Local Handmade Markets: NYC

by trish on November 29, 2011

Buy Local,handmade,nyc

I love seeing the variety of locally handmade products in NYC. It is so, right up my alley! It is the perfect way to do holiday shopping. If you have a chef on your list, watch the video … there are beautifully made knives from Brooklyn. There is also handmade yoga wear, jewelry, and what sounds like amazing jerky. It doen’t stop there either but you’ll have to watch so you can meet all the purveyors! I am hoping I can make it to one of these markets before they end!

FASHION DRAFT NYC: ARE YOU READY TO BE DRAFTED?

NYC Fashion Draft

We are usually shouting out the great accomplishments of already working independent fashion designers. Today we are speaking to talented college seniors with their sites set on the fast paced life of the New Your Fashion Industry. Was there a time when fashion companies could look in the own back yards to find the perfect person for the job? If so, this isn’t the case anymore. There are so many colleges all over the world training the future fashion. The companies involved in Fashion Draft NYC understand the person they are looking for may not be in NYC. The awesome part, they are willing to pay for all food, travel, and lodging expenses. Students need only apply if the are interested to interview for full-time, management-track positions at companies in the New York City fashion industry, such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Gilt Groupe, and LF USA.

The inaugural Fashion Draft NYC,  is a program from The New York City Economic Development Corporation and The New School through its division Parsons The New School for Design (“Parsons”) that will select top graduating college seniors from around the world and bring them to New York City. The program, which will be held from Thursday evening, February 16th, through Saturday, February 18th, 2012, will include opportunities to network with fashion industry executives, learn more about the business of fashion and interview with some of the City’s top fashion firms.

…it was an intimate show that felt worlds away from the Fashion Week crazy. Not that it wasn’t a professional, amazing-looking show, but it felt private and special in a way that the FW tents are not.

(Keep reading at The 9 Per Week Project)

Hey NYC fashion lovers! Just a reminder that you have the rest of the month to see NY emerging designers on the runway at LES Runway. See the full schedule and buy tickets at the Grand Opening website (also the darling hosts of the occasion). Don’t forget you can shop those same runway looks in that very space. When there isn’t a runway event the space morphs into a pop-up boutique as well. Most excellent we think! See dates and times below. How about one of these for every city? Sounds good to us…

September 7th – October 2nd
Runway: Thursday, Friday and Saturday (7pm, 8:15pm, 9:30pm)
Pop-up Shop: Tues, Wed and Sun (12pm-7pm), Sat (12pm-6pm)

We are thrilled to see that local NYC designers have a home at Grand Opening during fashion week. Kicking off on September 7th and running straight through to October 2nd, Grand Opening transforms into LES Runway – a convertible runway/pop-up boutique for local independent designers. We love it! Tickets are on sale now, yes… open to the general public, for three shows a night Thurs-Sat throughout the entire month. Tickets are only $12, drink included – most excellent. See you there darlings!

LES Runway @ Grand Opening

Part fashion showcase, part pop-up shop, LES Runway brings the runway to the downtown scene. It is an opportunity for emerging, local fashion designers to present their work on the catwalk, display the same creations in a pop-up store and interact with the general public in a truly creative and unique fashion setting. Grand Opening will reinvent itself by day as a boutique storefront where patrons will have the chance to purchase select items straight off the runway and by night as the most intimate, interactive runway ever to hit New York.

September 7th – October 2nd
Runway: Thursday, Friday and Saturday (7pm, 8:15pm, 9:30pm)

Oh glorious are those who support emerging, local fashion designers! We are thrilled for Cheryl and Marc Maleh who successfully funded their idea for L.E.S. Runway on Kickstarter mid-June. If you are a NYC designer in any of the five boroughs, check this out! Get to know their vision better in Cheryl’s video, then see if you fit the requirements over on the  full application page on the Grand Opening website (only a one-time $15 fee). We’d love to be coming to your show this September!

About this project

Part fashion showcase, part pop-up shop, LES Runway brings the runway to the downtown scene. It is an opportunity for emerging, local fashion designers to present their work on the catwalk, display the same creations in a pop-up store and interact with the general public in a truly creative and unique fashion setting. Grand Opening will reinvent itself by day as a boutique storefront where patrons will have the chance to purchase select items straight off the runway and by night as the most intimate, interactive runway ever to hit New York.

My name is Cheryl Maleh, and I am working with Grand Opening to bring LES Runway to life for the month of September 2011. Runway shows will take place throughout the weekends, and a different designer or group of designers will be featured each night. We are looking for designers who live and work in one of the five boroughs to be considered. Designers who back this project with a small contribution of $12 will have their application fee waived. Participating designers will be chosen from these applications by a select group of established local designers and industry professionals.
