About the designer:

Oakland California based fiftyseven-thirtythree focuses on designs that are at once simple, graphic, sexy and disconcerting. Loretta Nguyen and James Dawson design and produce screen-printed and stenciled t-shirts and appliquéd hoodies. We draw from an urban aesthetic where multi-culturalism and pop culture merge with inner city decay, graffiti and a lo-tech DIY sensibility. We strive to reflect and celebrate this to some degree in our designs. We derive inspiration from politics, history, media and our sexual identities. We look back at our culture to see what has endured and use it as a road map as to where we’re going. As a culture, we are mixing elements from around the world to create the future. It’s important, as Americans, that we see beyond the regression of our recent past and focus on the fact that the world unfolding around us is incredibly exciting.

Keep up on all that fiftyseven-thirtythree has going on in their blog.

Darling Chevonne Woodard has got it going on. She definitely has a full plate, as all of us indies do. She has not one, but two Darling boutiques: Che Woo Design, and Che+Zie Studio. Che Woo Design, introduced in August 2006, is edgy, eastern, funky and global, designed for today’s fashion leader. Inspired by her love of music, life and graphic illustrations, Che Woo sees her designs worn by A-List Celebrities such as Eve, Lindsay Lohan, Avril Lavigne, Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, Chris Brown and Eva Mendes just to name a few. Chevonne and friends work from their design studio/store in Chicago one block from Harpo Studios, yeah that’s right, Oprah. We are hoping she can get us on the show! Read more about Chevonne below, and if you are in Chicago be sure to check out the great events she has coming down the line.

Darlings: How did you get into fashion?
Chevonne: I have always loved fashion and had come up with a plan to start a clothing line with some family members. That plan fell through and I moved to LA. While living there I meet Fashion Editor Veronica Sims, she made a statement that I would have to say pushed me to move forward with developing Che Woo Design: “Life is too short, so you should always do what is in your heart to do.”

Darlings: Where do you turn for inspiration for your designs?
Chevonne: I am a visual artist by trade so I look to all creative area as inspiration including things I’ve seen in my travel, music, photography, footwear, even furniture gives me ideas for designs, color combinations and textures. In everything I find some form of inspiration for new products.

Darlings: How do you market yourself and your label?
Chevonne: I use several forms of marketing for Che Woo Design. Since we don’t have a PR company helping us, I normally reach out to stylist and photographers for product placement opportunities, sending out pieces for wardrobe. Online Marketing: sending e-mails to our client list, as well as paying e-mail services to blast out info about our line. Event Marketing: we produce several events throughout the year, Out Da Trunk Show and starting April we will start a bi-weekly event called the WE Market, our events are open to indie designers to vend and promote their brands. We take part in street fairs and summer markets throughout the year. Blogging: I blog at http://outdatrunkshow.blogspot.com on new items, recaps on events and on any new Press on the line. Print Advertising: We run ads in local publications, we distribute promo fliers and plan to expand to outdoor ads this summer. Radio Ads: On-air ads are planned for Winter of 2009.

Darlings: What does your average day entail?
Chevonne: Well my day normally consist of making a list of things to do. That list includes website updates, designing new products and reviewing current products for revisions/new color ways for top sellers. Reviewing my company plan to see if we are on point and making revisions to keep us on track and setting a budget for our next big event. My day also includes doing work at Che+Zie Studio located in Chicago West Loop area, the home of Che Woo Design. I also look into organizations, events and media that we would like to work with.

Darlings: What are the pros and cons of designing from your home?
Chevonne: I was working for home, but really needed to expand out of my home, it just became too overwhelming. Now we have a great storefront space named Che+Zie Studio, which is open “by appointment only,” special events and some weekends are open to the public. We have pieces by local artists and designers on consignment. White floor and walls filled with colorful jewelry by Dragon’s Fire Creations, clothing and Zandustry knitted accessories. I love it!!!

Darlings: Do you find your community to be supportive of emerging designers?
Chevonne: There is a ton of things going on in Chicago for new design talent, but I am a believer in creating your own market! So, I have begun to build a wonderful community of supportive emerging indie designers through my events and extending wonderful product placement opportunities to my growing list of fashion industry professionals.

Darlings: Describe your personal style?
Chevonne: My style is simple and causal, I like to say I am the “Denim Queen!” If I am not wearing jeans than I have on a denim blazer or jacket! I love wearing flip-flop or comfy boots, leggings and tunics. I am really not one for long-sleeves and thick sweaters. To dress up I like to wear sundresses and blouses with ruffles or puff-sleeves.

Darlings: How do you see your company in the future?
Chevonne: The future of Che Woo Design is bright!!! I see us producing more one-of-a-kind pieces and releasing 6 new designs each year, adding more accessories to our product line that includes earrings, headbands, bracelets and graphic paper goods, as well as expanding into the world of children’s wear. Our events I plan to grow to 40 vendors as wells taking to additional cities in the next year or so.

Darlings: What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of fashion design?
Chevonne: I don’t consider myself a fashion designer, but an artist that uses different media to express myself creatively. When I am not checking what other designers are doing and watching the trends. I like to read books on history and philosophy. I also love to travel; I am looking into putting together a Midwest road-trip soon. The road is my oasis!!

Darlings: Do you have any events you are getting ready for in the near future?
Chevonne: We take part in a local monthly handmade market, but we have several events Che Woo Design will be hosting in the next few months: an Art Opening/ODTS Anniversary Party in March, our new WE (WeekEnd) Market event concept in April, as well as the next Out Da Trunk Show planned for June. If anyone is interested in taking part they can find information at www.outdatrunkshow.com or www.cheziestudio.com. For questions, contact us at info@chewoodesign.com.

Darlings: Tell us about something you LOVE that you want others to know about.
Chevonne: Wow! Something that I LOVE that I want people to know about, well I would have to say all the projects that I am working and above all Che Woo Design!!! I was working with a non-profit where I taught Fundamentals of Design to Inner-City Youth. I also love to write poetry and introduce people to new ideas!

Darlings: Is there anyone in the Smashing Darling community you have a question or comment for?
Chevonne: This question is for everyone at Smashing Darling. We are always looking for new events and we are willing to travel for a good show, so I would love to know if anyone has a local event that they take part in, that is super fun and totally worth it? I would also like to ask what they look for in an event that they take part in?

Bob Bland is a professional menswear designer with experience at Triple Five Soul, Rugby by Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Banana Republic and Urban Outfitters. Her clothing line, Brooklyn Royalty, combines timeless design principles, premium materials and hand-printed graphics for indispensable garments that are meant to look and wear better over time. Bob is everywhere, we love it! Shop her line right here at Smashing Darling, if you are in NYC swing by 3rd Ward Handmade Holiday Fair and meet her this weekend, go vote for her in ZooZoom’s Fashion Wars…in the meantime, read below and get to know her a little better.

Darlings: How old were you when you started getting involved in fashion design or the fashion world in general?
Bob: My mother taught me how to sew on my grandmother’s old Singer from the time I was 4, but it was only at the age of 12 that I began seriously designing for myself. After creating my first custom outfit, there was no going back.

Darlings: Who is your favorite and/or most influential designer, and why?
Bob: A few years ago I would have said Alexander McQueen every time….his dynamic and innovative creations, along with his flair for dramatic presentation, are right up my alley. However, my industry experience helped me cultivate an appreciation for pragmatism and subtlety in luxury apparel that trumps my passion for theatrics. I’d say that John Varvatos for menswear and Ports 1961 by Tia Cibani for womenswear are my current favorites.

Darlings: So if you had the choice of all designers in the world to work with/for, would that person be your choice?
Bob: Probably not…there are many great designers, but very few create an enjoyable experience for employees. Having worked for and with quite a few designers at this point, the best fit for me by far is Ralph Lauren. Part of the reason I love designing Brooklyn Royalty is the freedom to be creative in my own way…something that rarely happens when working for someone else. But Ralph Lauren respects his designers and offers them stability, control and balance; it would be quite natural for me to work there again. If only he allowed his designers to have their own lines!

Darlings: What influences your work?
Bob: I am constantly being informed and inspired by the world around me…whether its music, fine art, film, nature or just some brief impressions while walking on Grand Street in Williamsburg, the influences are everywhere. Many of my color palettes are derived from paintings or nature scenes, and my overall seasonal themes generally have political overtones. I studied art history and historical costume in college and during my internship at Maggie Norris Couture, and that continues to fascinate me from a more curatorial standpoint.

Darlings: Can you describe your design process?
Bob: Sure! Gather mood images>Determine color story>Sketch individual outfits/pieces in collection>Make paper patterns and drape toiles>Select fabrics and trims>Make samples>Screenprint everything! Its that simple… :)

Darlings: Can you describe your personal style? Does your work reflect that style?
Bob: My personal style is pretty eclectic…I’ve never been able to stick with more than one “look” for longer than a couple days. My womenswear is somewhat similar to my own style, but with a slicker, rock-inspired edge that I adopt for myself sometimes as well. The graphics are definitely always something I connect with, but I’ve never felt the necessity to design clothes just for myself or my friends…there’s some much more out there!

Darlings: Are there any fashion trends that make you cringe?
Bob: Fashion trends themselves make me cringe. After becoming an expert in trends during my time in the industry, I can see a trend coming a year or more away…and that’s just sad. Its true that some style movements are just “in the air”; everyone gets them at the same time, but in the fashion industry at large, trends are imposed onto designers, instead of discovered by them. My favorite eras of NYC fashion were built on individuality, humor and the courage to wear whatever feels good!

Darlings: Is there anything you steer clear of when designing clothing?
Bob: I try not to be overexposed to editorial influences from fashion magazines and blogs, or other designers’ runway shows when designing a collection. I basically become a cultural hermit for a while, to ensure that my influences are pure.

Darlings: How does it feel to see models hit the runway in your work?
Bob: Wow, it is always such a rush! We do a ton of events at Brooklyn Royalty, but the biggest ones of the year are definitely the runway shows. The fusion of clothing, music and the energy of the crowd is awesome. I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of the NYC fashion scene.

Darlings: What future projects are you working on?
Bob: Well, we always do seasonal collaborations for accessories, and my hope is that this year’s Fall 2009 show will feature custom shoes and hats. We will also be pursuing more t-shirt design collaborations, as we transition to new monthly drops for graphic tees, and there are also several events and gallery shows on the horizon that will feature our Obama-inspired designs.

Darlings: What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of fashion design?
Bob: Fashion wasn’t even an interest of mine when I began studying Tae Kwon Do, which is my primary interest outside of fashion, and the physical and mental journey of a lifetime. I also am a student of Shambhala Buddhism, a secular series of teachings that incorporates meditation, study and practical application to end suffering in our lives and the lives of others. Artistically, I love attending gallery shows, creating stained glass jewelry, cooking and taking classes at 3rd Ward.

SMASH UP XV – Track Bike

by Mo on August 7, 2008

On Sale Now!

Are gas prices finally motivating you to commute another way? Especially this time of year while the sun is shining and the snow is not flying. This month’s Student SMASH UP can either remind you to commute another way OR help you suggest it to the world; better yet, buy one for someone who drives their car around the block to the coffee shop, grocery store, post office etc.

This month we stick around the Pacific Northwest with a tee for the guy’s -and maybe the gals?- from Nathan Coyne out in Portland, Oregon. Nathan is a junior at Portland Community College prepping to transfer to PNCA, and this tee is an ode to his track bike – we love it!

I have been printmaking for about 3 years now and I really love it, hopefully I will be able to do it full-time as a career one day. I always like to draw things that I enjoy doing, riding bikes, etc. Since I’ve never gotten my drivers license I end up riding my bike everywhere and that made me want to make a shirt about my fixed gear. I like to create images for areas that I think need more exposure, stuff that I think matters.

Click on any of the pics in this post to open up these images and see how crispy clean Nathan’s print is, and head into the SMASH store to see the barcode on the back. Eco-brown in color, this tee is the earth friendly version of a vintage heather classic from Alternative Apparel, an organic cotton and recycled-poly blend. This tee is also unisex – um, gals you may want to be careful where those bike wheels end up! – we think it looks rockin’ on both of our models above. By the way, a Darling thank you to Barbara and Logan who we stole from work one sunny afternoon in Chester, CT this week! Thanks as well to the talented Whosiepie for these shots.

Thanks again to Nathan, for his super speedy printing, here he is on a recent trip hanging out at Yosemite.

Don’t forget his shirts, and all the student SMASH UP garments, are limited edition and only to be found at Smashing Darling. Check them all out here, an if you know any student printmakers, send them our way! Email mo@smashingdarling.com.
