Nolcha emerging and independent fashion design

As you know, Modarling and I had the pleasure of attending the grand opening of Nolcha’s new retail space they share with Shane & Shawn. It is a great space down on Mulberry St in Nolita, NYC. The designers that Nolcha chose for the black brick space are a nice compliment to the shoes Shane & Shawn design. We met up with emerging designer Bob Bland of Brooklyn Royalty and stylist Seth Friedermann. He has some great tips in his blog for emerging & independent designers, I highly recommend a peek at it. The eve ended with dinner at Cafe Habana and lots of laughs with Bob. She is a wealth of knowledge for indie designers and is always working on great projects. You can keep track of her by reading her blog.

Anyway…I wanted to be the first to give you the skinny on another project Nolcha has up it’s sleeve. They are starting an international emerging fashion directory the details are below with the person to contact.

Emerging and Independent Designers need to have a roof over their heads.  In this age of virtual everything, a virtual roof will do.  To give industry insiders a place to go when looking for “the next big thing” media outlets are able to help both the press and the designer in one fell swoop.

Nolcha.com is growing rapidly as the portal for emerging and independent fashion business information. We want to share this success with you and assist you with brand promotion. You have the opportunity to be selected for a free Fashion Designer profile in our Online A – Z Emerging/Independent Designer Directory.

Nolcha.com has over 58,900 page views, 602,990 hits from 90 countries and 13,250 visitors per month bringing business to the forefront of the emerging and independent fashion market; delivering fashion business advice, expertise and education in retail, manufacturing, money, trends and PR & marketing. In addition industry news, Nolcha opportunities and fashion event coverage is provided. Content is updated daily. www.nolcha.com

Please e-mail odinella@nolcha.com for an application to be featured as well as the template of what information is required by from each designer.

Bob Bland the owner and designer for Brooklyn Royalty is known for the treatments she likes to use with her fabrics. She doesn’t want the status quo fabric when it comes to producing her line. So when she came across a company that produces fabrics that change color with heat, she jumped at the chance introduce them into the clothing line. It was during her Spring 2009 Collection in a loft not far from the tents in Bryant Park that she introduced them to all of us.

Today she is seeing continued success with the new fabrics. She was included in an article in the Detroit News about the company, Body Faders, that produces the fabric. We think this is fantastic that one of the designers in our Smashing Darling community is receiving the press she deserves. All of us know, it isn’t easy! So join me in saying a huge congratulations to Bob for all her efforts. She is keeping her company young, fresh, on the cutting edge, inviting the press to take notice.

I was also happy to read:

Body Faders began four years ago when Karl Clayton and his wife Lori Monley made the jump from glowing necklaces to color-changing fabrics. Since then, the company has grown from a 2,000-square foot space to a 16,000-square-foot facility with nearly 20 employees.

It is so good to read all this during an economic downturn. Hopefully the US will see more small textile and design companies cropping up over the next few years as bigger companies scale back.

What do you believe in?

by trish on November 5, 2008

Today is a new day and regardless of who you wanted to win the presidential race. We, the United States have chosen our 44th president. The belief was, and still is, strong in and for Barack Obama. I think we can all agree that this really has been an amazing race and really stirred up a lot of passion in people. So now what? What else do you believe in? What else are you going to make happen with all the passion you still have all stirred up inside of you? How are you going to achieve the next thing you really believe in.

Here are a few emerging designers that really wear there beliefs right out there and are in it to win it:
Rebecca Turbow/ Safe Clothing
Rebecca Turbow for her belief and conviction in color. She wore turquoise for 8 years and has now switched to gray. This landed her in NY Magazine and just recently in Kanye West’s blog.

NY Mag: Why gray?
Rebecca Turbow: I actually wore turquoise for eight years, but last September, I switched to gray. I’d had a bad year and needed to get out of it.

Yesterday Rebecca was also quoted in Refinery 29’s Pipeline. See good things happen when you believe.
