Oct 1  4:00PM // Second Floor

After the success of Content in 2009, we’re again inviting our favorite local designers to individually take over one of 28 rooms on the second floor of Ace, and transform them into a living, breathing expression of their brands and unique inspirations. This event is not a trunk nor fashion show, but a representation of the sensibilities of Portland designers and a portrait of the vibrancy of our local design culture in relation to the larger fashion world in Los Angeles, New York and abroad.

Lindsey Reif is a self-taught seamstress and designer living in Portland, Oregon.  She took up sewing as a hobby after migrating to Oregon from the midwest.  Her first projects were one-offs, made from tablecloths, curtains, or whatever she could find at thrift stores.  Since then, her creations have evolved into well-tailored, smart garments.  In 2008, Lindsey decided to launch her own line, Reif, a collection of men’s and women’s clothing.  Finding frustration with her own wardrobe, and the lack of pieces to tie everything together, Lindsey decided to create these wardrobe staples. To stitch; a thread or line that holds things together – this is the literal translation of the ancient Sanskrit word “sutra”.

In the “Healing Sutras” I use contemporary embroidery on antique fabric as a canvas to explore the common threads that bind countless generations of women. Wounds – both physical and psychological – are given life using delicate, meditative stitches. Traditionally thought of as “woman’s work”, sewing is a time consuming and contemplative process, each thoughtfully considered stitch becoming integral to the whole.

Just another one of those darling independent fashion events that we hate to miss! Where’s our private jet? This Friday night we’d love to be headed to the Bossanova Ballroom out in Portland, OR for The Portland Mercury’s 7th Annual Spring Fashion Show: Open Season. We spotted a few smashing independent designers in the line-up, including Lindsay Reif and Chelsea Erhart — we can’t wait to see what they have been working on. If you are blogging about indie fashion out there on the left coast and you attend, do fill us in pretty please!

Springtime at the Reif Haus always means crazy, hectic, sewing times. For the third year in a row I will be showing at the Portland Mercury’s annual fashion show, alongside the best of the best in local talent. I’m really excited, to debut my new collection at the show, along with accessories from my friend Coco’s line Coco Cardenas. (Read full post from Reif…)

Everybody needs a sanctuary in these troubled times – a place of joy and hope for the future.

Yet another community coming together to support independent designers. Portland Sewing brings together eight emerging designers this weekend to present their 2011 collections. The interior of the sewing school will be turned into an indoor garden and proceeds will go to Peace Garden at Coburn Place Safe Haven – a local shelter for women. Here is a glimpse at some of the designers who are involved…have fun Portland darlings, we can’t wait to see the pics!

The first Friday of each month equals First Friday Art Walk in Portland, Maine. Picture streets packed with happy art walkers feasting their eyes on creativity spilling out of every nook and cranny. Darling Dina Varano has a sketchbook on view in The Sketchbook Project, which has landed there for another stop on it’s tour at Space Gallery. If I had a magic carpet I would swoop in and scoop up TrishDarling, we’d jump off at Otto Pizza to fuel our wandering, and then pop into some of these stops below. See the full listing of events here.

“Found” explores the lives of things after they’ve been discarded and rediscovered–the cast off, the first attempt, repurposed fabric, lost images–put together, these disparate elements unify each other and create a language of desire and acquisition. Featuring vintage Japanese indigo textiles, mid-century studio pottery, vintage snapshots.

There is a Fashion Feud kicking off tomorrow night in San Francisco to last all spring out on the left coast – SF, Portland, and Seattle – sweet! Local designers will compete to be awarded top designer of their city, with Fashism providing live mobile voting. Read all about it below and see what you’ve missed in the video from the 2010 Feud.

FASHION FEUD is a live fashion design competition. Designers are given a mystery bag of Mood Fabrics material, a live model, a hair and makeup team, and an hour to create a design. The finished designs are presented by the models to a live audience and then voted on by both the audience and our panel of local industry judges. The winner from each round advances to the Finals in each city to compete for the title of best designer in their city.

The support for local designers in so many creative communities across the country just makes our hearts sing. We are behind every collaborative community in spirit, and fueled by inspiration from stories like this one about Detroit on NPR a few days ago. Another community chock full of creatives cheering and supporting each other onward is beautiful Portland, Maine. This weekend independent designer Meredith Alex, a.k.a MadGirl, presents a runway show of one-of-a-kind creations of re-worked hunter’s plaid, camouflage, and flannel; the models will be rocking vintage L.L. Bean boots – and yes, of course there will be live music, drinks and more. Portland darlings, I miss you, have a blast! Read more about MadGirl and the event in the Portland Press Herald.
