keeps your mac padded with luxurious faux fur.

Adolfo Sanchez Alexander Tote:
Totes are my handbag shape of choice: they fit your entire Brooklyn apartment, are easy to carry, and this black croc one goes with everything.

Brooklyn Royalty Metallic Leather Fleur Barrette:
As you may have guessed by our name, at Market Publique we love all things fake French. One of those things is this fleur de lys barrette. And since it’s from MP’s hometown, Brooklyn, I love it even more. The red color makes it pop with brunette or blonde hair, so it’s perfect for anyone.
