If it’s hard to generalize about what’s selling, what can sellers of craft bank on? For one thing, the need for a carefully crafted, dynamic online presence – be it a shop, website, Twitter account, or Facebook page. Whether sellers are actually selling online, they need to be marketing online.

Please take some time to watch this video and get to know a new fashion collective on the block. It gives us such joy to see fashion incubators and collectives popping up across the country. Why leave the community you love for New York or L.A., when all the resources you need are right at your fingertips? Detroit Fashion Collective and others (see below) hope you will stay put and create your fashion vision from your home locale. They also intend to help in a big way. These organizations are creating a new model, ultimately one that benefits both the designer where they are — be it Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Chicago — as well as the entire community around it. We are thankful to see this happening, the future is bright darlings, just make sure you are looking –and shopping– in the right places. If you know of a fashion incubator near you, please comment and let us know! Happy Friday, stay smashing, and spread the word.

Fashion Unraveled
Comment and tell us your biggest business mistake to this point, and be entered to win your own copy of her book. Read more…
Darling shoppers and designers! Do you know designers in your community just starting out? Jennifer Lynne Matthews wants to help. She tells us she made every mistake possible, and now she wants to help you to NOT do the same. Read our interview with her, and share with anyone you know who could benefit from her new book: Fashion Unraveled.

Favorite Places
It’s been amazing to watch the support grow for independent fashion designers since we launched Smashing Darling in 2007 (wow!). We have our favorite indie spots we frequent to see what’s going on. What about you? We’d love to hear what your favorite blogs, websites, and/or communities are to surf around, be inspired, and support indie/emerging fashion! Pretty please? Send word via email or comment!

Mending Circle with Sewing Rebellion

get

JANUARY 6, 6:30PM @ Textile Arts Center

New Year, New Life. Get ready to raid your closet and remedy your wardrobe.

We have the perfect thing to help you stick to your resolution to shop less in 2011. Along with Sewing Rebellion NYC and special monthly guests, we present to you a new free monthly workshop: The Mending Circle.

Once upon a time, people knew how to fix their clothing and give them more meaning. Together we can help slow down wasteful textile production and learn + share new skills.

Bring clothes to mend, new and old projects, friends and skills and knowledge to share. We’ll have sewing machines, needles, thread, notions and friendly faces to help you.

The main goal of the Textile Arts Center is to provide support to fiber artists, and everyday people interested in working with fiber, by acting as a resource facility and creative meeting place.

Unique LA, August 14 & 15

Picture 9

UNIQUE LA’s History: Making Consumerism Count
Started in December 2008, UNIQUE LA is now the largest independent design & gift show in the country! We created the event to allow shoppers to discover great local, independent design while taking part in community and supporting the local economy.  The coolest thing about the show is that attendees get the rare chance to meet and shop directly from over 300 hand-selected designers and artists. Our mandate is that 90% of the vendors are local (LA and California), with a sprinkling of amazing American talent from around the country such as Brooklyn, Athens and Portland.

(…SO darling!)

Pool Tradeshow – Vegas, August 17-19

Around the Site

Darlings, we invite you to be indie fashion curators in 2010! We believe we are stronger when we are out there supporting each other. Shoppers spend about 3 minutes a visit surfing the site, over 50% buy on their first visit, spending on average $108. Help that customer along by offering them a curated visit right from your boutique. Be sure to pop an email to your favorite darlings and let them know you favorited them; chances are they will link right back to you. Voila – new friendships abound! (If you have any questions about adding your favorites, email and we are happy to help.)

More ways to share

We have a few new features you are going to want to tell your fans about! Check out your product pages and you will see a new Share this button on each page, as well as a new way for customers to preview your shipping options and prices before they get to the shopping cart. Click here to read the latest newsletter with all the  details. Subscribe yourself to the general Smashing newsletter right here, and maybe let your fans know that too!

Opportunity Knocks

Share your experience. Tell your story. Fashion Unraveled is looking for case studies for their new book. Details here.
A new Fashion Week takes shape in Seattle, designers wanted. Learn more about Emerald City Fashion Week on their website, or follow on Twitter.

Another POOL Trade Show is around the corner in Las Vegas, Feb. 16-18th. Registration details here.
