Around the Site

Are you all busy enough this time of year? Wow. There is so much to do. We know how hard you all work to produce the beautiful items you add to Smashing Darling. So we just want to say, Good work! and Thanks! Thanks to you, people are buying quality designs right off these pages, and a gift that really means something…both to you, the style maker, as well as all the style seekers out there. Rock on.

how to – Promote Each Other

One of the main reasons Smashing Darling was born was so a community of emerging designers could help each other grow. We strongly believe that we are all more powerful together. Together we can all increase sales and visibility by supporting and encouraging each other. More fun with this idea coming soon in 2009.

Until then here are a few ways you can support us all: Find us and join our Facebook group, and tell all your friends too. More and more we are seeing darlings popping up in Twitter, it’s great, come join the stream! Tell everyone wearing your designs to add a pic into our Flickr group and share the love.

Don’t Miss This

Did you miss this most excellent tidbit in the blog? How cool is OpenZine? A platform that allows users to create their own online magazine! Slim pick-ins so far in the fashion category. C’mon darlings, go work it! After all, doesn’t every emerging fashion house need it’s own magazine?

Last, not least

If you are in New York please come join us at a Fashion 2.0 Meetup, and be a part of the conversation. Read all about it here.
If you are elsewhere in the country, maybe start your own Meetup? What is the worse thing that could happen? You meet someone new…you realize their business would compliment yours…and new doors are open to you that you never knew existed.

Season’s Greetings, Happy Holidays, Peace, Love

~ from the Darlings to all of you

Last Call For…
Fashion Workshops
This Weekend in Atlanta!

Sept 27th & 28th:
*HOW TO START YOUR FASHION COMPANY (Clothing + Accessories Lines)

*HOW TO START YOUR FASHION COMPANY (Boutique + E Commerce Website)

*HOW TO MANUFACTURE /MASS PRODUCE YOUR CLOTHING + ACCESSORIES LINES

*HOW TO BECOME A FASHION STYLIST

We only have a few spots left so register now or get more info @ www.mshopnyc.com!
M Shop NYC has rocked out a NYC boutique, are E-commerce website owners; produce tons of Fashion Shows & Special Events for designers, retailers, and corporations nationwide; have a Public Relations arm; are Fashion Consultants; co-design the successful line LaMa, as well as our own M Shop line ; and have dressed everyone on the A-List including Mary J Blige, Shakira, L’il Kim, Lenny Kravitz, Pharell, and the Dixie Chicks.
We have been seen spitting fashion tips and trend spotting on Full Frontal Fashion, Fox’s Ambush Makeover, The Today Show, and every funky fashion magazine out there. And we do it ourselves, without any press person working for us.
In addition to the most informative workshops around, we currently teach at Parsons The New School For Design in NYC, and have a marketing partnership with 24/Seven, the Fashion Industry’s leading job placement agency. We teach a separate How To Manufacture/Mass Produce Your Clothing + Accessories Lines Workshop that you’ll need to mass produce your line once it’s designed. We also do Manufacturing and Production Consulting (with over 20 years of fashion manufacturing and production experience in the NYC Garment District) and have written the guide booklet “HOW TO MANUFACTURE/PRODUCE YOUR DESIGNS,” available now by clicking here. For more information on the instructor’s background click here.
*This workshop has been attended by Chris Stokes (Music Producer and Film Director), Marques Houston (Recording Artist and Actor), and their team to gain fashion industry knowledge for their new high end line Christopher Brian Apparel.

You will learn:
1. Business Aspects-
How to start, structure, and form a working business plan, various options for your company structure, the proper licenses or registrations you will need. Learn how to get loans, financing, or grants, do’s & don’ts of using your own money, and other helpful resources that will get the job done.

2. Developing, Producing, and Sourcing your Clothing and Accessories Line-
How to get your ideas out of your head, even if you can’t sketch, and made into an actual line – whether it’s shoe, clothing, or accessories. Getting samples and patterns made, graded, and more. Find out how to secure fabric and trims, and to create development sheets. Learn the importance of timing and being able to deliver your products, spotting trends, conducting market research, and building a collection that will sell to retailers. Learn all of the options for selling your line, including trade shows, showrooms, sales reps, and tons more.

3. Marketing and Brand Identity-
How to pick & register your business name, the importance of logos, trademarks, company image, and identity. Once you have that- how to target the right market based on what you are producing or offering to make sales.

This 2 hour workshop is very thorough and intense, but is a fun place to network, meet, and learn. You will gain knowledge on all aspects of starting a fashion line. In fact, you will most likely not find all of this information in any one place. This workshop provides invaluable consolidated information based on experience that makes applying it extremely approachable. A question and answer period will follow so that you get your personal questions answered. In addition, all registrants will receive access to our Fashion Blog and a very thorough Resource Guide that includes tons of resources you’ll need along the way. No recording devices permitted. *Any other use of the workshops, including for reproduction purposes, modification, distribution or republication, without the prior express written permission of M Shop NYC is strictly prohibited.

Reserve your spot now, as space is limited and fills up quickly. Payment is required at time of reservation to guarantee your spot. All major credit cards, PayPal, as well as money orders are accepted. Register right here online. Or contact: workshops@mshopnyc.com or (718) 501-1349 to order, or for more information.

Our new Event Calendar is live! Now we can all be in the know. Take advantage of spreading the word about events you are having or other indie fashion events in your area. Just click on events on the Darling homepage. It is super quick and easy, and you can load up a pretty little image to go with. Anyone in Miami? Don’t miss the KRELwear sunset garden party this Monday night to debut her new Resort Collection, go to the events page to get all the details!

…more feature how to

Between gas prices, AC, and customers preferring to be lying on a beach this is quite possibly a brutal time for retail. Ugh. Unless, of course, you have a boutique right in the center of Beachtown, USA…or you have a Smashing boutique! Customers can still go to the beach, save on gas, and buy from you! We see Summer Sale signs popping up everywhere…you can create your own summer promotion right in your store, here’s how: Login>Click Your Boutique Name> Click Promote > Click Run A Promo. Go check it out and give your customers a special treat!

It’s summertime, are you hanging at the beach, or working hard to take amazing pictures for your Darling store? Maybe you can do both…hey work with us, we’re idealists around here! Grab some friends/models and product, hit the beach for that wonderful light and snap away! Then be a peach and send your store to JulieDarling to critique. It will help you, and all the darling designers, to read a new perspective and get new ideas, then we all feel more comfortable to volunteer too…c’mon take one for the team! ;)
